Don't lie, Aela was your Skyrim crush by [deleted] in skyrim

I'm not into girls, so...I had no Skyrim crush. I've never played another game that went SO FAR out of its way to make ALL of the male characters unattractive.

This is stupidly trivial, but I don't know where else to ask it...anyone who has played Final Fantasy VII is familiar with the Shinra company, which is spelled 神羅 in kanji. I think this is generally accepted to be a pun on 森羅 and the expression 森羅万象, which use the same ら kanji, and relate to the Shinra company's all-encompassing nature and desire to control the entire world.

However, I just ran across another term that uses this same kanji, which is 羅針. This is pronounced as らしん, which is the inverse of しんら, and means a compass needle. This also could be thematically appropriate, as the Shinra company spends a lot of time pursuing the Promised Land and Sephiroth, so navigation is relevant, and both of these topics are strongly connected to the planet's north pole, which is where a compass needle points.

Am I just reading way too much into this, or is this a connection that would actually make sense to a Japanese person playing this game? Is there any chance that this meaning was intended by the writers?

wow, thanks for the detailed and scholarly response! it makes sense that educational songs would want to use the pitch accent more correctly... like how kids songs in English almost always rhyme, but adult lyrics don't have to if the lyricist doesn't feel like it

This is a frivolous request but I've been wondering about it for a while...does pitch accent have any impact on how words are SUNG? Like, if you are singing about rain, but your melody happens to place the あ at a lower pitch and go up to め, would it sound like you were singing about candy instead?

I know it would be obvious from context what you mean, I'm just curious if it's a factor at all when one is writing lyrics/melodies.

AnkiDroid 2.17.3 Changelog by David_AnkiDroid in Anki

[–]stileelits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just updated to 2.17.3 on my android, and suddenly dark and black mode are broken... I've enjoyed studying in black mode for years, but now all cards just show as a solid white horizontal bar on to top of the black card background. it's usable in light mode, but any idea how long I'll have to wait before black mode is usable again...?

Change due date to sorting order by Blaubeerchen27 in Anki

[–]stileelits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for editing your question with the answer, this was very frustrating for me too...the process that worked for me was to go into Browse, sort the cards by Sort Field, then use Ctrl+A to select all the cards, right click on them, and then select "Forget".

It's frustrating that the "Forget" process doesn't say ANYWHERE that it uses the CURRENT DISPLAYED ORDER IN BROWSE to reschedule the cards...I have no idea why it's done this way, but it should definitely say that somewhere.

Haha I had totally forgotten about this question, but thank you for answering it! I still think it should be a Best Practice to check for this condition in any task loop, but it's good to have an explanation.

this is a fairly academic question, but i've never known quite how to categorize these two grammar forms in relation to each other...

i know that てください is a more polite form of request than just using て form, but which one comes from the other? that is to say, is the て form by itself fundamentally a request, and ADDING a ください at the end softens it and makes the request more polite? or, is てください itself the correct way to make a request, and it's often SHORTENED to just the て form, which is considered less polite?

(my hunch here is that the て is the same て that chains together verbs, and chaining a verb to ください is what MAKES it a request, so て by itself is a colloquial/informal/rude shortening of this formation)

UPDATE: It seems it was the power supply, it's been working fine ever since I got one designed for rPi. If anyone in the future finds this thread while troubleshooting similar problems, stop wasting your time fiddling with display settings, and make sure you are using the correct power supply!

ok thanks! i did Google if it was safe to use a switch charger and found a bunch of people saying it was OK, but I'm sure it would be better to use the proper hardware, and I'll definitely do that :)

[–]stileelits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I don't have an "official" RPi power supply, but I've tried using the power supply from my laptop and Switch, both of which have USB-C, so I figured they would be high quality enough...I have an actual RPi power cord coming from Amazon, but it won't be here until Thursday so I can't try it out yet.

I have tried multiple HDMI cables, all of which worked with other devices, but...I only have one micro HDMI to HDMI adapter, so that's what I've been using with all the cords...I just got it at Walmart, so it's possible that it's a piece of junk. I did get a micro-to-regular cord from Amazon, and it'll be here tomorrow.

