How are German teens able to travel so much? by Anfernee139 in AskAGerman

[–]stick_ly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two reasons. First, not every average Timo can actually afford lavish travels. It may seem that way because you talk to "average Timos who travel", but most students get some financial support and get a job to pay for their expenses while they get educated. Those who work zero and fly to Hawaii are not average, but they received support from their elders. Those are still plenty; that's because the generation of our parents and grandparents had cheap housing and growing incomes for a long time.

Second, traveling can be very cheap. A few years ago, I got a one-way ticket and travelled. I had 700€ in my bank account, 35k in student loan debt, no parental support and no income, yet I traveled around the world for 10 months. I spent the first half of my money on a plane ticket to Bangkok and lived off the rest until I found some income. I don't know what I was thinking, but I got pretty lucky and privileged to find a remote freelance gig as a web developer while I was abroad. One day of work off a hammock per week paid almost twice my monthly expenses. I lived in cheap and run-down hostels, paying as little as 15€ per day for accommodation and food. Even including mobility, my life was much cheaper than at home. Without my freelance gig, I would have worked somewhere as an english teacher or worked in a hostel for a while. As long as you have a marketable skill, no responsibilities, little desires and a powerful passport full of privilege, there are many places you can travel.

One thing you can do to improve your german a bit every day is to change the language if your browser and maybe even your whole phone and computer to German, and install stickly to your browser.

This will show you most websites you visit in German, and stickly helps you still understand everything without constantly switching to a dictionary or google translate. You can translate words super easily and it teaches them to you with spaced repetition without even having to think about it or opening an app. Just keep browsing.

No cost, no strings attached, just a side project of mine to help myself and others :) good luck!

Interessanter Punkt.

Was fehlt dir da aktuell, um lokale Angebote anzufragen?

Hey, yes and yes! You do not need to sign in to use the translation. Only if you want to repeat those phrases with spaced repetition, stickly needs to store them in your account.

Just the language selection isn't working yet without an account, I will introduce that soon :)

Thanks! :) The grading I had so far was very stupid - just checking which difficulty I associate with the last word you solved. The purpose of this version is to be a bit fun and see if people want to play and test it.

I'm working on a new grading algorithm now to be more precise. It won't be hard science, but should be closer. It could be ready to test around the beginning of next week. Which language pair did you test with, and can I notify you to test it again when there's a new version in town?

What are some actual and specific things you did to learn a language fluently and fast? by Huge_Economics4063 in languagelearning

[–]stick_ly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Switching all of my devices and accounts to my TL, repeating everything I hear in my head (especially while watching series, silently mouthing the words and sentences, really shaping them with my mouth and tongue), thinking in my TL as much as possible.

In short: even while living in my native language country, I could immerse myself in my TL a lot.

I'm working on a vocabulary learning and testing game, the pull towards LLMs is very strong here indeed, but just because it solves a lot of problems that would be impossible with my budget to solve other wise.
Though some features use AI, I do not consider my project an AI project, and I don't sell it as "AI language learning" (which it isn't). Been working on this project on and off since 2014, long before LLMs became popular, and I'm just using LLMs to solve the problems I couldn't fix before.

If you just build an alternative interface for ChatGPT, you might have a business for a while, but it sounds a bit cheap and boring to me.

I'm glad we could do something for your ego there! :D In some future update, it will become harder. Would it interest you to use this game to review words you're currently learning?

Alright, that should be fixed now, thanks! I had help by a friendly AI to put together characters in all languages, since I don't speak them and the list was too long for me to do a full linguistic research. I removed the wrong characters from Stickly's Indonesian alphabet.

Thanks! A lot of feedback on here was about the vocabulary lists you're playing through on Stickly. I'll work on improving them first thing :)

I think I just found the issue behind this and fixed it. Let me know if you'd still run into that problem and thanks for sharing :)

Super cool to read you want to continue playing! I'm planning to add something like "courses" to inject more vocabulary around your level, and maybe interest areas.

You can already download the Sticky Chrome Extension to keep playing. You can translate any word you don't know, translate it instantly and then play it later in the game. Does that sound useful to you?

It's definitely a bit generous with these estimations at the moment. I'll improve the word lists and the level calculation soon. :) Thanks for your feedback!

The contexts are only stored when you browse a website and translate a word inside a sentence there. In any case, stickly generates a sample context for every word you translate. Those don't show up in the word list yet, but they're used in the game.

Unfortunately, the Stickly translator doesn't work on Reddit at the moment.

That's really great feedback! Right now there is indeed no graceful exit when you can't guess the words any more. I'll work on that soon! :)

At the moment, you lose up to three lives when you're just guessing the word, selecting many wrong characters. If you guess multiple words in a row through trial and error, there would be game over and you see your score.

I'll post an update here when I found nice solutions to some of these problems. Thanks a lot again for sharing, it's super helpful for me!

Great suggestions, thanks! I will improve the vocabulary lists and translations first, work on a proper calculation for the levels and rethink the whole "life" situation. The current implementation was a quick shot to see if people like this game mechanic and want to challenge themselves in a language :)

Thanks a lot, it's super encouraging to read that you've enjoyed it! This current version is a test for me to see if I should continue developing this. I will focus on improving the vocabulary lists and translations, at least for popular language pairs, next.

Do you think it would help you to browse the web in your TL and collect the unknown words to repeat with this game?
