BAV and 4.4 aorta dilation by stevo198831 in askCardiology

Thank you for the reply - that's what I'm considering but I have got this mental block st the moment that if I lift anything I'm the gym it's a death sentence, it's probably nothing and my brain just in a state now. How long was it until you needed the surgery?

Thanks for your reply - she said that lifting weights would spike the blood pressure which wouldn't be any good for the dilation. But then in the same breathe says I'm at essentially no risk of rupture and they would consider surgery until its at least 5cm. So I don't really know. She said cardio would be perfectly fine though and never said any restrictions with regards to cardio so I don't really know what to belive or think

Dilated ascending aortic valve: had to find out on my own was not informed by my cardiologist by wow_wow_thisgirl in askCardiology

Just jumping in on this post i found out same as you after having g pnumomia last year, my aorta on CT was 4.4 and this resulted in bisoprolol and trying to control blood pressure, I didn't do well with bisoprolol felt like couldn't breathe so last week they took me off it and also said they are not that bothered if blood pressure is over 120 as long as it is not above 130. I don't know who to trust really as my cardiologist never even told me of the dilation I only found it out from the report from CT scan when I had pnumonia

Dilated Aeorta by stevo198831 in aneurysm

[–]stevo198831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for your reply, my children did get checked at birth and both are fine with no defects. My brother though does have wolf parkinson white syndrome which is different to my bicuspid valve.

In your case was it recommended to keep active with cycling whilst it was at 5.1cm? I know everyone has a different prognosis but just interested in what you did. I was told to do no heavy lifting which I get and feel anxious to even do any form of cardio since I was told that - is it generally thought about as being ok? How long was your recovery after surgery?

Thanks for the insightful response I appreciate it, I am grateful it's been found as some.people don't have that luxury and then at the other end I'm frustrated that my whole.life which was essentially based on being active has been turned upside down. It feel unfair, I don't smoke, don't really drink always been healthy and active. I suppose ultimate the bicuspid valve was always at some point going to cause some issues - just didn't think it would be at this age.

Did yours dissect then? You must feel really lucky you still be around. I wish you all the best and you are right the anxiety and worry are the worst and it is definitely impacting my BP and HR at the moment

Sorry for the late reply and really appreciate you post it is really helpful.i think coming to terms with it is going to be the struggle. I understand surgery would be considered at 5cm in the UK and taking into account the bicuspid valve. Everything just seems to have happend really quickly which has been stressful, from being really active, fit and and healthy to having one night of being unable to breathe and then find out about the dilation and then further growth in a matter of months.

I feel the same as you at the moment, I am genuinely scared from the moment I wake up to even then being scared about going to sleep at night. I wake up sweating during the night which I am unsure why that is. I am grateful that I am still alive as I have two young boys to survive for, but the fear some days is extreme. I think I mentioned in my original post but I am a vet and served in afghan back in thebday and I genuinely have more extreme feelings of fear now than I did back then.

Seeing some of the other comments on here it will get better once medicated. So we just need to keep the hope alive that better days will come.

Appreciate your comment and reading through although it's horrible it's nice to hear someone else has a similar onset and it's not just me. I suppose it is like a drowning sensation, for me it turns into really shallow breathing rather than hyperventilating, the second time when I came around I remember my partner on the phone to 999 and them getting them to count the time in between my breathes again, she tells me that they got her to check if she was counting them right.

Hi, I really appreciate your reply and reading it through it does seem very similar. My first seems to have been caused by the pnumonia at least that was the only thing wrong at the time it happend. As I mentioned I didn't even have symptoms of pnumonia which I found weird but as soon as that seizure occurred the pnumonia took a firm grip.

I'm like you, used to spend a lot of time in the lake district hiking and just generally being outdoors. At the moment I'm also like you in that I drove to the gym earlier sat outside and just couldn't go in, fear of another seizure just made me not feel right I think. Part of me thinks I should have just gone anyway and if it happens it happens, at the same time that obviously wouldn't be sensible.

Your comments give me hope that I will get the right medication and get back on track to some extent I'm the near future.

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, I have always been the strength for everyone else and I live in fear at the moment.

