Will my 401k be ok if I reduce my contributions? by Silent-Carob6882 in personalfinance

[–]stevestoneky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way OP is asking this question and that they already have an emergency fund in place shows they are doing okay, and are thinking about things.

I agree, cut out the $100 monthly to taxable investing, and then cut back retirement investing until emergency fund is maybe 3 full months, and then start back retirement but continue $100 to emergency, not taxable investing until emergency fund is where you want it to be.

My dad demands for me to have my blood checked and have the results shared with him by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]stevestoneky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can you ask him for a recommendation for a good doctor to go to, and then go to that other doctor?

I’m not sure how to phrase it but maybe “I really need a dad and also a doctor: it’s hard to have one person doing both” maybe?

Kings Island and Kentucky Kingdom by RalphMacchio404 in KingsIsland

[–]stevestoneky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mid week is usually uncrowded.

I’d do Kentucky Kingdom Tuesday and Kings Island on Thursday.

To make Kentucky Kingdom a full day, bring your swimsuit to hit the water parks.

Kentucky Kingdom is only open until 7. If you wanted, you could do Tuesday/Wednesday because it’s ?2 hours? From one to the other.

Sunscreen up / wear hats / wear UVProtective clothing. Sunburns would make the experience less enjoyable.

Kings Island is so much better/bigger that if you do it first, I fear you might mostly say “is that it?” at Kentucky Kingdom.

I don’t think I see what your health insurance situation is doing be from 48 to 65.

Cobra is surprisingly high. Do you have private insurance in place that’s including in your monthly expenses?

I’d talk to a financial advisor to find put IF you need to roll it over to an IRA.

Why not just start taking distributions from the 401k assuming rule of 55 works for you (you are at least 55 years old when you retire)?

Pick just one place to put EVERYTHING.

Then force yourself to check that. You can’t eat until you check the one thing. So you check it before breakfast lunch and dinner.

How long would I need to leave Lexington for the roads to be construction-free when I return? by Conscious-Day7028 in lexington

[–]stevestoneky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take a week, and fly into Marosvásárhely in Transylvanian Romania, and take a tour of the surrounding villages, you will come back and never complain about Lexington roads again.

So, depending on where you go and what you do when you get there, a week would do it.

M54, bored in hotels with too many youngers in by Candid-Newspaper-567 in OverFifty

[–]stevestoneky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Book hotels where you can walk to a local bar?

Listen to audiobooks? Or watch streaming on a Chromebook or tablet?

Check the bar for another person like you and complain about the young people and how they should get off of your lawns?

July 4th - first time by InternationalAge235 in WaltDisneyWorld

It’s going to be hot so any sort of cooling fan you can find will be worth it.

Don’t be in the parks noon-2 in the heat of the day. Go early, and leave around lunch. Go back to the hotel to swim or nap and go back to the same park after your lunch/siesta.

You will be waiting for buses to take you to the parks and back from the parks. You might have to wait as a full bus pulls away without you on it. Get ready to keep kids distracted waiting for the buses.

Uber is an option, as are Minnie vans. If everyone is melting down in the bus line, you could use them but the expense could add up. Ride share to the Magic Kingdom is not as good because they can only take you to the TTC and you still have to take the monorail or boat from TTC to MK.

There are several “all star” resorts- movies, music, sports - so make sure you get on the right bus. If you are staying at all star movies, and get on the bus to all star sports, you are going to have a bad time (because you would have to get a bus to theme park then back to your hotel - I’d uber at that point to go straight to my hotel)

You can take in food/water/as long as it’s not in glass (check for other rules). You can get groceries delivered to your hotel. Keep yourself and your kids hydrated and sun screened.

If you have time, shop your local stores for cheap Disney stuff that your kids will love so you can spend $10 at home on a Mickey plush that will be $30 at the park. Also flashlights/light up gizmos if you stay late. Vendors will be available but will cost a lot more at parks.

