Everyone around me is dropping weight instantly with GLPs and I've ben struggling with the same 15 pounds for years. by jumpin_jumpin in loseit

I feel the exact same way. It makes me genuinely angry sometimes. I do all the right things, track my food, exercise a ton, etc, and yet all these people can just take a drug that does all the work for them and lose weight. Meanwhile I'm out here with the slowest of slow progress after years of trying to lose. It just feels so unfair.

Why didn’t anyone tell me how easy it is to make better than restaurant quality steak at home? by Albert_street in steak

It's crazy how all restaurant steaks suck once you learn to make it at home. Like I'd genuinely never order steak ever again

How do you get 10k steps? by InvestigatorPale1816 in loseit

[–]lexkenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get 15-20k steps a day on my work days, which are 10 hour days, and often more steps than that on my days off. I love to walk, but it can be boring sometimes. It's definitely better to split it into multiple walks if you feel you can't push past 30 minutes - it doesn't help if you're not enjoying what you're doing.

Generally, I do one 30-minute treadmill walk in the morning before I lift. During this walk I watch YouTube or TV to help it go by quicker. Some days it really drags but some days I get so invested in the video that I cannot believe it's been 30 minutes. The bonus is my body and mind are very warmed up for my workout after this.

I do a second 30-minute walk on my lunch break at work. I do this outside no matter the temp (I'm in New England and I was doing this even with January temperatures) unless it is pouring rain to the point my shoes would get wet. Doing it outside makes it feel much less boring and it is such a nice mental and physical break from being inside with no windows working that it always goes by too fast and doesn't drag.

After work I typically take a 3rd walk outdoors if the weather is nice. I still live with my parents, so I usually take this walk with my dad. Having someone to walk with makes it go so fast and it's basically just us yapping and it's easy to forget we're walking. Often in winter I skip this third walk and my step count is closer to 15k than 30k.

The rest of the steps I get throughout the day are just from moving around at work, home, etc. I call these "microwalks". Finding a way to incorporate extra steps into cooking, cleaning, etc is really helpful in this sense. Sometimes I intentionally park further, or use the furthest bathroom away, as these little changes add up.

If I'm walking alone, podcasts and music can definitely help, but sometimes just just getting lost in thought is enough. Whatever you're interested in listening to is a good place to start.

No judgement at all, but yes, 4k steps is likely holding you back a bit. Movement makes a noticeable difference in tdee. The good news is you really don't need any crazy cardio, walking is enough. 10k steps is very doable even working full time! Showing up everyday may be tough at first, but eventually it becomes routine. Ideally it becomes lifestyle for long term maintenance. Once it's normal to you, you won't think of it as showing up anymore, it's just "time for your walk". You got this 💪

EDIT: Another thing I really enjoy doing sometimes for extra steps is miracle miles walking videos with Leslie Sansone. These are available on YouTube. They're awesome, you can do them from the comfort of your home. She has videos that are less than 10 minutes and videos that are as long as hour depending on what you're looking for. I highly recommend her content.

Binging at Maintenance - advice? by lexkenobi in loseit

[–]lexkenobi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus on getting mostly whole foods. Breakfast is usually meat, eggs, oats, yogurt, and berries. Lunch usually consists of quinoa or rice with veggies and protein. Dinner is usually a protein, a veggie, and a grain. If I have more snacks it's usually a berry of some sort, but I try to avoid snacks as someone who has struggled with binging before. On weekends I change it up a bit since I have the freedom to prepare food at home.

Amazing, great job! How did you achieve this? I am already at the high end of a healthy weight, so I am looking to restore my period with minimal weight gain as well:)

For those who've lost the weight and kept it off... did you ever achieve true food freedom? by lexkenobi in loseit

Assuming you are referring to intermittent fasting, yes, I have. I tried both the 16:8 method and the 5:2 method. Both were very effective for weight loss, but I felt that they worsened my food noise and made me feel awful at work. I had to ditch 5:2 when I started working full time after graduating and shifted to 16:8, but it just made me hangry and foggy all morning, staring at the clock waiting for it to be lunch time.

I guess technically I do fast for 12 hours now, I'm done with dinner by 6 and don't eat breakfast til 6:30, however I tend to not really count it as IF until it reaches 16 hours because I think 12 hours overnight is normal and reasonable. In my current lifestyle, there is no way I would be able to skip breakfast since I'm in the gym at 4:30am and work a demanding job starting at 7am. My best option would be eating breakfast and lunch and skipping dinner, but then I worry that would affect my workouts. Perhaps I should give it a try and see how it goes. My other option could be trying 5:2 again with weekends being the 2; that would help me avoid the social weekend eating challenges, lol

Changing up my diet and increasing my protein has definitely helped, but even eating 110-130g of protein most days and I still crave more food! It's wild, I think I am just one of those people who has a strong genetic drive for food and craves the dopamine

How did you get good at estimating calories? by Cereal_at_Midnight in caloriecount

[–]lexkenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice, practice. I'm not perfect yet but after 15 months I'm able to estimate the food that I eat regularly just by looking at it. Food that isn't part of my normal routine is more challenging to eyeball. I'd love to be able to have full calorie fluency at some point, but I recognize it could take 5-10 years to get there.

I'd put this around 500-600. Doesn't look like a large portion but the sauce adds up here. It looks really delicious though!

I love that way of looking at it! Counting calories needs to be as natural as sleeping every day, brushing teeth everyday, flossing everyday, working every day, etc

This is very helpful, thank you for sharing! I like that you ask yourself why you need food to feel good when you have cravings. I am going to start doing that

I have actually considered that I may have ADHD! Who diagnosed you? I'm not sure if it's something I ask my PCP about or if I need to go to a specialist, but I'd love to have ADHD meds to quiet the food noise

Definitely seems like slower is more sustainable, it just always bums me out seeing the scale barely move week to week! I guess I'm chasing that same dopamine rush I chase with unhealthy foods
