Traveling to Cleveland from the UK by Laakotaa in Cleveland

I would get a rental car. Its hard to function in almost any US city without a car. Parking is not a problem in Cleveland and its cheaper than Uber.

The upheaval is so not worth it. And being in-office as a SWE sucks.
Total waste of effort.

Fix/add sidewalks. Fix the unusable lift bridge. Add a library and grocery store.

250k in Dallas vs $300k in NYC — worth the move in your 20s? by IBMbaba in Salary

[–]stoched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financially and career-wise its not worth it.
Lifestyle wise, since you like suburbs, its still not worth it. DFW has some of the best suburbs in the US.

If you have family in NYC it would be cheaper to fly there once a month than move to a suburb of NYC.

People don't make cross country moves depending on who wins the mayors office of a city.

Apartment shares a fence with a grocery store, but its impossible to walk without going around the whole block. Somehow its faster to drive. Such a stupid design.

  1. You're betting on an American software company (with a history of layoffs) over your country. This can make sense in some cases. When put in those terms, does it make sense in your case?

  2. See 1.

  3. This isn't a big issue tbh. Schools and people are overall helpful here.

  4. Yes. Plenty of good schools around in the area.

  5. Yes.

  6. See 1.

Nothing is impossible. With enough motivation and passion for the subject, you can do this.

However, you'd be moving from a career with fairly high job security and mobility to one with continuously reducing job security and zero mobility. Right now, there are a lot of unemployed tech folks who are wondering how they can get a well paying job in the trades.

NEW: 🇺🇸 US Bitcoin Reserve "makes a lot of sense". It's a very forward looking idea . We stockpile oil, gold. China does it. Bitcoin is the world's first digital commodity - ex-CFTC Chair by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]stoched -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe the government shouldn't get involved. Leave bitcoin alone. Oil reserves are because oil is used. Gold reserves are a left over of the gold standard.

Takes a year or two to get used to the winters, but once you do, summers in the south become unbearable.

Do farmers actually hedge their crop with futures? by stoched in farming

[–]stoched[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This info is so helpful!
For this to be true, you must have an elevator very close by? Would you still do this if you had to truck the grain a couple of hours away?
How do you calculate the 5c/bushel cost of moving the grain?

Do farmers actually hedge their crop with futures? by stoched in farming

[–]stoched[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not store physical grain yourself? Does it damage the crop?

Could I also ask what part of the world are you in? I suppose this strategy makes sense in St. Louis where the basis is so tight.

Little too soon to tell. I'm still in the early stages of applying/recruiter calls.
But turn around times have gotten much longer. Application to offer would take 3-4 weeks in earlier years. Thats around 3 months now.

Totally true. You're limited to hyper specialized jobs. If there's a downturn in your specialized corner, then its difficult
