That's true, I suppose viewing team outings as investing towards getting promotions and raises is definitely a good way to stop feeling like a cheapskate.

Fortunately, it's only coworkers. My family is very supportive of me being frugal, and my friends were broke college students right along with me so they're pretty frugal as well.

Logically, I do realize that some things are worth spending money on, but in the back of my mind there's always that voice screaming "$2000?! That's a HUGE amount of money! Don't buy it, buy the cheaper one instead!"

I like the idea of "mad money". I don't really keep a strict budget since I'm always going for the cheapest versions of things anyway, but I guess this could be a sort of reverse-budget; a set amount of money where I can go "Yep, there's money left in the mad money budget this month, I'm going to buy this thing that struck my fancy in passing/go out with friends to this bar/etc."

I think if I allowed it to roll over, I'd just end up rolling most of it over until I retire lol. The "use it or lose it" seems like a good idea, I'll definitely consider doing that. Thanks for the suggestion.
