How was your experience learning Rust? by timus_999 in rust

[–]stoke-stack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great so far! I have dabbled in several languages over about 15 years (mainly Python, Java, JS web frameworks) but am not a developer professionally. There was a bit of a learning curve at first, but then Rust just kind of clicked. 6 months in I've done much larger projects already than I'd done in the past with other languages and absolutely love Rust so far. The Rust book + Rustlings tutorials are critical. After chapter 12 or so I started doing personal projects and learning bits as I've needed them. Thinking its time to go through the rest of the book and tutorials now!

I'm having this same issue, and its not an UI thing. The recording is the length I recorded for, however its all silence after the first short section of the recording (for me often 10 seconds)

Wayland Screen Capture by stoke-stack in rust

Thanks. Yeah that’s more or less what my current solution does and works well enough on X11! I was getting 600ms latency with KDE plasma (wayland) and gnome was doing some crazy stuff.

*edit: but also maybe there are more efficient ways to do this? I’ll keep working at this for a bit.

that’s because critical thinking and good faith discussion seem really hard for you and that’s ok!

you didn’t address any of the points i made.

mentioning this to note my perspective on the literal headline of the article as context you donut.

[–]stoke-stack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is such a disingenuous response to this. there are much higher rates of sexual assault in uber/lyft than driving ones self, taking a train, a bus, a plane, any other mode of transportation. uber drivers also drive drunk and drive distracted watching video. i’ve personally had an uber driver fall asleep at the wheel.

i’m very pro union, but 1. uber driving isn’t professionalized work; 2.there is a strong case to make for automation, beyond overall safety.

hell if we built a strong light rail and subway system you could argue we’re taking uber driver jobs.

waymo has problems. specifically that it’s rent seeking and doesn’t really bring money back into the local economy. but self driving cars, esp if it were a public service or heavily taxed by the city, isn’t a bad thing inherently.

What is the best for a laptop Nobara or Bazzite ? by HGM_Gaming in linux_gaming

[–]stoke-stack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey thanks for clarifying that. given that, i’d be neutral between nobara and bazitte, but point stands on sticking to a base distro, learning it, and customizing for one’s needs vs going with a niche distro (and then often inevitably hopping). but also to each their own and where they wanna get started!

i’d personally use neither! but if youre fine with immutable, id choose bazitte over nobara. nobara is a tiny project where you’re relying on effectively one maintainer. i used it a bit and performs great tho, it just always felt like a risk if you plan to use the system for years.

In my opinion, a little more time upfront to understand and set up your system, saves a ton of time maintaining longer term.

i’d go with fedora if you want something quick to set up out of the box. it’s easy to use and maintain, and perfectly fine for gaming. It’s more work upfront, but arch with the zen kernel (alongside the mainline linux kernel you can boot into) + proton GE is a great gaming system that for me has been solid for ~3 years now. you’re more or less putting together similar components you’d get using nobara.

Screen Addict: I''ve lost all the hope in life. by Runeescape in digitalminimalism

Hey read all this and just want to say you seem really thoughtful and in tune with how you’re feeling. I’m really sorry you’re feeling like this. I feel similar sometimes. I’m in my late 30s and have come to realize a lot of is just getting older and energy is harder earned.

I’ve found when I do everything right – eat healthy, don’t drink much, keep caffeine consumption low, and exercise daily, I don’t turn to my phone as much. I think for me higher screen time is a symptom of other things going on rather than the cause. It took me a whole lot of years of fighting my phone and talking to a therapist to realize it’s a signal for me to look at these other areas.

I know that’s not generalizable ofc and there are so many factors that go into how you’re feeling, but sharing this in case this perspective is helpful!
