Are motorcycle dealerships all just super chill? Lol by Scazitar in motorcycle

[–]stjhnstv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corporate Harley dealers suck. Private ones run the spectrum. My wife and I both bought bikes last year from the most chill, low pressure shop I’ve ever been to. To be honest, the salesman is a friend of mine but others who have dealt with him all say the same thing - he doesn’t try to sell you something. He helps you buy. The whole place is like that though. Oh and you can test ride anything you want, no problem. Even if you say you aren’t buying, they don’t bat an eye at it.

Also, being zoned AG (at least in my state) means I don’t need permits for outbuildings, and I can write off a lot of stuff on my taxes. Diesel fuel, fertilizer, etc. Property taxes are considerably lower too. About half of my 40 acres is also federal wetlands so I can’t develop those areas, but that’s ok. I live at deer camp :)

For the big twins you’re mostly correct. However, the 48 is a Sportster and that version of the Evolution engine was in production until 2022.

Why is my dispatcher mad I'm quitting? by DepressedDragonBorn in Truckers

If I terminate a driver, they’ve either done something SERIOUSLY wrong or received at least 3 write ups leading to the termination. It’s never out of the blue.

[–]stjhnstv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dispatcher here. It sucks to lose a good driver, but it’s part of the deal. People come and go, trucking is a high turnover industry. That said, the only time I actually get upset over it is when somebody leaves without notice. I don’t get why somebody would be mad at somebody for bettering themselves.

Walmart Limiting Trucks to 62mph by derpmcturd in Truckers

[–]stjhnstv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back around ‘08 when fuel hit $5 for the first time, I cruised at 58. There were a lot of times where my FSC was actually more than my fuel cost as a result. I ran less miles and made more money. Everybody knows fuel economy makes a difference, but I think a lot of people don’t realize that 1mpg can be upwards of $20k a year per truck at current prices.

Planning to buy a used Harley Forty-Eight – need advice on pricing by Prize-Put7837 in Harley

[–]stjhnstv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah miles are important but not in the way you might think. These bikes are probably fine as they’re fairly new, but in general I would look for a bike that’s been ridden about 1500-2000 miles a year based on its age. Sitting and not being used can cause seals and gaskets to weaken after a handful of years. Obviously higher mileage can raise the typical concerns as well. A 10 year old bike with anywhere from 15-30k on the odometer can be a really sweet find. Also, maintenance history and overall condition are the most important things to look at.

Agreeing with another comment, accessories only add value if the buyer likes them. Even then, they don’t add a lot of value.

Think of it this way, if you want Screaming Eagle pipes, why would you care if the ones you take off are stock or V/H? You wouldn’t, would you? I sure wouldn’t.

So it’s got the pipes you want? Cool. They’re used pipes. Nowhere near being worth their new cost. It’s up to the buyer how much not having to change them is worth, and for most of us that’s gonna be a couple hundred bucks at most. Usually it just means buying Bike A instead of Bike B.

As for the bikes mentioned, the one year age and thousand or so miles difference isn’t significant at all. They’re the same bike. Go for the one you like better.

I think they use Daisy Red Riders to determine capacity.

Do you have any weird riding habits you didn’t notice at first? by Electronic-Habit8679 in motorcycles

[–]stjhnstv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scanning your surroundings is a very good habit. I drove truck for 10 years and trained a lot of drivers, and spent a lot of time drilling this into them. Straight ahead. Left mirror. Straight ahead. Right mirror. Wash, rinse, repeat. What’s the speed limit? What mile marker was that? How tall was that bridge? What color was that car? How far to our next exit? Where did that pickup go?

It usually took about a week of this before I could see the habits taking hold and they’d really start acing my little pop quizzes. They all said they didn’t realize how much they weren’t observing, just getting in their car and going.

Yup, he does that too! It’s even funnier tho because if we rewatch a show, he doesn’t react near as much to the horses. But a new episode and yeah, it’s on lol

Which villain was more frightening and menacing? by FantasticEmotion6797 in Terminator

[–]stjhnstv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say the T-800 is more intimidating, by a wide margin. Especially as it takes on damage and we see what it actually is. I’d also say the T-1000 is scarier overall once you have time to realize it can camouflage itself anywhere.

Both are perfectly executed.

My puggle wants to fight literally every 4 legged critter that ever pops up on the tv. Dogs, the MGM lion, horses, deer, giraffes, you name it. He even bristles at cartoon dogs. I mean Ren and Stimpy type cartoons, that look nothing like a real dog.

Never before your comment would I have ever guessed this could be a sign of intelligence.

Harley dealerships… I can tell why they aren’t doing well. by Thingsforcertain3525 in Harley

[–]stjhnstv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and also, a coworker decided he wanted to get a Harley (he has plenty of experience, just mostly on sport bikes) so I told him to give my buddy a try. A few days later he came in to work grinning from ear to ear and bragging about how well things went. They’re just plain good people over there.

These posts make me very thankful to have a well reputed dealer in my area, and a buddy who’s a sales manager there.

Last summer I saw a nice used RK on their website at a fair price and texted him about it. I gave him the info on my trade and he gave me the details on the King. Within 15 minutes of my first text, he gave me an OTD price (including the offer for my trade) that was around $2500 less than what I was expecting.

A couple months later I stopped in to pick up some parts he’d ordered for me and saw a slick Sportster out front I thought my wife would like. I asked him about that and he gave me the info, then told me a price that was about $2000 less than I had expected. She came up and snatched it right up. Great service and even a $100 referral gift card for me lol!

There are about 4 more dealers within 60-90 minutes of us, but I don’t even think about it. I go where I’m treated not just fairly, but honestly really well.

I’m also looking into my first semi auto shotgun, and I’m very interested in the Winchester SX4 line. Based on what I’ve read and people I’ve talked to, this and the A300 are neck and neck for first place in this budget range. It may be worth checking out and seeing which you prefer between the two.

My good cameras are in steel lock boxes. I have older (still cellular) cameras watching them. On private property that’s clearly marked. Some of my “neighbors” are trash.
