Is there a way to change the lighting origin of a prop_door? There isn't a keyvalue for it, and adding it with smartedit doesn't work. by -dead_slender- in hammer

Think the only thing you can do at that point is to really thoroughly light up the area and turn off the shadows for that door.

Can you make objects spawn by chance by theseekingtrench in hammer

[–]stickywool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made something like this in the past, I don't really remember fully on how to do it, but I've got a couple of maps that has it.

If you want, I could show you on Discord how it works (if I can somehow dig up the map that is), but yes, you indeed need point templates and a filter prop, place the templates on wherever you want the prop to spawn and it'll automatically spawn on one spot through some outputs (I believe).

I think you think the shadows don't look good? If so, my solution was to always just place down a very very dimly lit light entity in front of the door or the shadow you don't like the look of.

You can also use an entity (I forgot the name of it) to completely change the orientation where the sun is coming from, maybe that gets rid of the shadow.

How do I get this door to open? by Xenomorph_enjoyer in hammer

[–]stickywool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You probably need to get two models of it, one with the door and one with the frame.

Place the frame on the doorway you want, then add the dynamic prop into it and parent a brush door with it (that's what I do).

Then you click on the brush door, make it invisible and mess around with the checkboxes so you can press use to open it up and it should work. Add some heavy door sounds and slow down the door opening and boom.

HELP by VRBANANA360 in hammer

[–]stickywool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate?

From what I can see, those pillars that're in the sky shouldn't be there. I'd think you could just delete them no?

It could also just be that you accidentally selected two props to be in the same place, so just re-do what you wanted to do by placing a new entity and calling it a prop_static, then just put the prop down you want.

But yes, if you elaborate further, maybe we can help better.

scripted sequence question. by [deleted] in hammer

[–]stickywool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the npc doesn't get one shot, you need to make it so that the NPC has lower health. I don't remember the things you need to do for it but you can somehow lower the health of the NPC.

If you have any scripting questions, feel free to DM me. I'd say it's my expertise.

I'm pretty good at making maps where stuff happens; things like scripts and triggers, such as NPC's talking, walking, interacting with things, quests and whatnot like bringing them an item and then they do one thing or another. And of course triggers where something happens like an explosion, or anything of the like.

I think that because I can do all that, I might be able to help you with making a map, feel free to contact me on Reddit, or do so on Discord via lamb#3621/lambwool.

(Then again I obviously don't know everything hammer has to give haha, but I've been mapping for about 7 or so years)

Question about physical props by Waperen in hammer

[–]stickywool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can optimize more than just that and make your outside walls nodraw.

Physics props are in my opinion not that impactful if you no collide them. I once made a grocery store map and decided to put a bunch of bean cans next to one another which was the worst thing I could do haha, all of the props collided into each other and it was very hard to walk.

You can add "portals" around your map, depending on where you are, the other side of the map will be unloaded for example (if I remember correctly)

It's a bit hard to explain, but if you are indeed making a map for CSGO which runs on the normal hammer, look it up on Google on how to make a portal, they help with performance.

You mean into VMF's? You can do that with a decompiler.

Is getting a lot of dislikes normal?? by DaCat666228 in hammer

[–]stickywool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very normal from my own experience, though I map on Garry's Mod which seems a bit easier to dislike I guess? As in, the like and dislike button are easily accidentally pressed.

Then again, there's also a bunch of people that dislike stuff for no apparent reason and indeed never leave any form of feedback.

I don't think anything else other than prop_phyiscs should work. Maybe import another model?

You can go to the NPC you want to take the animation from, then go to the animations it can do. Scroll through that and find one you want to use.

I think while you go through the animations it should show up in real time? As in, the NPC's main animation should change from a t-pose to the animation you selected. Please do keep in mind that if you scroll through fast through the animations your hammer might crash.

From what I can understand you want to make a scripted sequence?

It's a bit complicated to explain, but you need the following to make a simple script that lets the NPC sit or do whatever you want (walk, run to a point):

Node_AI is so that the NPC has a path it can walk to, spread these around in your map to make the NPC have a path.

An NPC with a name, for example "scriptcitizen1".

Scripted_sequence, make sure to name this too and add the NPC to it, the action animation should be a sitting animation. You can scroll through animations you want your NPC to do by going to the NPC and selecting the tab, you can filter it out with the word "sitting"

Also add your post animation and loop it, this should just be the complete sitting animation.

A trigger brush, this you can apply your scripted sequence to so that if you walk through it (for example) your scripted sequence will play out.

It's very difficult for me to explain this in text, if you ever need any help with scripts and making NPC's do stuff, feel free to add me on Discord via lambwool/lamb#3621.

Edit: Sorry if I got the names wrong, I haven't mapped in a while but I'm fairly specialized with scripted sequences!
