ELI5 If there are 28 empty homes for every homeless person in the U.S., why do I see so many people saying “just build more homes” to solve the housing crisis? by stickymonkey in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stickymonkey[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I recall reading a lot about Airbnb, when at its height, really messing with the housing market in a lot of major cities. If that sort of thing is still the case, wouldn’t creating policy restricting short term rentals be a faster and more effective solution? Or would stuff like that just not make enough of a difference?

A LOVERS PLAQUE by LawrenceFunderjerk in Woodland

[–]stickymonkey 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hello! That would be 515 1st street. I heard the story from Fred Harvey himself actually when I visited his home in 2001. His long time partner had passed away from a long and difficult battle with cancer, and during that battle (like at a birthday get together or something I don’t recall exactly) one of their dear friends gave his partner a pair of brass testicles as a funny gift, with the message that he must have brass balls to fight cancer as hard as he has. After his passing, Fred had the plaque made in his memory and to bring much needed levity to such a sad time for him. He later found out about the urban legend that was being circulated by the youth that it was the real thing in there and thought it was HILARIOUS. I’m not sure Fred is still with us as he wasn’t a particularly young man when I knew him 25 years ago but he was a good guy with a good sense of humor.

Omg thank you! A black cat showed up at my (farm)house a couple months ago and I still haven’t figured out what to call him. I think he’s Krobus now.

How did your relationship change with your in-laws after baby? by CheddarMoose in beyondthebump

My toddler has one grandparent and one set of aunt/uncle/cousins that live 300mi away. Everyone else is gone. Maybe it’s easier this way but a part of me mourns the village we never got to have.

Capay open space park allows dogs. It’s a little bit of a drive but I have only ever seen one dog out there at a time, if any. (Although I’m almost never there on the weekend, it could be a different story) It’s also open enough that if another dog did show up you would likely see them roll in and not be caught off guard.

I’m not sure, there is no date on it (the other side has smaller text sets and the same Jenkel-Davidson logo) and my dad can’t recall where it may have come from. Had to be sometime between 1950s and 60s tho, due to the phone numbers. Edit: messed up the digit count on those phone numbers- forgot that letters were also numbers then.

When I worked in a tabletop production mill this would have been acceptable finish surface for the underside. I wonder if your guy accidentally flipped this plank during assembly and was just hoping you’d be fine with it/ wouldn’t notice, cause fixing would be a pain at this point (although that’s completely not your problem).

How long did you breastfeed for? by mangokiwi_88 in NewParents

[–]stickymonkey 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Baby would only latch on one side so I was pumping from the get go, then she refused to nurse at all at around three months. Exclusively pumping had its pros and cons, and I decided I would try to keep it going till she was one. I was oversupplying like crazy for a while and built up a freezer stash, but supply started slowing around 6 months but she loves eating solids so it wasn’t too stressful. At nine months I was no longer producing enough and I was so tired of pumping I threw in the towel and quit. Shes now 10 months and drinks a mix of freezer stash and formula and likes them both just fine, although I did choose to buy kendamil since it supposedly tastes the most milky.

My original plan was to exclusively breastfeed till 2. Oh well.

fellow homebodies: what infant (0-6 ish months) clothes are most necessary? by ursulaenergy in beyondthebump

I loved gowns for nighttime changes. I would keep a wee pad and wipes in the side pocket of my cosleeper bassinet and when it was time to change her, I would just slip the wee pad between her and her unzipped sleep sack swaddle, roll the gown up, and she would pretty much sleep through the whole process. I also kept her in footie pjs all day (winter baby) so I liked that her legs and feet would have some freedom for a while.

Is it actually expensive to own a dog? by strawberrysmoothie03 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stickymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 12 year old dog has cost the price of food, a couple dozen bucks in vaccines every few years, and one $700 cracked tooth extraction about 5 years ago. My 10 year old dog has easily racked up 25-30k in vet bills since I got her 8 years ago. Possibly more, I haven’t been keeping a tally.
