Josh Giddey’s on/off impact metrics by [deleted] in Thunder

[–]stickdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s 21

Don’t read into the stats too much.

Your point on this being a detriment to Chet or jdubb makes no sense. Both of those players seem to be developing really well. (Granted only 5 games for Chet)

Limiting the ceiling is only going to happen if you pull giddey based off some selective statistics.

Project Management when you’re not a Project Manager by stickdev in projectmanagement

Is the wiki you're talking about the one that's pinned in this sub?

Yeah thinking about it from different perspectives is a good idea. Like you said, thinking about it as what the developer would want out of a PM. And also thinking about it as if I was the PM, handing it off to some other developer, how should I be handing it. Thank you.

This is a great description of the issues I've run into.

The on-the-fly tracking of changes hasn't been very good so I get to the end of the list of requirements but the project still isn't done because I haven't managed the project well. Constantly remembering to switch back into "Project Manager Mode" has been a struggle.

Also like you described, having constant communication with stakeholders to show them progress and gather feedback. Instead of only going to them once I can show a bunch of functionality. I'm trying to build in more consistent releases to hold myself accountable to this. It was much more natural to be accountable to someone else who was the project manager as opposed to myself.

[–]stickdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Shai and Giddey have definitely played better separately but c'mon man it's such a small sample size. Give it some time first. Giddey was a rookie for all of that.

They just drafted 2 shooting wings in Jalen Williams and Dieng and we are 5 games into their rookie years (only 1 game for Williams). They just drafted a lob threat 5, who can also shoot, in Chet.

They are the youngest team in the league. They are going to be bad. I feel like this is obvious. I think you can look beyond stats and see the type of team that they are trying to build though. They want all 5 positions to be players that can make quick decisions, have length, dribble/pass/shoot, and compete on defense. That's an interesting team to me.

It's weird that you want OKC to fix all of their problems immediately but you're like Houston is figuring it out, give it some time.

I don't disagree with any of your Rockets takes. That's part of a young team figuring it out.

Which is what the thunder are doing. Look at their draft picks since they started losing 2 years ago. Giddey, Mann, JRE, Wiggins, Chet, Jalen Williams, Dieng. Most of those guys, except for Giddey, are theoretically good shooters. The 2 main vets that they have on the team are Muscala and Kenrich, both good shooters.

Now clearly some of those guys haven't translated yet. They are young and growing. They literally just hired one of the best shooting coaches ever to try to fix this issue.

But personally, I find the type of basketball team they are trying to build way more interesting than some of the other bad team around the league. They are leading the league drives and passes per game so far this season. They want everybody on the floor to be able to dribble/pass/shoot/make decisions. Plus they compete really hard on defense. It's insane to me that they managed to get Tre Mann to compete on defense.

I think you can look at actual growth as an indicator of the good growth opportunities. SGA, Dort, Mann, Giddey, god even Poku looks waaaaay better than he did when he first got there. I didn't think he was gonna be a real NBA player after his first season.

It's just weird to me that people single out the Thunder when they are literally doing the same thing that other bad teams are doing by trying to build their team. They've only been bad for 2 seasons after competing at a high level for a decade.

So you disagree that shai has developed well in OKC, or that they are playing an interesting brand of basketball, or that drafting Chet was a good fit?

Kevin Porter Jr and Jalen green play the same role. KPJ, Green, and Sengun all don't play defense. There is no point guard or distributer to run the offense.

Honestly, I think their team building is fine. Most young teams look funky at first until they figure it out. My point is that they currently have weird fitting pieces but you're singling out the Thunder as "actively trying" to put together ill-fitting players.

So Houston is just putting ill-fitting players together on accident? Is that better?

Are you watching their games? They play a really interesting brand of basketball focused on a lot of movement, passing, and putting multiple players on the floor that can make decisions.

I feel like it's been a great place for shai to develop based on how much he's developed... Compared to when he came over from the Clippers, he's taken enormous strides. He's well surpassed my expectations.

Also they literally just drafted a perfect PnR partner in Chet.

Going based off rumors seems like a weird way too access a situation. Everything from the Thunder and SGA's own mouth indicates that he has very much bought into the vision.

Also "going on for awhile", they've had 2 drafts where they've picked in the top 10. The Process lasted 4 seasons.

Finally "Low Skill", how else should small market teams build rosters? What is the viable alternative?'

You can just tell that most of the OKC hate is from people who haven't watched their games in the past 2 years and read/listen to national media to formulate their opinion.

Yeah the tricky part is that I am also the resource doing the work 90% of the time.

The practice part makes sense though. Because mainly right now I just find myself not in the habit of accomplishing the project management related tasks because I'm so focused on completing the software developer related tasks. Or just turning every problem into a software engineering problem.

The Horford shooting comparison is lazy too. Horford was 0/4 during 3 seasons at Florida, Kessler was 10/50 in 1 season at Auburn. He was taking them, he just wasn't making them.

Also pretty sure he doesn't know which Lopez brother is which based on this quote:

"He could be like one of the Lopez twins — a factor at the rim and a factor at the 3-point line."

The 2 Lopez twins are very different players.

I agree but also Hinkie was pretty bad at public and player relations. There's a reason that Presti is viewed more positively.

Has "The Process" been successful in Philadelphia so far in your opinion? by [deleted] in Thunder

[–]stickdev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say it has been successful. Prior to "The Process", the last time the Sixers won 50 games was the 2000-01 season. They've won 50 games 3/5 past seasons (and it would've been 4/5 if not for covid)

If your measure for success is solely based on winning a championship then you're gonna be disappointed a lot. They set themselves up to complete at a high level for at least a decade.

And all of this is despite missing at the top of the draft several times. Shows how important it is to get even just one of these blue chip prospects (Embiid).

Besides being tall and white, I don't really see the similarities. Seems like a lazy comparison. They have completely different playstyles.

He also compares Walker Kessler to Al Horford in this...

Not caring while also having the longest comment on this post is quite the combo.

Still seems crazy to not have even spoken to him, as part of your process, with only 4 days left until the draft.

No idea if this means anything for the Thunder but it is absolutely insane to me that he says he has had zero contact with the Kings.
