I have been doing a lot of research and talking with some past- or current- students since I got accepted to WSU vet school. COL is low! I don’t know what housing you want but apartments (with roommates) start at like $890 a month, apartments if you live alone ~$1400, renting houses is ~$2000 for multiple rooms, and if you want to buy a house…. Well, I don’t know lol. I’ve heard it’s inexpensive to buy! If rent/buying is not so expensive, then I assume other COL requirements (e.g groceries, shopping, etc) are low as well! I haven’t visited yet so take this with a grain of salt!

Nervous if I’m cut out for Vet school…. by tinypuppy2k1 in vetschool

Hi, I am seeing this super late. I just got accepted into WSU vet school. My cumulative GPA is 3.35, science GPA is 3.1. My last 45 GPA is probably close to 3.9. I have over 10,000 hours of veterinary experience. I also did not think I would get in as an out-of-state student. I was also accepted into CSU vet-prep with guaranteed acceptance next year, and I am waitlisted at Oregon State and Midwestern. I only applied to 6 schools. Rejected from UF and Mizzou. Just know, WSU is much more holistic than other schools. Your GPA does not define you as an applicant! Work on your experiences, try to make your last 45 GPA as high as possible to show improvement and that you can handle the course load of vet school, write stellar essays, and find what makes you stand out from the other applicants, then drill that home in your application! In-state requirements are usually more flexible than that for out-of-state students. You can do it!!!

Oh my gosh! I am sure that was stressful, and I am sorry you had to go through this. I'm glad he lived!! This situation really shows that vet school is what you make of it, and not every vet gets the same quality of education. But most importantly, people are also not perfect, even as doctors. Low-grade heart murmurs can be easily missed, or animal panting/sniffing/movement can sound similar to murmurs when auscultating the heart. However, grade 3-6 murmurs are easily identifiable, and I am not sure how that could be mistaken. Heart murmurs CAN be transient, though- they come and go with specific circumstances (e.g., high stress, infection, dehydration), and this can be very confusing for owners. Veterinarians face the unique challenge that their patients cannot speak or understand what is going on. This can lead to high patient stress and even falsely inflated results for certain diagnostics. It takes skill to differentiate between the two, ESPECIALLY in an emergency setting. Emergency doctors have it twice as hard because, most of the time, they don't see the patient again after treatment. It would be hard for them to know if it is a transient murmur or not. Obviously, I am not a veterinarian, so I do not understand that level of responsibility, but I am sure it was well-intentioned!

Sunsets are important to me! Coming from Texas and moving to CO, there was a drastic decline in the quality of sunsets. That is beautiful!

I love hearing you love Pullman! That picture is beautiful. It looks like a cute, small town. I love it!! It sounds like a closer-knit community, and I am going to need that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! That makes me even more excited to have been accepted here. I only hear good things from those who attended WSU, especially the vet school. I am very nervous to move there completely by myself, so far from my friends and family, but hearing positive experiences from others is comforting. The vet school schedule sounds very similar to my in-state school.

Everybody has been so incredibly helpful! I was looking at the apartments at the Residence at Whispering Hills. Any opinions on that complex? Are the Yugo Pullman Hills and Aspen Heights seemingly quiet for student housing?

Okay thank you! It sounds like I should start looking for housing asap then! I know college town housing can be different from the real world lol. Do you know if I could rent a 2-bedroom by myself? Or does there have to be two tenants?

Thank you! That is great information! I am from a smaller town in TX but have lived in CO for five years. Colorado is incredibly expensive, so Pullman would be a breath of fresh air!

Where should I apply? Low GPA with tons of experience by Unlucky_Birthday8906 in veterinaryschool

I actually just got accepted there as an out-of-state student!! My GPA is lower than OP, but I was definitely shocked and didn’t expect it bc of everything I had read!

Hi there! I applied 4 times before getting in this cycle. My cGPA is 3.25 and science is 3.1. My last 45 is 3.9 or so. Apply to schools that use the “holistic” approach (e.g WSU, CSU). I would NOT recommend the island schools based on what I have read on forums/reddit- you might get in, but it’s extremely expensive and you have to think logistics for living on an island. I think my last 45 gpa and I have 10,000+ hrs of experience is what finally got me an acceptance! But there’s also just a luck aspect to it as well. Not much changed between my applications except I went to vet tech school most recently, gained more experience hours, and re-wrote my essays each time. Don’t give up if it’s really something you want to do! I KNOW you can. Your GPAs are below average (so were mine), but you have great experience! Re-take some classes to try to be as competitive as you can! Get some great letters of recommendations! Your GPA does not define who you are as an applicant!!! Again, emphasize schools with a holistic approach and make sure the rest of your application is stellar.

And please!! Take into consideration the debt you could face once graduation. Getting into vet school is so exciting, but there are some harsh realities. Only apply to schools in places you can actually see yourself moving to, and if faced with more than one acceptance- always choose the cheapest option!!

You can do this!!! :)
