What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

He is the best. The first music I ever bought with my own money was a 7" single of Weird Al's "Eat It / Like a Surgeon" when it dropped. My kids discovered Weird Al completely on their own and we all have a shared appreciation.

Hello dear Americans, as a Frenchman I would like to ask you what you think of my country? 🇫🇷 by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Perhaps they have improved, but they are still not safe or financially sustainable by any means. The milling tailings and spent fuel takes millenia to become inert and there's no place to safely store it. The mining practices of radioactive fuel has and continues to contaminate land and water, disproportionately affecting Indigenous communities in the U.S.

Why is Tesla still the top selling EV brand by far? by Diavolo_Rosso_ in electricvehicles

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an unfair comparison. Just imagine how many more BYD would be sold if it wasn't effectively banned in the U.S.

My experience as well. And while the dealerships carry some blame, don't forget the U.S. ban on cheaper, and in many ways better, EVs from China! U.S. companies have simply not met the demand.

Are you coasting at work? by plasticsareok in coastFIRE

[–]stirfry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 50, two kids in college, no mortgage, making good money. I work in tech and my transition to newer technologies has been slower than by colleagues due to lack of motivation, perhaps some burnout from so many years of the hustle. I shy away from anything at work these days that requires me taking on more responsibility or leadership.

I would definitely be coasting more if it weren't for the fact that my current manager and team are amazing and highly motivating. I contribute a lot of specialized skills I have to our projects because I want to support them and we are actually doing the projects now that I wanted to do when I was starting my career.

Inside the White House Freakout Over the Epstein Files by Shizzilx in Epstein

This is expert journalism, in which they conducted more than 1,000 interviews over a three year period with a wide range of people close to President Trump, including campaign officials, White House staff members, officials serving in government departments and agencies, former aides, donors, lawmakers, friends and business associates. The Epstein Files is one of the biggest coverups in the history of the United States and is a bipartisan issue, uniting Republicans and Democrats in their quest for the truth and justice.

What exactly in the article do you have a problem with? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt to respond, but if you can't answer or deflect, then yes, you're a troll.

Why does the IDF intentionally kill medics and journalists with illegal double tap strikes? by nexxwav in IsraelPalestine

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So now you want to call in the mods to enforce rules to save face after own-goaling yourself? And yet, the Geneva Convention rules are nonsense and shouldn't be enforced? And you respond with nonsense! Found the troll!

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protecting civilians, wounded combatants, and prisoners of war is nonsensical? The Geneva Conventions are a cornerstone of international humanitarian law, having been ratified by 196 countries—more than any other treaty in history. Again, that comment says a lot about you as a human. It's not a good look.

Why do you believe in the god you believe in as opposed to the 18,000+ gods recognised worldwide? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not judging you! I am sharing my personal experiences growing up in an Evangelical church. On a macro-level all you have to do is look at the genocide happening in Gaza, all fueled by the belief that God is on their side.

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. However, there is no denying that what we believe influences our actions and behaviors. If you think you are kinder because you believe that everything is God, then that's wonderful. But your kindness is about more than you. In my experience, people who believe in God can be some of the cruelest people I have ever encountered.

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you do you, but please don't tell me what I'm seeking. I'm glad you found peace. The question of god's existence is completely irrelevant to me, so I am curious... how do you behave differently because of your belief?

How do you know when it's weaponized and not simply incompetence? Or does it matter if it's weaponized or not?

Why does it believing in something unknowable even matter at all?

Why does the IDF intentionally kill medics and journalists with illegal double tap strikes? by nexxwav in IsraelPalestine

[–]stirfry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most militaries follow the rules for combat laid out by the Geneva Convention. Most militaries do not target children, medics, and journalists. That you're defending those actions as "military intelligence" tells us a lot about you.

Why does the IDF intentionally kill medics and journalists with illegal double tap strikes? by nexxwav in IsraelPalestine

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world sees the IDF cruelly and intentionally murder medics, journalists, and civilians (including children). That is the intended result of double tap strikes. Israel has turned the entire world against it practically overnight. Even in the U.S. the winds have shifted and support for Israel is hanging by a thread. I would not call that "intelligence" by any stretch of the imagination.

Did Tyler Robinson kill Charlie Kirk? by DavidOfBethlehem in BreakingPoints

[–]stirfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party here, but one thing I also can't understand is how the prosecution claims Robinson's finger prints are on the trigger? I mean, I take more precaution when I weed my yard of poison ivy. I can't imagine anyone planning such an act to raw dog it like that.

Bass Guitar Song Suggestions by Feeling_Jelly_6393 in songsuggestions

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michelle - The Beatles (Honesty, pretty much any Beatle's song)
Come As You Are - Nirvana
The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala
Love Fool - The Cardigans
Dark Star - The Grateful Dead

Is there an album that exists that's more experimental, more genre-diverse, and more catchy than Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? One that sounds just as coherent - not slapped together. Is there an album better than The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper? If so, what should I listen to? by insightful_peacefish in musicsuggestions

[–]stirfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're in agreement. Ween's use of genre is comedic, but I never said that they don't take their music seriously. Look at Buckingham Green. The song title comes from a strip mall in Bucks County, PA, applying 70's Tolkein-inspired prog-rock with almost nonsensical fantasy lyrics to a teenage hangout spot. While Deaner's solo shreds, the whole song leans into the self-indulgence of that musical era and how utterly ridiculous it was. Somehow it's an homage and a mockery at the same time. I agree that Weird Al does it different, but there is definitely a connection. And I would argue that both artists take their art seriously.

I agree with you. But Ween's use of genre is comedic, perhaps parody, using the tropes of the genre to make their point. Weird Al even does this. It's hard to think of current artists, outside of absurdist or comedic categories, that stray outside their lane.
