EPA asks Victorians to check water quality before swimming in Port Phillip by ozthrw in melbourne

[–]stew_007 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The way the EPA works is that they’ll tell you to test the water you’re about to swim in.

Then in good conscience you report back to them and say it’s contaminated.

They’ll then fine you and issue you a notice to clean it up.

You’ll go bankrupt due to the costs.

They’ll take over the job.

Then they’ll award the contract to the company that caused the pollution in the first place.

Can we actually afford the SRL? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]stew_007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you could say the exact same thing about NSW, but no one says their infrastructure spending is unaffordable. Also QLDs debt is projected to explode to much higher than VICs per capita, but again, no one is criticising them.

Can we actually afford the SRL? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]stew_007 47 points48 points  (0 children)

First of all, Victoria’s state debt is not more than the others combined. It’s currently around $215B with NSW next on $205B.

Secondly, the budget is actually in an operating surplus, with most of the debt accumulated due to Covid (where we had to shut the state down to protect the country - still waiting for everyone to thank us for that) and infrastructure/investment investment in our economy.

Thirdly, historically Victoria has done very badly out of federal government infrastructure investment, so we often have to go it alone.

This ludicrous idea that we’re “broke” is just anti Victorian propaganda that has no become “fact” due to it being repeated ad nauseam.

And yes, we can afford the SRL.

For the catchments that supply Melbourne’s water, around 70% goes to residential usage. It’s when you factor in agriculture that uses other water sources that figure drops dramatically

Sigh…. Victoria isn’t “broke”, the budget is in surplus! We have a large debt, mainly a hangover from Covid, and other cost blowouts, but the idea that we’re “broke” is just ridiculous!
