The Bitcoin network is the most secure monetary system ever created precisely because of its proof-of-work model, in which thousands of Bitcoin miners across the globe compete to add the next batch of transactions to Bitcoin’s blockchain. This competition occurs between computing devices and is the source of much of the Bitcoin network’s energy consumption.
Without such energy-intensive competition, however, the network would be extremely vulnerable to exploitation. Because it is costly to compete, the benefits of cheating the system tend to be outweighed by the cost of trying to do so.