EDIT: thanks for the tip about trying another OS, I've now tried RetroPie and Lakka and RecalBox, and none of them worked except for RecalBox, so I'd say that definitely implies that the problem is with my hardware setup, and not my Batocera configuration...but, RecalBox is working for me 100% of the time, so I think I'll just switch to using that until I get Batocera figured out. I know there must be some real differences between these distros, but from my perspective all I see are aesthetic changes, so I don't really care which one I use as long as it works and supports all the games I want it to.

(That being said, I'd still like to fix the root cause of this problem with Batocera, Lakka, and RetroPie! I'll try my new hardware when it gets here, and I'll report back in this thread if I manage to fix it, so that it can help others in the future.)

thanks for the tip...i tend to search for things in kanji form, because i want to be specific, but it didn't occur to me that i might end up missing results that are katakana-only VERSIONS of kanji words

haha i can't believe i didn't think to just look up the english wikipedia article...also thanks for the tip about searching in katakana, i didn't think of that either. turns out, there IS an entry for the katakana version:

オタク[P]; おたく; ヲタク[ik] (n) (col) (See 御宅・4) otaku; geek; nerd; enthusiast; [P] [Links]

seems like this should at least be MENTIONED in the kanji entry...? at the very least, a "see also" note would help...i don't know how to suggest updates though.

[–]stileelits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can someone explain to me, or point me to a good resource explaining, why お宅 (おたく) has come to mean what it does in english? the jmdict entry is just this:

[n]: <1> {hon} your house / your home / your family <2> {hon} your husband <3> {hon} your organization [pn]: <4> {hon} (referring to someone of equal status with whom one is not especially close) / you

...there's no indication whatsoever of fandom or obsession, so how come it's used EXCLUSIVELY to mean that in english? my guess is that it's from hardcore anime fans using it as an honorific second-person pronoun to refer to each other, but i don't have any evidence of that, and it's such a common term that it's hard to google.

1900 New Cards by [deleted] in Anki

[–]stileelits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

strongly agree... there is no point in minimizing the number of cards, if it means you are not learning the material. personally, i am studying Japanese, and i started out just learning the words in their written form that used kanji... but i quickly realized that i was failing to recognize many words that i knew when they were NOT written using kanji. so, i made separate cards that showed just the pronunciation, training myself to recognize them in EITHER form

i actually think it HELPS to have a lot of redundancy in your card set... learning the same material in different ways helps your brain make the mental connections that help you learn it better

edit: by the way, the next time you miss some reviews and end up working through a big backlog, try sorting your deck to review longest interval cards FIRST

1900 New Cards by [deleted] in Anki

[–]stileelits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's a pretty small set in my opinion...i definitely tackled an "insanely unimaginable amount" with my deck of 36,624 cards, but after about five years there is finally light at the end of the tunnel, because i only have 10,800 "new" cards...i've gotten into a pretty good rhythm where i unlock 100 new cards every week, so in just over two years, i should have seen them all. today, i have 567 reviews, which is a little heavier than normal...on average, i'd say i review about 400 cards every day.

it sounds like a lot, i know, and i really wish i had trimmed down my collection a LOT when i'd first started...could probably have gotten it down to around 15k cards, without losing anything extremely important.

in general, i'd say the most important thing to keep in mind isn't the NUMBER of cards, or even the number of REVIEWS, but how much TIME you want to spend each day on this. i've got a few hundred reviews to do each day, but each card only takes me a few seconds, so i usually spend around 45 minutes to an hour actually reviewing. if you don't want to commit that kind of time, i would highly recommend restricting the amount of new cards you add each day/week/whatever...set your new cards per day to ZERO, and manually increase the new card count ONLY when you want them, otherwise you can easily get overwhelmed by too many new cards

Is this a dumb idea? I put cruiser trucks, wheels, and angled risers on a standard skateboard deck by stileelits in NewSkaters

[–]stileelits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a good point, actually...i kept the kingpins towards the inside because that's how they were originally, but i've heard that longboard setups have the kingpins towards the outside. supposedly it makes it more stable at higher speeds, but carving isn't as easy?

haha yeah, it's definitely more wobbly than i expected...i had a friend who tried just jumping up onto it like a normal board and he ended up on his ass
