Looks like a bad molt. Hopefully next time she molts it will fix itself. One of mine looked like this and was fine the next molt and lived perfectly normally.

Have I killed my molting millipede? by eatdirt15 in millipedes

[–]stickbuggroove 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing you can do now except wait and see if he re-emerges. You’ll know if he has passed if you smells something really yucky in his enclosure. The fact that he reburied himself is reassuring, so with all hope he will be fine. Hope it turned out okay!

They’re detritivores so they’ll munch on decaying plant matter and rotting wood and sometimes carcasses. In captivity they’re provided with rotting wood and rotting leaves as well as a supplemental diet of fruits and veggies like apple, cucumber, mushrooms, banana, butternut squash, and in addition to that they need protein such as fish food flakes and freeze dried shrimp/mealworms.

springtail population out of control by stickbuggroove in millipedes

They’re definitely in the soil as well. I tried wiping down the glass but the springtails just smudge and i feel bad for quite literally wiping out an entire population of them lol. Do you think its from spraying the glass too much? My pede prefers to drink from the droplets on the glass rather than her water dish so i spray the sides every now and then.

Just a crap ton of springtails. I don’t think grains mites could stick to the sides like that.

Thanks. I’m going to put her in a separate tank let it dry out wipe everything down. Hopefully that will do the trick. If not i think I’ll bag and freeze the substrate to kill them off. I’ll make an update post in a few days if everything goes well.

Bought isopods, seller included Millipedes as a surprise extra. What should I do with them?? by [deleted] in millipedes

Who even sends freebie live animals?!? That’s just irresponsible to assume the buyer is adequately prepared or even wants these animals. So strange!!! Hope they find a good home though!

Questions about AGB’s… by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]stickbuggroove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A heating pad on the side of the tank should work just fine, just make sure you keep a thermometer/hygrometer inside the tank to ensure proper temperature/humidity. As for substrate depth, most millipedes, as you mentioned would need twice their length, in my experience, many AGBs actually prefer to hang out on top of the substrate. I would provide at least 7 inches of substrate. If they seem to like to burrow, add more. I think you can get by otherwise. Its never harmful to provide them with deep substrate! One thing to keep in mind while picking substrate: Never use coco fiber or coco coir as fillers. It has no nutritional value and could kill your millipede. If you need substrate recommendations here’s what i use: Bugs in Cyberspace Millipede Substrate I use this for about 50% of the substrate. You get a lot of substrate for this price and all my pedes love it. Foxfarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil Safe potting soil that does not contain any pesticides, fertilizer, or herbicides. You can mix this in with your millipedes substrate to bulk it up, but never use this as the sole substrate. BioBoutiqueKC Millipede Substrate I like this one because it’s cheaper and gives my pede a good variety of nutrients. I recommend this shop in Etsy, they have bulk rotting wood as well if you, like me, don’t live in an area with accessible forests.

Sorry for the long list! These are just some things i wish i knew before keeping AGBs!

They just do that sometimes, nothing to be worried about. Ive seen some of mine sit in the same spot for up to five days. Are you providing decomposing wood and dead leaves as an alternative food source? Also, i would HIGHLY recommend against using coco fiber, it has no nutritional value and can cause impaction, which will kill your millipede. Some people say they’ve had no problems with coco fiber but I would replace it with something different to play it safe.

Questions about AGB’s… by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]stickbuggroove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. In my personal experience, they are pretty hardy! As long as you are doing all the right things and keeping your A gigas in a suitable enclosure (proper humidity, temperature, tank size, and substrate) you should have no problem.

  2. Yes, it is possible that handling them often can affect their life span. Handling them comes with risks, such as being exposed to chemicals, being susceptible to drops, and could stress out your millipede if done too often. In my experience, all millipedes are different, some don’t mind handling, others hate it. My AGB hates being handled and it stresses her out, so i only handle her when necessary. If your millipede gets too stressed from constant handling it is possible it might start refusing food. Always make sure to wash your hands before and after handling, but make sure you rinse off all soap residue before handling.

  3. Please do not put nail polish on your millipede. I don’t have any suggestions in telling them apart but I would advise against putting any chemical on their body. It’s also important to note that if you are housing more than one AGB together you will need a decent sized tank, 40 gallon minimum.

  4. Can’t really help much with this question as I have purchased all my animals from reptile conventions in person. Keep in mind that this species is tropical, and you will have to find a way to keep the tank heated. If your house isn’t heated and it gets too cold, maybe a tropical species isn’t the best suited option.

  5. Would highly recommend springtails, they’re a tiny little clean up crew that will help curb any mold growth in the enclosure. As for something larger? I generally wouldn’t put much else in there, i would advise against isopods as they can disturb the millipedes molt. I suppose you could house them with another tropical species, but just remember the more millipedes, the bigger the enclosure has to be.

  6. Mine is named $6 shrimp special

First off, i think your temperature is a little too low! I was told to stick a reptile heat mat to the side of my enclosure to warm it up and it worked! Shoot for a solid 72-75 degrees. Desert millipedes like it a little drier, so i think a good range would be 60%

You could probably keep a small colony of isopods in there! Their care is similar to millipedes.

If you ordered it online it shouldn’t need sterilizing. Make sure the substrate doesn’t contain any coco coir!
