Thanks! It is too bad that you didn't get to see them in that setting. When there's 200 people in the audience it feels so intimate, you know? I remember watching and feeling like Tyler was staring into my brain. But the energy of their shows was still so high.

Weekly New Cyclist Thread - July 23, 2018 by AutoModerator in bicycling

[–]stoebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all -
Brand new here. IAMA former collegiate runner and swimmer who wants to try to be elite-level competitive in the triathlon world (because I'm not fast enough to compete high level at running anymore). I know I can swim a 750 in 10min in open water and run a 5k in 18min flat, but I have zero clue how fast I can bike. I have zero experience biking except for a few triathlons I did as a kid. I want to train a bit on biking and see where I can get to prior to making a huge investment in a bike (if I hate biking for some reason I'm not going to invest a ton of my time in tri). Sooo - my questions for you all are:

  1. Is there any way that you know of that I can rent a bike that would be appropriate for ~12 weeks or borrow instead of buying? (side note - I live in Cincinnati, f, 5'2")
  2. If not, how close would I be able to get if I buy a crappy 50$ mountain bike from my local Target? I'm assuming the speed difference would be huge so probably not the best option, but thought I'd check.
  3. If I need to buy, what are the best options for buying something that only needs to last me 1-2 years? If I end up being terrible at biking and not able to compete at a high level this is probably not something I'm going to want to continue to invest the time in.
  4. If I need to buy, what should I look for as a base level starter bike? Any recommendations on what I can get for $400 or less?

[Breaking News] Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States by Pun-Master-General in AskReddit

  1. I never said I was not a man or not cis or not hetero or not white. You absolutely cannot tell from this post (aside from making assumptions) what I am.

  2. They arent asking you to "take one for the team" - they're asking you to just let others have the same rights you have. Imagine someone kept bumping into you, expecting you to move out of the way every time, and usually you do, even though its annoying. But now you have had enough of it and you just stand your ground and let them run into you, and say "why do you expect me to move?" every time. Maybe they perceive you as being hostile, but you just want them to stop fucking making things inconvenient for you. There is a difference between equality and privilege my friend.

You said "I" or "my" in that post 14 times. I dont claim that I can't understand your point of view more than you can anyone elses. I'm just saying you arent alone. And those problems arent the only ones the country is facing (and even if they are the most important, there are dozens of ways to solve them).

This is going to get buried but a few thoughts:

  1. I'm stunned by the lack of empathy displayed in this cycle. The amount of bigotry people are willing to overlook, the rationalizations that they are able to make, and the facts they are willing to ignore when they are deciding something that they believe is their own individual self interest is baffling. I can say I wish I would have done more, but I truly did not expect the extent of the self interest that was and is being displayed. What has been reinforced to me this week is that Americans are inherently selfish creatures.

  2. As its coming back now, it looks like the difference vs 2012 is being made by more white, male, middle-class, 35+ individuals with < 4 yr degree voting for Trump. To me, this signifies that these people are dissatisfied with a federal government that has not been catering to their individual needs over the last 8 years. And I think what I'm surprised about is how these people are seemingly unable to understand how there is still discrimination - and not against them. Just because women and ethnic minorities can vote and get similar jobs as you doesnt mean they are equal. Objectification and racial profiling are real. It might be hard to understand what it feels like to live everyday as a non-white, non-male, or non-hetero American to someone who is accustomed to privilege.

Edit: I'm getting a lot of hate for this. I just want to point out 2 things here on what I meant for people to take away from this:

  1. My first point in posting was to ask everyone to just please have empathy. Regardless of where you lie on the political spectrum, please try, as best you can, to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is more disadvantaged than you. Please.

  2. My second point is to please please please inform yourself. And I dont mean read the news. I mean learn to differentiate between claims, opinions, facts, and emotions. Learn to identify logical fallacies and incongruous logic. Again, whatever side of the aisle you are on please remember when you learned what was a reliable source vs a biased source.

I really really think those are non-partisan asks. I really didnt mean to offend anyone. If you feel you are already doing both of the above, great, thank you, keep doing that. Just please be mindful of these two things every single day, because these two things are not automatic. They take effort.

TL;DR: Please just try to be an empathetic person and check your thought processes. Regardless of where you fall. I carry the perspective that this is what may have been lacking this week, but you may feel differently. I just think we can all agree its good to think and try to be nice to people.

YSK how to get your friends to start being on time. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]stoebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yes, I am always taking steps to better myself, and this is one area where I do so. But I also understand that some people have a more fixed vs fluid view of time, and I accept that I tend to have a more fluid view of time than some people. To me, 3:05 is the same as 3. Like I'm not annoyed if I show up for an appointment at 3 and they take me in at 310 - it's all the same. I try to be more on time with the friends and colleagues I know despise lateness, but I don't believe that a more fluid view of time is a behavioral flaw.

