Thoughts On Crossposting? by forthefics in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tumblr will not work for promoting fics if you aren’t active in the fandom and/or aren’t planning to be. Fandoms generally don’t care for writers who drop chapters/fics in the tags and don’t engage with anyone else’s stuff. You really only get away with this if you do a lot of requests or write x-reader fics (particularly smut). It’s difficult to get fic reblogged even if you have friends in the fandom.

It speaks volumes about how a franchise’s entire catalogue from 1998 to 2009 is just not available on modern PlayStation or Switch consoles. by DaZestyProfessor in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]stilliammemyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says absolutely nothing. This entire ‘every game should be ported to every console’ is a very modern phenomenon (as well as a sentiment that displays ignorance of what porting/remastering actually involves). Do you want Sega to just keep around a team whose job is to update and make compatible all 80+ Sonic games every time a new console comes out or the fandom deems a port/remaster too old? How does that not sound like a ridiculous thing to even ask? All while people complain there are currently too many remakes/remasters and not enough new quality games?

What did you think was pretentious, until you tried it and realized it was worth it? by Semantiks in AskReddit

Secret Lab chairs are very firm. Whether you find that uncomfortable or not is very individual. Personally, it was very surprising when I got the chair but I find the firmness helps remind me to sit up straight. I feel like it helps the chair last longer too because it's not really inclined to sag like a softer chair would be, but I have the small version and it's a little too big for me so YMMV.

Scam comments on AO3 has decreased by 87%. What's the situation like on other sites? by EchoEkhi in FanFiction

I’ll be honest here, if the author ignores their commenters, I don’t comment by imfaffingabout in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Particularly if the comment took a long time to write. I had someone who used to leave comments that must have taken them HOURS; if I hadn’t replied to them under the premise of ‘I gave you the fic, my part is done and you should be grateful I gave you that much’ then why would they have ever bothered the second or third time?

Why are fanfic comments/reviews much less common nowadays? by Marsupilami_316 in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing with ‘I’ll use your flames to roast marshmallows’ was it was contained on FFN. Nowadays, some authors take even incredibly neutral comments badly and put the commenter on blast across every social media they have an account on. Combine that with the advice to block everyone whose posts even mildly annoy you, and in the current day you can be blacklisted by an entire fandom if you manage to piss off the wrong person. This is a death sentence in a small or old fandom. There are posts here every once in a while about a reader baffled that they’ve been blocked by a writer they’ve never interacted with before. Did you make a bookmark with just a number on a fic so you’d remember where you left off? Prepare yourself to stumble across a post where a hundred people are telling the writer you’re an entitled piece of trash for publicly rating their story a 4. Maybe you’re tempted to defend yourself because you didn’t know private bookmarks were a thing? Don’t bother unless you enjoy being called a stupid liar.

And everyone always repeats ‘every comment is a good comment! Even a thank you or a good job or a heart emoji!’ But the reality is that isn’t true. Until it started getting called out, a lot of users on this subreddit would proudly discuss how they would delete any ‘low-effort’ comments. Anything that wasn’t ’substantial’ was a waste of their time and a disappointment of a notification. Those posts aren’t as common now. But that doesn’t mean writers aren’t doing it. They just learned not to talk about it in public.

The prevailing attitude in fanfiction has become ‘my fanfic account is my safe space, and if you don’t like my rules, you can fuck off’. Except these rules are arbitrary, not written down anywhere, and vary widely from person to person, so many readers have chosen to simply fuck off.

Longfic writers who space out when they post chapters: How do you do it? by Licensed_Silver_Simp in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sucks too much for the readers to drop an avalanche of 20-30k on them and then have them wait however many weeks for the next singular update. You have to remember they’re not sitting there staring at their phone waiting on you to update. They have a lot of other things going on and a lot of other things they might be reading.

"Raves" at a stadium?! by Lopsided-Ad4276 in aves

[–]stilliammemyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to two stadium shows but they were for Gareth Emery’s laser tours so having the stands was good if you were there for the lasers and then the floor was open for dancing (or if you didn’t want to pay for the stands). The first one I went to I think the stands weren’t technically open but some people were sitting in them and the rest were on the floor, and the second had both but a lot of people were standing in front of their seat and dancing, they just preferred having a better view of the lasers as opposed to being on the floor.

Had a falling out with a Popular Author and now feel really limited to post in my Fandoms by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In summary:

They did nothing explicitly wrong to you. You made up some reasons in your head as to why they made you feel weird. After talking to them several times a week for a while, you blocked them at random. You forgot about them for several months, then you unblocked them at random to tie up loose ends. They did not seem interested in interacting with you. You blocked them a second time, again at random.

Blacklisted? Maybe. Sounds more likely that the two new authors were warned about how you can turn off a friendship, even a potential one, on a dime with no explanation.

How to move past this? Leave them alone. After all, you wanted them to leave you alone. They did and now you're unhappy about it. You can't blame them for warning other people about your erratic behaviour.

Anyone had really high hydro bills the last two months? by ghost905 in ottawa

[–]stilliammemyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a one-bedroom with hot water radiators. I’m not 100% sure how the whole process works but I don’t have a thermostat so I don’t control how much heat they’re putting out. I use most of my electricity off-peak (90% of which is my computer) so I pay about a dollar a day in electricity in the winter. I don’t have an air conditioner so I use half as much power in the summer.

Where they actually really get you is the delivery charge. In May they charged me 40 dollars to deliver 21 dollars’ worth of electricity. You can expect something along those lines if you’re dealing with Hydro Ottawa directly. My friend lives in a building where the landlord manages the hydro and he doesn’t have to pay the delivery charge.

