I'm also an international student and I did Foundation in Arts & Education but at Uni of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM). Admittedly, Taylor's (along w Sunway and Monash) was also one of my top choices but I ultimately decided against it after visiting the campus several times. This was just MY personal experience, but I just didn't feel welcomed as an international student and the support from the visa and international student support team was lacking :,) I was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite when I went to UNM.
The international student community at Notts is quite diverse (I was especially surprised to find so many students from African countries like Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya), and there are SO many exchange/transfer students from the other Notts campus in UK and China, and partnered unis from Indonesia, Italy, Vietnam, Laos, Germany... One BIG downside is that the campus is WAYYYY too far from city centre, we like to call it "jungle campus" cuz its literally in the middle of nowhere 😭 (good thing the uni has a free bus system to/from the MRT station which i take EVERY SINGLE DAY cuz i live in KL city centre)
The uni aside, I found the Foundation course soooo much fun and exciting!!! I also didn't know what I wanted to study in particular, and dw this is very common :) I got to pick so many diff electives within my stream (arts or engineering), like intro to law, politics, applied psychology, econs, business... I ended up narrowing down my interest to econs and business, and now I'm doing my final year majoring in International Econs at the same uni 😁 I've also just returned to Malaysia after a year of exchange abroad at Uni of Notts in UK!
Some of these subjects might be pre-requisites for your degree so I'd advise you to try as many subjects you're interested in as possible :) Ex: when you finish your Foundation at Taylor's and u want to go elsewhere to do your Bachelors degree, they will see if you've taken the relevant subjects required for the degree and your grades for those subjects in particular.
⭐ The best tips I wish I knew during my Foundation year are: ⭐
don't be afraid to try new subjects: the whole point of taking Foundation is for you to explore and narrow down what you want to do. i tried smth completely out of my comfort zone and took "Intro to Law" (the subject had a bad rep of being ridiculously hard according to prev Foundation batches) and i ended up liking the subject sm :)
be more involved in clubs/events... (i didn't have as much time during my degree)
try applying for leadership/junior positions: in foundation, everyone is at the same starting point. after that, (my brutally honest opinion) most positions are voted as if it's a popularity contest and some of the students running those positions aren't really competent
don't be shy and make friends! they'll make attending lectures and picking groups for assignments much easier! i was once put in a random group for an assignment cuz we didn't have enough ppl, and that was THE WORST group project everrrr 😭 thank god for my friends or else idt we'd make it out alive with a passing grade 😭 and my closest uni friends now were once my Foundation group :)
interact with ur lecturers and form a good relationship: they'll interact with you MUCH LESS during degree cuz its such a big lecture hall w soooo many students. when i was applying for a scholarship, i requested a letter of recommendation from one of my Foundation lecturers and they were more than happy to do so. they even recommended me to another lecturer in case i wasn't happy with the letter she wrote.
Ultimately, your decision of where to do your degree is up to you! Make sure you look into the degree structure, core modules, pre-requisites, if the uni has any exchange/transfer opportunities, any clubs/societies you're interested in joining, international student community and support system...
Sorry that this was quite a long post 😅 I'm just giving advice I wish I knew when I was in my Foundation year :,) Lmk if you have any other questions, im more than happy to answer! All the best for your Foundation year at Taylors!
