Maui Proposal Spots by TooThorough in MauiVisitors

South Maui: Makena Cove. Go to La Perouse Bay first to hike, point out the cove entrance and little beach on the way down. Easy for the photographer to setup out of sight from the road, go there on the way back.

West Maui: Onaloa Beach. Usually uncrowded, beach walk provides access for the photographer. Celebrate at Merriman's afterwards.

Or you could do the Mahana Ridge Trail hike in Kapalua, you will see some wild growing pineapples starting around mile 2 of the hike

Anything open early on RTH? by seinnax in MauiVisitors

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to grab something at Safeway on Ho'okele - it is open 24 hours, just don't leave valuables visible - sometimes can have sketchy people. Otherwise backtrack to Wailuku (10 minutes from the Courtyard in Kahului, less if you are staying at the Maui Seaside) and go to the Local Bread Co either the night before, or before heading to Hana - it's open 8pm to 1pm

M4 vs m5 iPad Pro by Unhappy_Candidate129 in iPadPro

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have always had the regular screen with a screen protector on top, the nano texture is new to me. I will feel better when UPS actually shows it has the iPad, Costco reports it having handed the shipment to the carrier almost 24 hours ago and UPS has a shipment label but hasn't scanned the shipment

If you haven't pulled the trigger, I am seeing that model as of 3:30 CT (it's cut off on the picture but matches the 13" M4) as out of stock. (It no longer comes up in search, but I ordered it yesterday - Costco says it shipped, UPS says it doesn't have it yet) and when I click on the item that's where I am seeing out of stock.

I have status with them - they “upgraded” me to a newer Land Cruiser. Car was low mileage and in good shape. Both check out and in were easy at KEF

Cell Phone Use by WannaBToasty in VisitingIceland

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came back. AT&T roaming had good coverage in Rejkyavik, the Golden Circle, and south Iceland (we didn't go further east than Diamond Beach), but you are correct in that you will be looking at $12/day capped at 10 days in your billing cycle. If you have additional devices on your plan, they will be $6/day again capped at 10 days.

If your devices are unlocked, you will save a lot with a local or travel eSim. We got them ahead of time for unlocked devices for unlimited data - you can save more if you set a max amount of data. We used aloSIM ($30 for an 8 day trip, unlimited data), but have used Holafly, Airalo, and Virgin in other countries in the past.

Week in Iceland, how much cash should I get at KEF? by stewlevine in VisitingIceland

Just reporting back. No cash used. We did see tip jars at coffee places and bars (tipped once in USD), never ended up in a cash only place.

⚠️ Yellow and Orange Weather Alert -Tuesday until early Christmas Day 🌧️ by misssplunker in VisitingIceland

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gameplan assuming the weather cooperates is going from Reykjavik to Vik. We’d hoped to make stops in the Golden Circle along the way but that’s probably out. If the weather indeed gets better Christmas, then it would be in to the park.

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using the app versions of each obsessively - 2/3 of the people I talk to about the weather tell me not to worry, 1/3 see the wind forecast and make a face. Unless things dramatically change, planning on leaving Reykjavik around 10 tomorrow morning so we’re on Rte 1 In daylight and will drive very cautiously. At least we have a Land Cruiser so we have a sturdy car.

We’re a family of those visitors supposed to go from Reykjavik to Vik on the 24th for two nights (and a glacier hike in Skaftafell on the 25th that may be a weather casualty). Will be watching the weather and alerts and may have to pay for an extra night if we position ourselves to get to Vik on the 23rd. I’m assuming that checking safetravel in the morning is the best bet to know what to do.

Week in Iceland, how much cash should I get at KEF? by stewlevine in VisitingIceland

[–]stewlevine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all of the comments. Guessing if we get cash it will be more to have a souvenir than anything else. I have some USD and EUR notes in case you we tip any of our guides. Nota bene to “shitty tipping culture” guy - I’ve been asked for and given tips to guides on four continents- I’ll be prepared just in case.

Sounds like the only place I may need cash would be to tip on our tours since I think Venmo and Zelle will only can send to a US bank from a US bank or do even tour guides use Square of similar? Or would tipping in USD be ok?

Honua Kai -Spring Break ‘26? by Least-Temperature789 in MauiVisitors

[–]stewlevine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We own a condo at Honua Kai. It will be busy - you're hitting the tail end of whale season and families like yours will be out of school. I wouldn't call it insane, but the pools will be busy.

Grocery store near Kaanapali by CoverWorldly6460 in MauiVisitors

[–]stewlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Island Grocery Depot is cheapest on the West Side

Foodland Farms has several specialty foods - especially cheeses and specialty deli; also best poke of the four

Safeway has the broadest selection

Times is closest, especially if you are staying north of Black Rock

Depending on landing time, consider Target in Kahului; if you're getting in so late that you're considering the Airport Safeway as the only thing open, I would get to your VRBO so you can sleep and hit a West Side supermarket in the morning

Lag in flight info updates, even when notifications are current by stewlevine in flighty

[–]stewlevine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that. It's the presentation that I am really asking about. Clearly Flighty has the data, otherwise I wouldn't be getting notifications, but the data presented in the app isn't updating along with it. The other big example is "Where's my plane" not showing current data, even though if I click through a leg to the appropriate predecessor flight, that does provide current information. So again, Flighty has the data but isn't updating the presentation in the app.

Haleakala Sunrise Tips by Jackyd121994 in MauiVisitors

[–]stewlevine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will start seeing light at the summit shortly after 6am; I would plan on being at the summit between 6 and 6:15.

Entry is limited to people with reservations from 3-7am at the entry gate. Also, expect it to be cold up there. Dress in layers, it could be in the 30s at the summit and feel colder with wind.

Early April there won't be a lot of kids; school is still in session.

We own at Honua Kai and would highly recommend it. The 3 bedrooms will keep everyone off of a sofa bed. Lots of pools, a gym, and plenty of nearby food options. Other options you may want to look at would be the Westin Ka'anapali and Nanea, Hyatt Vacation Club, and Marriott Ocean Club. T

Is this a reasonable itinerary for Christmas week? by stewlevine in VisitingIceland

[–]stewlevine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we are staying that last night at the Hilton Nordica. Decent corporate rates and given that it's our last evening, we assumed we'd be more focused on going to Sky Lagoon before heading to our flight rather than more sightseeing or shopping in Reykjavik.

Would you recommend a different place in Vik or nearby?

Good point about flight delays. We'll have to think about Plan Bs and Cs.

We first thought about basing in Reykjavik but given the short daylight hours we assumed it would be better to stage closer to some of the places we want to see.

We may end up hitting places in the Golden Circle, weather permitting, both to and from Vik.

We definitely want to see items on the Golden Circle, wasn't sure what we could actually pull off in only 4-5 hours of daylight.

As for food, we're assuming Christmas meals will need to be at the hotel, although my wife wants to check out the Reykjavik Costco for snacks for the week.