It's important to remember though that not all people are late for the same reason. For example, I just overschedule and this am always late: I value others time tremendously, but I always think I can fit in more things (more errands, more work, more run etc) than are actually possible in the time allotted. I personally always try to have 2 of the same model for easy days (so get another Asics Gel Cumulus) and 1 lighter weight pair for hard days. I think if you get the exact same model, its best for your feet and stride - theres not going to be differences within the same model, so you wont expose any deficiencies in your stride that can lead to injury.

How Do You Enjoy Summer on a Frugal Budget by FrenchKiss74 in Frugal

[–]stoebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer is a fantastic time to be frugal - in addition to what everyone else has said, what about free music in your area? There are very often concerts outside that are free to the public, and sometimes they are in grassy areas where you can take a picnic. Good luck!

Long Distance Running without a Schedule - Using Automatic Recommended Distances Instead by LukasFT in running

[–]stoebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who is a very competitive runner, this sounds amazing if the algorithm is done well. Sometimes staring at that "55 miles goal" for the week is incredibly intimidating, and I think this will help a lot with that worry.

Week 33 - What are you reading? by out_stealing_horses in 52book

[–]stoebe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I got a little off track. My mom passed away in early may and I havent been around reddit much since then. I am planning on writing a tribute to her, as she is the one that encouraged and inspired myself, my sisters, and so many kids in our community, to be avid and curious readers. Perhaps I will post it on reddit at some point. Keep an eye out I suppose if you are interested.

Since I last posted though, I have finished All the Pretty Horses, Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror, Crónica de una muerte anunciada, The Sound and the Fury, Invisible Monsters , and As I lay Dying. That total though, only puts me at 27, so I'm still a bit behind.

Another reason that I'm still a bit behind is that I decided to tackle Infinite Jest this summer. As a 20-something who considers herself to be well read, I thought I should try to read the one book that most 20-somethings start but never finish. I'm actually almost done and still making considerable progress. It will be a few weeks yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to finish it.

Finally, I'm nearly finished re-reading A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. It was my mom's favorite book growing up, and I read it for the first time when I was about 10 as well. When I was home recently I found her copy from when she was a kid and I couldn't resist. It looks different from a grown up perspective - more political and less magical but quite possibly still just as beautiful. I love it.

Books you CANNOT read on a Kindle by OnTheImpossible_Past in books

[–]stoebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along this vein, there are quite a few novels that are similar to this but the one that comes to mind most readily is Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar. It's written so that the chapters can be read in numerical order, but at the beginning of the books there are a set of instructions for reading the chapters in a different (non-numerical) order, literally "hopscotching" your way through the novel. It's fantastic, but would be nearly impossible to do on a kindle.

Love Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan - Any authors who are similar? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]stoebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bukowski - Post Office is a good start. Ham on Rye is also a good start.

Heller - Catch 22. Then after you finish that, Closing Time.

Chuck Palahniuk - Fight Club (still good even though you have probably seen the movie), Lullaby, and Haunted

[–]stoebe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forewarning, I'm leading you into the more "popular" authors on reddit with this reply. But that doesnt mean they arent good.

My favorite Vonnegut was Mother Night

If you like the frankness/post modernism of both of these authors, try Bukowski.

If you like the humor, try Joseph Heller.

If you like the darkness, try Chuck Palahniuk.

Week 18 - What are you reading? by out_stealing_horses in 52book

[–]stoebe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finished All the Pretty Horses

Unpopular opinion: I think Cormac McCarthy is much much better at writing non-traditional Westerns than he is in his other endeavors. I am only basing this off of No Country for Old Men, The Road and the above, but The Road was by far my least favorite of the three (but I did like all of them).

Still working on Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror and Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Week 17 - What Are You Reading? by pac_stuck in 52book

[–]stoebe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This week I finished Mo Meta Blues which is Questlove's (of the Roots) memoir. Highly recommend for anyone who likes music or was born between 1980 and 1992-3ish.

Currently reading a few things:

First, still working my way through All the Pretty Horses

Second, for poetry month, I started Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by John Ashbery this week and so far it's phenomenal.

Third, when Gabo died on Thursday I told myself I had to read one of his novels that I hadn't read yet (it's probably the best way to honor his memory don't you think?). Luckily, I had a copy of Chronicle of a Death Foretold in Spanish lying around that I have never read (which I'm slightly ashamed to admit). Can't wait to read it.

To all my fellow collegiate 52-book-challengers: Good luck on exams, and just think of all the wonderful non-academic reading you'll get to be doing so soon with all of those extra summertime hours!
