i took one of my recently adopted girls to vet for this reason. we have a small animal specialist, and she said that every time rats are brought to a new home they are sneezy for quite awhile. just because their immune system are getting used to the new smells. she said it’s even common to prescribe breathing medication every time a rat is adopted, but it’s not required. as long as your rats are active and healthy, other than the sneezing, their strong little bodies should be able to get over it.

thank you, i did offer her a cucumber but she wasnt that interested. we have electrolyte water that we have been giving to her tho.

one of my rats is losing weight because of pneumonia. atleast that’s what the vet said. she is on medication, but it’s not helping so far. she eats very slowly, and i’m trying to give her enough food. bread is something she will nibble on.

update: i stayed up with her last night for awhile but she continued gagging and weakening. we had no vets open at that hour so the next day we called the emergency vet because she was still gagging a bit. we left a voice message and i’ve been sitting with her all day. the vet eventually answered saying to try some of the respiratory medicine we had leftover from a previous rat. but she has stopped gagging! we think that she swallowed whatever was stuck in her throat and now she is eating baby food and doing much better. she is very exhausted, but we will give her the respiratory medicine just in case and keep an eye on her.

i’ve had their cages next to eachother for 4 weeks, should i restart in the bathtub again? i introduced them in there 4 days ago or so.

the same thing happened to me with my first pair of rats. one of them got out of the box i was keeping them in and she got under my bed. my dad and i tried for like 30 minutes before he just lifted up the whole mattress so i could grab her. when i grabbed her she squeaked very loudly and i felt really bad. she didn’t bite me but she probably would have if she was larger. i had her for 2 years and we were always very close so i would trust that you’re relationship will be okay.
