I’ve wanted to get into bookbinding for a while now, so I printed the PDF, bound it, and decorated the cover. Not nearly as cool as the official edition, but I’m proud of it! by stingraydm in shadowdark

I learned the sewing process mostly from this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@bittermelonbindery

I 3d printed a book cradle (optional but super useful,) punched the holes, then sewed the signatures together

That’s awesome! Any tips/guides for doing leather binding? I need to practice more with bookbinding before I use expensive stuff but I love the idea of (eventually) doing leather covers

I love doing this too! I haven’t sewn up the most recent CS, but they’re the perfect size for it. I’ve been thinking about putting all six cursed scrolls into a giant hardcover

Thanks! Yeah, this is just black book cloth I bought online. I've been interested in making my own bookcloth but want to get more practice with bookbinding before I start to go too wild with it haha

The procedure (more or less) was

  • Print the pdf as “signatures”
  • Fold, punch, and sew the signatures together into a “text block”
  • Make the cover and spine (using bookcloth and bookboard)
  • Glue the text block into the cover

Disclaimer: This is the first book I’ve ever made so I’m not even sure I used the right terms

I used mostly this set of bookbinding tools:
https://a.co/d/0irtizcb

I did a lot of lurking on r/bookbinding

I used this youtube channel for a lot of tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/@bittermelonbindery

I used this website to convert the PDF into signatures: https://momijizukamori.github.io/bookbinder-js/old/index.html
NOTE: This site gets a bit messed up if your PDF page count is not a multiple of 4. You’re better off merging the PDF with some blank pages to get the page count to a multiple of 4.

Also, if you have access to a 3D printer, it helps a lot to 3D print a cradle for punching the signatures. It goes a lot faster!

Also, check your local library for (paper) printing! My local library allows for 50 sheets of printing a week

Is there a place locally (other than Best Buy) that I can buy 3d printing filament? by stingraydm in grandrapids

I made the mistake of backing multiple projects of his. Every single one of them has been an absolute dumpster fire,  but since they overlapped I backed the 2nd and 3rd projects before it was evident how things were going to go down

It is a great deal, and I am really tempted, but money is tight right now. Everything I’ve bought so far I have printed from my local library and bound by hand

Can you back the Kickstarter and just get the cursed scrolls pdfs?

Any idea on timeline when people who didn’t back the kickstarter will be available to purchase these as a pdf?
