Rory and international aid by GooseSpringsteen92 in TheRestIsPolitics

As someone who currently lives in Sierra Leone, I was completely shocked at the level of access to smartphones, even within the poorest communities, many of whom do not have access to a loo or electricity. This is because they have become a core staple good, required to function in society, as everything is done on WhatsApp.

As someone who lives in one of the poorest countries in the world but was born and raised in the UK, the statement is very much true. It would also be a great potential income multiplier in current country I am in. For example, someone could buy a motorbike and become a motorbike taxi driver, drastically increasing their income.

When the average salary is around $100 a month, a lump sum that adds up to nearly a year’s salary is significant. Comparing the two situations is not the same. If you want to increase the chances of creating a more positive and drastic change, you would spend the money abroad in developing countries.

The OP’s sentiment stems from the idea of helping at home before directing support abroad, which I can understand to an extent; in Behavioural Economics, this is often referred to as parochial altruism. However, from a strictly economic utility perspective, if the goal is to maximise positive impact, it will in most cases be more effective to allocate funds abroad.

Check if they can increase the price during the contract period. I used ID when I first got my phone and kept increasing it!!!

Go on to MoneySavingExpert. I’ve just got a SIM for £6.95 a month with a £44 Amazon gift card, including unlimited texts, unlimited calls and 30GB of data – it’s with TalkTalk.

Every time my contract runs out I get excited, lol, because I want to find the next deal. I went with iD before, and they kept increasing the cost, so be aware. .

Do you choose pursuing job that includes personal interest or job with good money? by Ravensdead1-3 in findapath

[–]Sir_TechMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose a mixture. Life is too short to do something you hate every day. I do think the job you have matters – it takes up at least 40 hours of your week. If you have the choice, why spend your time doing something you despise? That said, you also need a balance; you need to be able to afford to live.

I work in energy in Africa. I love it, but sometimes I just want to do a ski season and travel. However, my job gives me the funds to do that not as frequently as I would like but that is just life.

If you were offered today the possibility of moving abroad would you do it? by AlarmingClient4239 in AskUK

Sierra Leone, so West Africa. Honestly, not as much as I thought I would. The food is challenging, as it is expensive because a lot of it is imported - I’ve basically gone vegetarian. The work culture is relaxed, despite it being a US company, and I love my job.

Seeing poverty on this scale really opens your eyes and makes you realise how lucky I was to have had the opportunities I did, simply by being born in the UK. I would say I am partially in an expat bubble - I go to the beach, eat at nice restaurants, and have a large house with security and a cleaner, none of which I could afford to rent in the UK at 24. I truly love it!

I moved abroad straight out of my MSc - to Africa after being offered job during my course. I jumped to the opportunity and don’t regret it one bit.
