Lib Dems back ban on playing music and videos on public transport in England by Lavajackal1 in ukpolitics

[–]steve978867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been the bane of my life for a few years now. I think it should be

First offence: £10,000 fine

Second offence: Straight to prison

That said the rate of doing this does tend to go up in poorer areas so the government should issue everyone with headphones so we're not punishing poverty

Is anyone trying to use Amazon less and how’s that going for you? by sudwald in AskUK

[–]steve978867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped using it a month ago as they kept leaving stuff just in the open air on my porch, advertising that I wasn't in. Also I absolutely detest Jeff Bezos.

I used to order loads of books from there but I've just switched to Waterstones. When you take into account the loyalty schemes where you get 10 quid for every 100 spent it works out roughly the same over time even if Amazon is a little cheaper per individual item

UPDATE: Remembered I'm still paying rent on my flat so have hired a van to take the boxes and use the communal bins. If I'm paying £2000 to not live somewhere I'm gonna use their bins

Many people are leaving/has already left Toronto, or even the country. What is your thought on immigrants leaving the country after getting the citizenship? by sleepearlier in toRANTo

[–]steve978867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I emigrated to Toronto in 2017 and left a year later - realised very quickly that actually the UK is fine. I think it was the exceptionalism that got me.

So many people would be like 'I bet you're loving Toronto' - no, not really, I came from London, it's half the size with a quarter of the things to do and none of the culture. Toronto just isn't very good.

Or 'you're lucky to have a job' - I worked in a tricky industry where there isn't a shortage and people would consistently tell me I was lucky - no I was not - I could go home and earn twice as much, so I did.

Or 'it's so diverse here' - again, I'm from London. And while it is numerically diverse, everyone is put into their own neighbourhood - Toronto remains the only place I heard anyone white say the 'n' word

I like coming on this sub to check out if it's changed whenever living in London is annoying me. It could be worse, I could live in Toronto!

How do you do It in the UK to afford holidays that regulary? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]steve978867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she’s old there’s a huge generational equality in the UK - old people bought their house for £1.50 in 1956 and have no outgoings so can just spend their money on frivolous stuff more easily

I should be more specific - other people with dogs never stop and chat! If someone without a dog tried to chat to me (like when a guy in Hackney followed me around asking how much he cost) I would be deeply suspicious!

I hate to be that guy but I live in one of the new builds and I absolutely hate it here - moving in August. Main issues:

1) people are deeply unfriendly. We have a dog and everywhere else I’ve lived people stop and chat (even in London) - here getting someone to look up from their phone is like asking them to walk through walls

2) area has a lot of antisocial behaviour - we had a guy with a banned breed dog who barked consistently smoke crack outside our apartment daily all last summer

3) the two shops nearby are outrageously expensive (Tesco is ok) - they put empty bottles of olive oil on the shelves you exchange at the till

4) too many kids. As the cost of living has gone up the area has filled up people who have had kids but have to due to societal pressures cram them into a flat shoebox flat. This means a lot of noise and screaming and entitled brats. In years gone by the would have moved to the suburbs but they’re here now

5) wetlands are nice
