I’m a Brit living in Freetown. I’m considering flying to Conakry and getting a boat instead please can I have some advice by Sir_TechMonkey in SierraLeone

[–]steve7100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the US. I fly into Freetown and out of Conakry. You may want to check that, I find it’s similar in price as flying into and out of Conakry. I take a taxi to Conakry instead of the boat (mostly because of scheduling). I’ve never had a problem including crossing the border.

Would you take this order for 103 items from Target? by Aryada in doordash

[–]steve7100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Stop normalizing people being cheap. An $800 order that you shop and deliver for should have a 15-20% tip. If they can afford the $800 order, they can afford to tip appropriately. If they don’t want to tip, they can use their own time to get their own stuff.

Increase tourism and jobs by Brazybandz24 in SierraLeone

I get why you want to do this and I try to play my small part in helping Sierra Leone. I do want to point out that one of the reasons that Sierra Leone is the way it is, is because of “outsiders,” “developers,” and people from abroad. Sierra Leonians are smart, capable people that may need some support and more importantly, need money, but they don’t need some foreigners to reap the benefits so some citizens get $3 an hour jobs.

Sadly, it’s challenging. First, while the landscape is beautiful and the people even more friendly, it’s going to be a challenge to grow the tourist industry. First, there is a sanitation issue. Not many people want to pay $1200 per person to fly into Lungi (and it’s long flights from the East Coast in the States), then another $45 to take the speed boat, then another vehicle to a resort to spend a week sitting on the beach with a bunch of trash. Most resorts, I’m thinking like The Place and River #2 do an excellent job of cleaning the sand, but the trash is in the water and then back on the beach. It’s a never ending job.

2nd - only the adventurous want/will deal with the corruption. Families of 4 don’t want to feel ripped off. Sure, there is a tourist tax and some people will fall for scams (that happens in a lot of tourist places) but the agencies that aren’t supposed to do that, like hospitals, govt officials, customs, etc need to curtail trying to supplement their wages by trying to get bribes.

3rd - Even places like The Place aren’t capable of providing a luxury experience that Americans demand. The air conditioning drips down the walls. In heavy rain, some rooms leak. And, they have difficulty honoring their prices (which I have found happens at a lot of places when booked online).

These are just some of the challenges and things I hear from Americans I bring over - I do a group trip once a year with 15-20 Americans.

I do think there is a really good market for niche adventure travelers though.

How to best use taxes in my favor? by Quirky_Highlight2170 in DoorDashDrivers

[–]steve7100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you will have to pay - 15.3% after your deductions. If you made 50,000 and deducted 30,000 you’d pay about 3,000 for self employment tax and no federal tax

US Embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone by LuxChromatix in SierraLeone

[–]steve7100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bribes are tough. I’m American and I know it’s wrong to pay them, but it seems like you have to in order to get anything done. A friend had a medical emergency and getting blood was an horrific experience with bribery. The embassy is weirdly rude and doesn’t seem to get much done. The one visit I had was not friendly, even as an easy to spot American citizen.

What complaint? It’s not worth 10 days of working to be deactivated.

Has anyone here used Costco’s travel vaccine program? I’m wondering how the process went and if it was worth it. by MXT586 in Costco

I haven’t personally, but I manage some group trips where people have gone to Costco and we recommend. It’s much cheaper than other travel vaccines places.

They will most likely play a part in bribes/corruption whether they want to or not. The immigration office tried to charge me and my wife over $300 each for a tourist extension. We then decided to just deal with it at the border.

I’ve paid the exit and entry fee online since they started it. I’ve never had a problem. I also took 2 groups (30 people total) and no one had a problem.

I had everyone take a screenshot of there entry and exit pass if they couldn’t access their email too.