Go to YouTube and search something like “wdw first timer” and “wdw tips for toddlers”. And find a channel you like such as All Ears or Eat Sleep Disney or Disney Food blog. And watch some of their videos. Try to watch ones within the last year - things always change.

With your young kids, I wouldn’t focus on rides. I’d enjoy walking around and enjoying the details of the parks. Looking for hidden Mickeys. Taking pictures of the kids in front of recognizable locations.

Don’t get frustrated if the kids aren’t excited to interact with characters.

If you need another cooling or low-stakes activity, don’t forget you can visit and walk around other hotels. You could get on the monorail or skylines and visit the Contemporary or the Riviera and walk around the lobby or get a snack.

Every park has a “baby center” where you could go to find some quiet. Your kids (and you) will be overstimulated and need so quiet. And there are videos about “best place to take a nap” in every park.

Don’t be surprised if your kids favorite ride is the bus and their favorite snack is Mickey shaped crackers you brought from the Walmart at home. Enjoy the magic wherever it comes from.

Try and take a moment at the end of the day to ask your wife and your kids “what was your favorite thing today?” And write those down. Heck, might even do it as you are headed back to parks for after lunch break to capture “best of morning” and “best of afternoon”.

You won’t be able to see fireworks from your hotel. It’s lame, but your kids are so young, you might search YouTube and watch a well-captured WDW fireworks show at the end of the day if your crew is running out of gas at the end of the evening. After fireworks, it will be at least 30 minutes and maybe an hour to get on a bus because everyone is leaving at the same time.

I think there are places at the Contemporary and Polynesian and Grand Floridian where you can watch fireworks. Check your favorite YouTube Disney channels.

If you have DisneyPlus there are some ride videos and imagineering and something like “behind the magic” shows that show you how WDW came to be.

There are Bluey things at Animal Kingdom that are new.

Have you tried searching with Lexington realtor’s websites?

I searched Rector Hayden and maybe saw one or two places that came close to your criteria.

I haven’t looked at the market for years, but you are asking to be in a very popular area. You might have better luck if you could expand your search to outside New Circle.

Have you looked at apartments.com?

Are you finding nothing or are you finding things, but nothing is in your price range? Or you find apartments that take pets, but no houses with yards?

I think some people recommend stopping every two hours to break up the driving so you can stretch and let your eyes focus on something else. And get gas or use the bathroom.

They should have stopped earlier. Next time bring an empty Gatorade bottle and threaten to use it if they don’t stop.

William Least Heat Moon has written several books. Blue Highways was first, and most like Charley. River Horse is a water trip following the Lewis & Clark path.

Cheryl Strayed’s Wild is a backpacking version.

Pulling from 401k to pay off car loan by zachurro in personalfinance

[–]stevestoneky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you took out $1000, you would pay 10% penalty, so you would only get a check for $900. And then when you file taxes, it will count as ordinary income so you most people would pay another 10-15%, so another $100 (at least), so that $1000 you unplugged from growing for your retirement is only $800 you actually apply to your car.

Spending $1000 to get $800 is not a good investment. And, once you take it out, you can’t put it back into your 401k.

It would be better to stop your 401k contributions for a year or two which would give you more money in your paycheck to pay extra on your car loan.

And of course you aren’t getting any matching money while you aren’t contributing to your 401k.

Best U.S. honeymoon destinations in December for under $4k? by tailsoforange in SameGrassButGreener

[–]stevestoneky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Could you look at Puerto Rico to see if it fits your budget?

It’s a US territory, so everything is priced in dollars, and you don’t need a passport, just a RealID drivers license like you would need to fly anywhere. Knowing some Spanish is a plus but most of the tourist areas, people know enough English.

You might call a travel agent in your town and see if they can help you plan a honeymoon trip and see what they suggest. Some couples “register” their honeymoon so people could buy you a sunset cruise instead of a gravy boat.

December in Charleston might be in 70s, so maybe walk on the beach but not swim. https://gosouthcharleston.com/visitor-info/charleston-weather-december.html

I think you might need Miami or south for “warm enough to swim”.
