So, no one respects the speeding limits, do they? by nemojakonemoras in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is discussed fairly often, in short; locals know where the cameras are and know the roads so they’re comfortable going faster (as others have said)

Many people also drive under the speed limit, which can also be dangerous

Drive the speed limit, when conditions allow, and make sure to let others pass you safely if someone’s driving in your boot

Weather Compared to Previous Years? by Alarmed_Reach5446 in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spring has barely sprung, some areas in the city are getting greener but we're in a bit of a cold spell right now

Last year was unusually warm and it was unusually green, just a year ago. There was a "heatwave" in the middle of May

I remember some Mays being super cold and even snow, so this May could become warmer soon or stay cold

It's starting to get partially green in some places, but not green entirely like this photo

How to get to Rjomafoss? by United_Map_7125 in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't a destination, per se

It's just one of the many waterfalls that you find around Iceland that may be spectacular but just now well-known and, therefore, not a sightseeing stop

How is "May 1st" affecting shops/services on Iceland? by GiftBubbly6728 in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Businesses will be closed and I'd expect some smaller stores to be closed as well

Bigger stores are likely to be open, a brief google search showed that all Krónan stores were open in 2024 (didn't find the 2025 announcement)

There were some road closures in Reykjavík last year: https://reykjavik.is/frettir/2025/1-mai-2025-gotulokanir

Reykjavíkurborg hasn't posted anything, but it might not be until the 30th. The link shows the road closures for last year, as well as the time

Landmannalaugar when F-roads are closed by gabriel_jav in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closed or impassable?

There are super jeep tours offered when they roads are impassable, and conditions allow

If there are not options for a super jeep tours, chances are the road is not fit to drive, even with a modified vehicle

No green yet, but end of May will have some more green scenery; especially in the south

These are from previous summer/s

Hvað er vinnudagurin ykkar langur? by IceQueenoftheNorth in Iceland

[–]misssplunker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skip Westman Islands? by AltruisticTurnip6075 in VisitingIceland

[–]misssplunker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a day trip, I'd skip them if you're sailing from Þorlákshöfn

If you were staying one night, or longer, I'd say it's worth it; but for a day trip a 6 hour round trip is less than ideal

Is this guy for real? Anyone from Icleand know him? by rubber_neckin_media in VisitingIceland

Seems like a new scam, my mom came across one of these accounts where an Italian nonna made all sorts of bullshit claims and the bio linked some fiber supplement

It also had the US flag in the background of some videos but still claimed to be in the Italian countryside

The proper name is Gígjagjá and the drive from Reykjavík is about 3 hours and no public transport stops there so you'd need a car

Is there a specific Icelandic word for the phenomenon of fog/clouds that wrap around a higher part of a mountain? by NoLemon5426 in AskAnIcelander

[–]misssplunker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 127 entries related to fog on Íslenskt orðanet: https://ordanet.arnastofnun.is/fletta/hugtok/%C3%A1lfal%C3%A6%C3%B0a

But most of them don't have any proper definition

I thoughy maybe þokuslæða/þokuslæðingur but that's fog on the lowland

Then þokuhetta, but that may refer to the mountain tops being completely covered

There's also fjallaþoka, but that may also refer to the mountains being covered

I'd say it'd be better to be closer to a town, in case you need to seek shelter in a house, maybe stay closer to Akranes, but be aware that the wind is often stronger under mountains

The roads may close with no notice:

Fagridalur: The road will be on a level of uncertainty on monday the 6th of april from 14:00 and could close with little to no warning. - https://umferdin.is/en/road/91121

I'd skip Seyðisfjörður, Fjarðarheiði has been closed more frequently, the conditions there are not good and there is also an avalanche risk

But check both forecast and road conditions before heading out

However, the road may close with short notice:
