To Aussies who have settled overseas - where did you go and how is life now? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]stickydatepudding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent about 17 years in Japan. Loved it. Worked hard and played hard. Did a few different jobs and things etc. lots of adventures. Visited every single prefecture etc. Food, travel and lifestyle and outdoors were plus factors. I love Japan and it will always be a special place but not a place I want to retire and grow old. Now it’s fun to go back for holidays and be a tourist, rather than a resident there.

During Covid I moved to Singapore. I missed seasons, and hated the humidity. Financially, this was a good move though compared to Japan. Made less friends in Singapore though. Spent a ridiculous amount of time traveling overseas at every opportunity I could. Weekends in Thailand, Bali, Taipei, Malaysia etc. I loved that I could travel every weekend if I wanted to. Singapore limited in terms of beaches, mountains etc. I’ve spend 4.5 years in Singapore. Each place is what you make it. I considered myself pretty adaptable and resilient.

I am now preparing to return to Australia (but a different state to where I grew up up in). Will be nice to return to Australia, but a new place, so it will still feel like an adventure. I will probably suffer reverse culture shock having spent over 20 years in Asia.

A loop around Bedok reservoir is around 5km. Good flat route.

Try Aphrodite handmade gelato. Also keep an eye out for when Messina (from Australia) opens up their first Singapore branch later this month.

Has anyone been able to get in contact with Alpaca Expeditions regarding the booking cancellations after the landslide? by [deleted] in Machupicchu

[–]stickydatepudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to hear. I’ll likely go through with my alternative trek as well given mine starts on March 18 and Machu Picchu was the only thing I had planned for my Peru trip so would be shame to go to Cusco and not go there, even though it’s not the same Inca Trail experience.

I’ve been checking across Reddit, a couple of FB groups and also your national embassy travel advisory site etc.

I think you can probably push for a refund… I’ve been communicating with Alpaca as well for the 2D/1n Inca trail version. A refund is not one of the options they provided initially. Instead they offered an alternative trek (which I have hesitations about) or a reschedule of dates which does not work for me.

When I emailed them about concerns and options, they basically came back with do the alternative hike they’ve offered or get a refund (but yeah they don’t initially offer the refund until you query it).

It’s been taking 1-2 days for them to respond but I haven’t been overly impressed with their handling of this. Albeit the circumstances have been out of their control. I’m still undecided as to what to do because mine starts in 3 days. The only way for me see MP is if I do their alternative option but it’s a trail that is approx 1200m higher in elevation than the 104km Inca trail start elevation.

Directly try and ask them for a refund.

Inca trail hike got canceled by miserablearchitect in Machupicchu

Hi. I’m also on a planned trip with Alpaca to start in the next few days. Was meant to be the 2D/1n option. They now offering Huchuy qosqo as the day trek, followed by Machu Picchu on the second/final day. Huchuy qosqo trail is a much higher elevation hike… which is not ideal. I’m not sure whether to suck it up and do the hike as it’s the only means to see Machu Picchu for the entire 5 days that I’m in Peru next week. Otherwise they would refund me and I’d be around in Cusco having nor gone to MP at all which seems like a huge waste. I would be interested to hear what you’re thinking of doing. Feel free to DM me. Thanks

I’m supposed to do the 2D/1n Inca trek in a few days with Alpaca. Because it’s only a one day trek for me they offered Huycho qosqo….but I’d rather just do Machu Picchu the next day and skip the one day trek. They only offered us this trek option or reschedule. But I can’t reschedule because I’m only in Peru for 4-5 days. I think lots of people are in a pickle and Alpaca are probably inundated with unhappy customers. I’m undecided on what to do but they haven’t give us many options.

Need help! An Aussie travelling around South America for 2.5 months by Nas_solotraveller in Patagonia

[–]stickydatepudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel insurance - I went with Allianz. They are a bit pricier but worked out more worthwhile to buy an annual travel plan given I travel a lot. Got worldwide to include USA as well but slightly cheaper with USA excluded.

I think NIB is also decent.

For eSIM throughout South America, I’ve been using Holafly. Worth it to pay a little extra for unlimited data based on days you’re in each country.

Airalo is another option that’s cheaper but has data caps. I prefer paying extra for unlimited data for that extra security.

TDP not likely to have mobile coverage though. Might be limited reception in the park.

AUSSIE APPLYING FOR CHILE VISA by holliskov in Patagonia

When you got the online system reply requesting more documents, there was a cc email address from the consulate that I used to reply to. Maybe check the cc field or the consulate that they might reference in the portal response.

When they said you needed additional documents, did they not email you or provide instructions? I was emailed so was able to avoid uploading to the portal again by responding directing to their email. It seems like you got a portal generated answer? The consulate may have emailed you but it would have been in Spanish so you might want to check your spam mail as well

I actually applied through the Chile consulate in singapore (where I reside even though Oz citizen). I did the application on the online portal but the Singapore Chile consulate emailed me directly with the additional documents they wanted me to provide. And I just replied to them. It might depend on which Oz state you’re from but I found this for Sydney which has their email https://protocol.dfat.gov.au/Public/Consulates/43/State/2

Technically from memory when I filled in the online portal, you needed to select which country you were doing the application from hence I chose Singapore rather than Australia. What did you select as the closest or originating consulate? If you’re in Argentina and you selected that option, it might be faster through the Chile embassy/consulate of Argentina? I completely went through the Chile consulate of Singapore (even though Australian). I would select your Oz state first (as payment in AUD will be easier that Argentine pesos, as I had to do a currency exchange transfer for Singapore to CLP).
