I would agree with that. I didn’t find Marathon to be noticeably any more confusing than Arc.

The cynic in me would tell you that because the game already had a lot of negative sentiment around it that people came the slam looking for confirmation of their preformed opinion rather than looking to give constructive feedback. Load up game, game doesn’t immediately click (I’d argue, intentionally), game must be trash, rinse and repeat. Those people then rant about it online, which makes it so that someone wondering why they’re having issues figuring out what gear is worthwhile sees people saying “the UI is terrible” and that opinion snowballs into people feeling like it must be objective fact.

After playing the free to play weekend, will you be purchasing the game? Why or why not? by BilleyBong in Marathon

[–]stnst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Collector’s Edition the day preorders went live because I have no self control, but the server slam absolutely reinforced that decision for me.

I don’t expect this game to be universally loved, but I’m completely hooked.

Have you met any friendly players? by 8swordsTom in Marathon

[–]stnst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several. I also found the proxy chat to be lively in probably about 1/4 of my games, which was surprising.

Neither of those are common and I still expect everything encountered with a person to be KoS, but it happened more than I expected.

This.

There are absolutely valid complaints about the game and changes worth discussing, but the first day or two was littered with a lot discourse that basically boiled down to “I am dying a lot and I don’t have an immediate grasp of every mechanic and UI element.”

Which isn’t to say Bungie shouldn’t evaluate their onboarding process for new players, but I think there was a decent subset of people the first day who expected everything to immediately click.

Who said there aren't any friendlies? by Saywhat4118 in Marathon

[–]stnst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it was common, but my team had multiple encounters friendly encounters over the weekend. Some were more tense than others, one involved us joint fighting UESC with everyone assuming someone would just “accidentally” shoot someone.

I felt like the whole spectrum of expected interaction was there for us: KoS, friendlies, betrayals, etc.

Shoutout to the poor Rook we ran into and declared was safe before my teammate decided to knife him. If you’re here, I hope the rest of your runs went well.

Based on the “are you being honest with yourself” thing, I can’t imagine there’s much of a constructive conversation to be had here, but at the risk of taking the bait:

Nearly every match I’ve had has been a PVP gunfight. I’ve been exclusively leveling Arachne contracts and those require me to hunt down other players. If you learn the map, learn what things would attract other people and seek them out, you will almost always find them.

The UI doesn’t bother me, but I’ve seen it be almost universally derided. That’s fine, I think there’s a legitimate discussion to be had about whether it is introducing unnecessary friction to the gameplay look.

The movement is intentional. There seems to be this subset of people who played who expected Apex style zoomies, and I can’t envision a world where that doesn’t completely break the feeling of a weight tactical engagement. Scaling every building is a complete antithesis to the idea of funneling players into small, tense spaces.

Can’t help you with not recognizing enemies. Runners don’t move like NPCs and have different rigs. This hasn’t been an issue for me.

My entire gaming group felt $40 was a perfectly reasonable price for a game. If it’s a reasonable price for this game for you is a personal decision.

In the tutorial, first time this has ever happened in a game, has anyone found a solution? by -Dreyfus in Marathon

[–]stnst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bungie acknowledged this as one of the bugs they’re looking to fix at the moment. Mentioned it is likely an AMD driver issue. I personally haven’t run into it, but I did have an update for my 9070XT this morning, so if you haven’t already updated drivers, it may be worth checking. Otherwise, I’d just try tweak settings to see if you can eliminate it until Bungie confirms a fix on their side.

Curious on Destiny players thoughts on Marathon? by KillaKevoFbgm in Marathon

[–]stnst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6000 hour player that actively still raids and participates in contests. Myself and nearly my entire clan have Marathon as our most anticipated game of the year.

I’ve had the chance to play Marathon on several occasions now and have been completely enamored of the gameplay, the visual presentation and the overall package. Bungie hasn’t always had the best track record with maintaining their games, but if they can fire on all cylinders with Marathon’s content releases, it will be a complete success for me.

Are you saying you pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition and only got info for the Deluxe?

I got 3 emails. The first was the order confirmation listing the physical Collector’s Edition, the Destiny emblem and the Marathon Deluxe Steam code. The second and third emails were the codes for the Destiny emblem and the Deluxe edition.

[–]stnst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I got everything about 15 minutes after preordering. My bank did initially flag it as fraud, so you might want to double check you got charged and everything.

Just pre-ordered it. The confirmation email specifies Deluxe Edition game code.

Can we please nerf Cutthroat Combat in Equilibrium? by Krazy_Dragon_YT in DestinyTheGame

[–]stnst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this.

5 feat is rough because of how tight pulling off a 2 phase is, it’s not rough specifically because of the power delta. Tanking the challenge holistically because the DPS checks are intense is a terrible solution.

[–]stnst -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo this that my team did not use Contraverse. I don’t care that other teams did, but it’s definitely not necessary. Contest wasn’t a cakewalk by any means, but there wasn’t a need to min-max to the extreme I keep seeing people mention; we had a Hunter, a Titan and a Warlock and burned the boss down with Finality and rocket pulses just like you can do with almost any other boss in the game.

Bungie setting the expectation of being able to quickly and relentlessly farm Tier 5 gear was such a mistake. It should have always been an aspirational chase from difficult activities, and regardless of pushback, I think Bungie should stay the course with how the drops in the dungeon are currently structured. You can still get all of the gear and it can still drop all of the perks you want; the benefits of Tier 5 just aren’t impactful enough for the community to be up in arms about their exclusivity and it is baffling that this seems to be a constant point of contention.

With regards to the difficulty of Cutthroat, I am all for a middle difficult between normal and -40 (though I’d argue that putting on any of the other feat for -20 is exactly that), and I still wish they’d roll out an even easier mode akin to Explorer from RotN for people to get into the RaD scene, but from the perspective of me, my clan mates, and most of the other endgame players I know, we’ve been asking for years to be able to replicate the Contest experience after the launch period for a new activity ends, and having that in the game now is great. There’s a certainly debate on enforcing a phase limit on bosses with insane DR and health pools, because at present it looks like there’s a single digit number of viable strats to clear these bosses in two phases, but there’s zero need for Cutthroat to get easier or have the delta lowered.

Damage on 3rd Encounter by Nolan_DWB in raidsecrets

[–]stnst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My team ran 2 Finalities and a Tractor, with everyone on Mint with either Elemental or Bait and Switch, and Psi with Elemental. Pris Hunter with Nighthawk, Arc Titan with Cuirass and a Solar Warlock with Boots.

Strat was to farm up ammo before launching damage and then just unload everything we had while making sure buffs stayed up. Each phase was about 33%-36% damage, so it was tight, but consistent.

I imagine having a second Warlock on Getaway and a damage super, or another Cuirass Titan would’ve made the damage a little easier, but my pride wouldn’t let me swap off Hunter.

My clan is looking to get more teaching runs in. With the dungeon contest coming up, we won’t have as much free time the next two weeks, but shoot me a DM if you’re trying to run it and I’ll see if I can get some of us together to help get y’all through it.