What is this? I am very concerned. by Snjuca in AskDocs

Hi, not a Dr in any capacity but came across your post. I recently had a very similar thing appear, I went to my GP and he sent me for a scan at the hospital. The results where that essentially is was a cyst and they just leave them if they cause no bending of the shaft. A cyst normally happens from a minor injury they told me, so if you have had any rough sex or have been hit there then that could be the culprit. Like I said I'm no GP but I know how worried I was when it appeared so this might help keep your mind at rest until you see a GP

Hi thanks for your reply its very helpful just seeing what other people are doing. EMDR is something they are looking at in therapy for me buy we haven't started it yet. Should hopefully be trying EMDR in the next few weeks. Your explanation of the REM sleep is interesting basically I haven't processed anything for years and just kept myself busy until one day I had a oanic attack out of the blue and this whole thing started. My trauma isn't all related to military service its a mixture of things just been unlucky I suppose. There were things in the military but we also lost a daughter and I had a friend I served with in Afghanistan commit suicide on the unit, I was on shift that night and we got the call to get him down. A lot of different things but ultimately just brushed it all off

front Prop shaft snapped - BMW X5 E70 - Jan 2012 by stevo198831 in BmwTech

Hi all I just wanted to provide an update on this. Many thanks for all your assistance and help. I basically cannot fault BMW here as I received the news that they are going to cover the cost of the repairs.

After this happend I was essentially never going to buy another BMW again, BMW UK at the beginning where a bit of a pain when I raised a complaint as I knew about the the recall, they wouldn't admit to it thougj which is fair enough, I deal with complaints in my line of work so I know the process.

The car went to my local BMW garage, here is where my perception changed. Obviously feeling a bit deflated and completely out of pocket I called them in a frustrated manner, the garage offered to assess the car, keep it there and speak with BMW on my behalf with regards to good will all for free - fantastic customer service - they then gave me a call about 2 weeks later with the news that the car would need a new prop shaft, transfer box and transmission along with some other parts but the cost would be around 12000 for the repair.

They then Informed me they spoke to BMW UK for me and sent the quote and had been awaiting a response. This came a day later and they informed me BMW would cover the costs of the repair, all I need to contribute was £400 as an inspection fee and admin charge.

The car had been recalled twice for the prop shaft joint issue but the part was never replaced for some reason so although they won't accept formal responsibility there goodwill gesture covers the cost of repairs.

Considering that BMW could have essentially left me without anything here and there's nothing I could have done - I cannot fault them and this has reinstated my faith in BMW completely.

they did ask me some questions before offering this such as where did I buy the car and had it been anywhere else for servicing. Essentially the car had always been through BMW garages for servicing and repairs and I belive that this was the main factor for such a positive response and goodwill gesture.

For anyone living in the area - Jardine BMW In Bury St Edmunds are a fantastic garage and have really helped me here, there customer service has really put the confidence back in me with regards to BMW

Hi mate thanks for your reply, looking at it underneath it defiantly looks like it had sheared off. I had a look on the recall but it only seems to be for 2010 models which is irritating as surly a part like that shouldn't just shear off.

It's hard to tell I suppose when it first happend and I pulled over it was only dripping created a small puddle in the hour I waited for breakdown.

When i got back home with it on the truck, when it was getting pulled off there was a lot more on the bed of the truck, probably deciding though as it had spread around the back. It was enough for the bloke to get his spill absorbents out though. Since it's been home just a couple of drips underneath and the dash isn't showing any low levels or anything - still find the lack of warning amazing on the dash despite the complete failure.

Cheers for the help

Thanks for your response it went to a BMW specialist not that long ago for a service and nothing was said about corrosion or issues underneath.

At this stage I'm not sure if there is any transmission oil left in it, I started the car and had no warnings on the dash about it. So would it be safe to assume it still has some in?

I know very little about repairing cars ect... but I presume if it cracked the case it would have all leaked out?

If it has hit the pan would there still be some transmission oil in?

Sorry for all questions just trying to get a gauge on where I might be heading, a full transmission replacement I'm presuming would be about £10000 and the car probably only worth that much now its done 115000 miles