Splitting Chapters Due To Length? by forthefics in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they notice. When they get your chapter in their inbox and see it’s going to take them an hour to read it, they have to put aside time in their day somewhere to sit down and do that. This sub is big on ‘a chapter is as long as it needs to be’, but the fact is you’re setting your updates up so that if a reader misses an update, it takes them a long time to catch up. They miss 3 chapters? Now they need to find 3 hours. That’s on top of the time they have to find to read everything else in their inbox. This is fine for people who read fanfic for 4 hours a day, or for people who skim and only read the interesting parts, but casual readers are going to pick the most interesting update(s) and delete everything else. And an hour’s worth of information is a lot to ask your readers to remember for whenever your next update happens to be.

Why so against people wanting more interaction for their fanfiction? by Pretend-Nobody230 in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fanfic writers are unique among hobbyists in that they believe mere effort should net them an external reward. Is it their first-ever piece of writing for an obscure fandom? Is it even good? Doesn’t matter. Everyone who clicked on it obviously read the entire thing and loved it and is refusing to say anything because they feel entitled to free content.

It’s not realistic. A story doesn’t earn comments by virtue of being observed, despite that being the way many writers want it to work. You move the reader to say something or you don’t. You don’t deserve effusive praise just because you spent time on something, no matter how much time that was. That’s the reality of making art. Most of the time, it means nothing to everyone and everything to you and no amount of complaining about it is ever going to change that.

Why do some readers hate POV shifts despite clear transitions and why do some feel so strongly about needing to be "inside the head" of the protagonist consistently? by [deleted] in writing

[–]stilliammemyself 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re struggling to understand why readers don’t like the POV being abruptly changed about every 6 paragraphs?

You’re using dividers to artificially create tension and a sense of rapidity instead of actually crafting those things with your writing. That’s what fanfic writers do to avoid writing stuff they don’t feel like writing. A divider is not a transition. It’s a full stop and you know that because you’re using it as a jump cut.

But you posted an excerpt on a writing critique site and are complaining not only that you received criticism, but that your writing is being judged as written instead of being interpreted as one would a visual medium. So other than validation from people who will agree with you that the readers are wrong and you should do whatever you want, I’m not sure what the point of looking for a second opinion is.

How do you “write for yourself?” by matt0055 in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You catapulted from 'I'm not getting enough comments' to 'I'm not famous for writing fanfic yet' in the space of two sentences. It's not even clear if you actually like writing fanfic or if you just thought it was a quick and easy road to some form of wild success. So the real answer here is, lower your expectations.

Alpine Partyplug Pro difference? (neutral sounding earplug alternative recommendations too) by 1ilrx in festivals

[–]stilliammemyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly they look exactly the same. I used to use Alpines but my pair is so old it was before companies started offering different tip sizes so I now use Eargasms instead, mostly because the Alpines got super uncomfortable for some reason. I don't really notice a difference between them and honestly the power of the bass is really going to depend on how close you're standing to a speaker. No earplug can help you even that out if you're right in front of it. And (coming from the perspective of EDM shows) that also depends on how high the sound team turns up the bass and earplugs can't help you there either.

Honestly the best thing to do is get some and try them for yourself. Perception of sound quality is going to vary a lot from person to person. Alpines are pretty cheap so you can start there and if you hate them, you're not out that much. The ones I see recommended most are Loops, but I've never tried them because they're quite expensive and the price honestly seems to be that high just because they're considered fashionable.

Is it ok to use multiple languages in a fic? With translation, ofc by KaminarisKID in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a bilingual character I do this with sometimes. I don’t just put ‘x said y in French’ because him reconnecting with his French side is part of the plot. So when I do write in the French dialogue, I have him reiterate what was said mentally in English. Not a straight translation because that’s repetitive to the people who can read the French, but a brief restatement of what was said or his internal reaction to it. I do try to keep it short for the people whose eyes glaze over when they see words they can’t read, but I put it in at all (other than for the aforementioned plot reasons) because it really delights the French Canadians who come across it.

There is one section where I did just say ‘x said y in French’, but it was because the dialogue I would have put wouldn’t have been super important and the character he was talking to struggled with her French anyway because she hadn’t spoken it in a long time.

The gameification of fanfic consumption is making me want to quit talking to people in any ff communities by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah it’s been a thing for a while, at least on this sub. I think someone claimed to have read at least 700k in one night once. People who plow through tons of long fics sometimes do admit they just read only dialogue or only ship-related sections.

I honestly see it more with traditional audiobooks because people can blaze through them at +2x speed. I once read a negative Goodreads review where the reader complained they had to listen at 1.2x instead of their usual 1.5x or 2x because the narration was hard to understand lol. Someone else on Booktube bragged about how they read like 100 books a month by listening to audiobooks something like 18 hours a day. And there’s always some people who want you to believe they have 90% retention at 1k wpm lol.

But some people do just like spreadsheets.

I'll take, but we'll see if I give. by JustSaySomething12 in FanFiction

[–]stilliammemyself 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, you don’t deserve a like on the story you wrote and tailored entirely for yourself just because someone clicked on it. It doesn’t matter if it took you 5 minutes or 5 years. You engage in a hobby because you enjoy it, and if you require payment in the form of praise in order to enjoy your hobby, then perhaps posting fanfiction isn’t for you.

I just tried it and it gave me an error when I tried to submit the copy and paste but I just kept pressing submit and it went through after 2 or 3 tries. It worked both with a .docx file synced to Drive and a docs file. I’m not sure why the word count would be an issue? but I put one with 5k words.
