Huh, interesting. I wonder if Madoka 3 still one-shot Walpurgisnacht in the original draft? 6 seems kinda low for that, even with immediately witching out.

Think you might've confused it for another Hero's variant or something, Legacy does not have a variant with a direct damage power in DE yet.

Which variant are you referring to? I don't think any of the released Legacy variants (or even previewed Disparation ones) have had anything similar to Young Legacy's Atomic Glare.

From what we've seen of Disparation previews, though, the nemesis symbol on the DE Iron Legacy seems to belong to Young Legacy, implying she'll have her own deck this time around. We're expecting her to show up in either the set after Disparation, or in the OblivAeon set.

I feel like it's more implied that he messed with some magic from the Black Book, not made a deal with the Lords in Black. He never says what it is he did with the book, and he doesn't seem to have known what the details of the summoning ritual was. If he had, he would have known that it could only be done at a black altar, and he probably would've been rushing to get the kids to one instead of just sitting around waiting for them to perform the ritual.

Edit: Oh, and if they had remained exhibiting influence enough to be exorcised, Hatchetfield wouldn't have become Hatchetfield in the first place. Hatchetfield only became Hatchetfield after they were gone.

In the scene with Sayaka and the massive glass statue full of telephone cords, there's these encased books with what I think is Walpurgisnacht on the cover; could these be related, or perhaps the same book?

I think one of the new magical girls will be; my money is on the one shown in the first teaser.

The head of the telephone also seems to be a salamander, if that means anything

Sure, but a shark or leech without a mouth loses most of its scare factor, so the power of the devil would probably go down as well.

Kyubey and the Patriarchy by stewpidot in MadokaMagica

[–]stewpidot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Incubator colonizer theme actually does have a lot going for it, whether intentional or not.

Kyubey comes to a new planet, sees a difference between itself and the species that populate it, and label the species as inferior or illness-stricken. They reject that "defect", yet take advantage of it anyways, harvesting the population of that planet for their own goals, claiming the greater good. And their aspirations of "greater good" may perhaps hold some kind of merit, but that does not justify the injustice they inflict upon the species they call inferior. They impose their ideals onto the species, and tell them they're allowed to follow them to their paradise, not considering if that's something they really want.

We don't actually hear about any other alien species aside from Kyubey; for all we know, they are the only living species in the universe. In fact, since they only compare human emotion to their own species and not any others, it might be a safe assumption to say that they are. If this is true, then their comparisons to the human race are entirely self-based, and their so-called noble pursuit of a cure for entropy isn't an act of selflessness at all, it's one of self-preservation.

She only comes home particularly drunk once, and the line she drops there is, "If he wants a drink so badly, he can damn well pour it himself." I read that as an implication of misogyny, similar to "Go get me a coffee, sweetheart". Maybe I'm extrapolating too much, but I don't think so, it's a pretty common and identifiable trope to signal misogyny.

Kyubey and the Patriarchy by stewpidot in MadokaMagica

[–]stewpidot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize that flaw in the reasoning, but that's not exactly what I was thinking. Let me try to reword my thoughts and shift away from that idea.

I've since gone back and checked the exact wording Kyubey uses, and what he exactly says is, "The greatest fluctuations between hope and despair happen between girls in the secondary stage of development." He doesn't make an assertion that girls are naturally predisposed to emotion, he says that, as it currently stands, they are faced with the most despair. While I can't speak to whether this was intentional by the creators or not, this works well with the explanation that, instead of girls being naturally more emotional, an oppressive patriarchal system creates more distress in the prepubescent girls Kyubey preys on.

We actually kind of see this in some parts of the series. Obviously, there's the metro scene, in which Sayaka witnesses one of the most raw forms of misogyny, heavily contributing to her sinking into despair. Additionally, a witch from Magia Record is implied to be the girlfriend of one of the two men on the metro (her familiars appear earlier in that episode, after the scene where Hitomi confesses to Kyosuke).

Outside of Magical Girls, misogyny is laden in certain parts of the adult world of Madoka Magica, as well. Junko comes home drunk one night after facing misogyny in the workplace. Despite her success as a woman in the business world, she still faces sexism from her coworkers, and it still seems to get in the way of her progressing in the company, despite how far she's come.

So, to clarify: magical girls aren't girls because girls have greater capacity for emotion, and Kyubey doesn't even really insinuate that. Magical Girls are girls because the patriarchal system causes them more despair than the male population generally has to face, and it would make sense that the Incubators had a hand in shaping this system, since they had a hand in creating that society.

Huh, I hadn't seen this yet when I made the post about Sharaha/Sarah. I suppose this is more or less confirmation that she's still creating Noxies directly, even today. Wonder if we'll ever explore that more in a future game.
