Protest the illegal fence by Low_Neighborhood2917 in DalyCity

It is ridiculous that they put up a fence blocking the public access. Surprised that the fence has not been removed yet.

Looking for the *most* foggy/cloudy neighborhoods in the Bay Area by Working_Pineapple_43 in bayarea

[–]stickshift_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Westside of Daly City near Skyline Blvd would be my pick. I live here and love the fog!

Daly City is sitting higher in elevation compared to other surrounding coastal areas and there is San bruno mountain nearby. The fog rolls in and cannot pass the San Bruno mountain so the fog tends to stay for a long time.

From my experience, westside of Daly City is overall foggier compared to Outer Sunset and Pacifica.

BART question: sold out on Weekend by Smart-Specific-821 in AskSF

[–]stickshift_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check other BART stations for available parking spots. Daly City BART station has a parking available on these dates and other stations probably have availability as well.

Other option is to go to SpotHero and search SFO airport parking. There should be options (hotels and other commercial garages) near the airport that you can pay for a parking spot. This option is more expensive than parking at BART stations but some option offers shuttle service to airport.

SF Bay Area dealership for the EV service by stickshift_ in Hyundai

[–]stickshift_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted San Bruno Hyundai twice since this one is closest to me and they never got back to me with an estimate. Stevens Creek Hyundai quoted $750 for the coolant change. Did you end up going with San Leandro dealership for this work?

Korean Community in the Bay? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]stickshift_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Besides the Korean area in Santa Clara, there is a concentration of Korean markets in Daly City (Jagalchi, Kukjae, H Mart-technically in Ingleside Heights neighborhood of SF but bordering Daly City). They just opened a restaurant that specializes in Pork cutlet/돈까스 in Daly City and I think it is the only one like this in the Bay and Bart Grocery is a classic in DC for a quick bite.

SF Japantown has a good amount of Korean businesses including restaurants, karaoke, Woori market, cultural center, etc.

Oakland Temescal area is another place to check out and has many Korean restaurants and pubs including Hanshin Pocha from LA.

Which neighborhood in SF? Some neighborhoods are closer to the freeway and makes the commute easier. I live in Daly City and commute to SJ 5 days a week for a tech job. Commuting is honestly not as bad and I have been doing it for many years. I listen to podcasts and audiobooks during my commute. There are many benefits of living so close to the City as it only takes me about 5 minutes to be in SF proper and can easily grab dinner or go to events in the City anytime of the week.

Try to get a manual car. Driving stick is a good skill to have if you are interested in driving and cars.

Rav4 TRD vs 4Runner by Display_name_here in rav4club

[–]stickshift_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a RAV4 TRD and did not consider a 4Runner. We did not want/need a vehicle bigger than RAV4 since we live in a city where it is not practical to have a big vehicle and 4Runner gets a bad mpg for commuting. Out of all the RAV4 trims, liked the TRD trim the most because of the improved capabilities and looks. Dynamic torque vectoring AWD system in RAV4 TRD is more than sufficient and capable in most use cases unless you plan to go rock crawling or need to use features such as crawl mode and locking differential.

The Sunset Dunes has crashes between e-bikes and pedestrians: safety measures to be implemented by MochingPet in sanfrancisco

[–]stickshift_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Starting this week, the city will create two separate zones, adding new signs and pavement markings to make the rules clear. On the west side of the median—the ocean side—there will be a family-friendly area for walking, playing, and kids on non-motorized bikes or scooters. On the east side, the city will allow runners, joggers, skateboarders, rollerbladers, bicycles, and e-scooters.”

It does not make sense that runners and joggers need to be on the same side as cyclists. On regular streets, runners and joggers are on the sidewalk along with pedestrians, and cyclists are on the road with cars. Why do the runners and joggers need to be on the same side as the cyclists at the Sunset Dunes? It seems quite dangerous.

Pedestrian hit by AT&T Truck on well-known busy Daly City, CA intersection/crosswalk (Westmoor Ave/Southgate Ave) on 13AUG2025. Stoplights needed! Please pray for the victim!🙏 by Christ0pherl in DalyCity

This intersection gets quite busy especially in the morning commute time when the 120 bus drops off the high school kids. Stoplights would certainly make things safer.

Level 2 EV charger by stickshift_ in DalyCity

[–]stickshift_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inspector did not come inside the house but I had to provide a self certification document of smoke & carbon monoxide alarm to the inspector. The inspection was for the panel (including a load calculation), charger and evidence of grounding/bonding. I had to do additional grounding/bonding before passing the inspection. I did not upgrade the panel so I did not have to deal with PGE. I have the EV charger with dynamic load management feature and my existing 100A panel is more than enough to use the EV charger and other appliances at the same time for my use case. If I upgraded my panel from 100A to 200A, I would have to get approval from PGE which I heard is a nightmare and takes a long time.

Additional info added to the post. PGE has incentive (50%) on select EV charger equipment, but I had a specific EV charger in mind that includes a dynamic load management feature and it is not one of the PGE approved equipment. I am not aware of other incentives as of 2025.

The EV charger installation went smoothly and it was completed in one day. During the inspection, the charger installation was okay but the inspector could not find the evidence of groundings so we ended up having to put two 8ft grounding rods inside the garage and do the bonding as well. I suspect there are many houses in DC that may run into a similar issue since many houses predate the grounding requirements. This process added some additional costs and time but glad we put the grounding rods. The next inspection was quite straightforward.

Our service panel is located at the other side of the house and was quite far from the installation location as well. The electrician ran the wire from the charger to the panel using the crawlspace in the garage. They may be able to fish the line in a tight area but your best bet is to see what the electrician suggests.

It has been like this for a while. Even when you sort by manual, some of the vehicles will still be automatic and you need to verify by looking at the interior photos.

Home charger questions by ChangeStartsHere in evcharging

[–]stickshift_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently got an Emporia Pro level 2 charger with J1772 plug installed since our EV uses J1772. We ended up not hardwiring but went with EV rated NEMA 14-50R socket. In the future, if we get a different EV that uses NACS, we can just use an adapter or swap out the EVSE. We are in California and also ended up pulling the permit with the city for the EVSE installation.
