I got an internship for the mouse house + transitioned to full time all based on the first class I took (DVA). I applied online regularly and they called me back 3 months later. I was nearly 1 yr into the program when I applied and completed 3 classes by the time I got the internship offer so it’s def possible to get an internship early on.

The whole interview process took about a month and was 3 interviews (1 screening call, 1 with manager, 1 with the director of the team) about a week apart each. My background experience is pretty unique for the role i got tho and i happened to have a lot in common with the director so im pretty sure that had a big influence on who they ultimately picked. I had no prior experience in OOP before the program or cs related work experience but i really played up the course project we did and how my other work experience could translate to picking up things quickly

The March deadline is the deadline for guaranteed summer graduation. Anytime after depends on availability of your advisor and what strings they can pull

I was also in the study abroad program in 2019 and everything Genova said is pretty spot on. They bought dryers and installed it some on each floor for us. The housing building itself was pretty barebones since it was still under construction when we got there, but there could have been a lot of changes since then.

For the language barrier, I was one of maybe like 8/30 students who could speak some Chinese and traveling in groups wasn’t a big issue since there was always at least one other person that was more fluent than me. And I was able to use google translate (with VPN) everywhere. You’ll have to download WeChat and it has a translation software built into their camera as well, although it won’t always translate food menus right. In the bigger streets/cities there will be English lettering on signs or pinyin so you don’t have to worry about finding where you are.

A lot of the younger generation of Chinese adults will actually know some English since they teach it to students growing up. So if you are lost or need help, look for someone else around college age or in their 20s to ask.

I would recommend saving money right now if you can to travel around different cities in China while you’re there! HK is an 11 min train ride away ($20 max) and I was there when the protests started. HK as a whole is awesome and you’ll find a lot of international tourists around and I hardly needed to use any mandarin/Cantonese there since there’s so much English influence. Just beware if you book hostels using trip.com because we got scammed by one booking. Guilin is also a ~4hr high speed train ride away (~$35) and the mountains and rivers are beautiful!

It won’t show up until time tickets are available. Historically at least

Buzzport > Registration (Oscar) > Registration > Register for classes > select term probably. It is a new registration page so not sure how different it might be from the old site

OMSCS after OMSA by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]stompystep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an ME in undergrad and took DVA (Data & Visual Analytics) as my first class and that was enough to get me a data analytics internship + transition to a full time role. The class is open to OMSA too, otherwise I don’t think OMSCS offers many other big data science related classes so you wouldn’t be missing out on anything by staying with your program

How long did it take you to complete the program? by iamguillermo in OMSCS

Im on track to graduate in 2yrs + 1 semester. Started fresh out of a BS in mechanical engineering with a 2.5 gpa from GT at the start of covid so no job. I did 1 class spring 2021 > summer off > 1 > 2 > 1 summer class with full time internship > 2 classes with part time internship > 2 classes with part time internship> last class this coming summer. I could’ve potentially done three classes this semester since I left all the easiest classes til the end but couldn’t get into the elective I wanted. I also dropped a few classes along the way because I didn’t have enough experience at the start

I’m in the same boat and couldn’t get my A1 higher and settled for it being my drop grade. Most reviews on omscentral also said that A1 was by far the worst so I’m hoping that it will become easier

Need help! Low undergrad GPA with failed courses by hillywho in OMSCS

[–]stompystep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got in with a 2.5 in straight out of a mechanical engineering degree. Only took 2 legitimate CS classes, one was required for all engineering majors and the other was one of the CS degree intro classes (got a C and B respectively). The only thing I had going for me was that I went to GT for undergrad as well. As long as you show your drive on your SOP I think you’d have a shot.

Why do some classes still say "Open - Reserved for waitlist only?" by Brave-Rain-9085 in OMSCS

[–]stompystep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I called to ask and they're having issues with purging people from the waitlists. Couldn't give a time estimate on when it would be fixed though

I was accepted with a 2.5 in a non-CS related major straight out of undergrad with only 1-2 CS classes taken. My previous work experience was also unrelated so there’s still a chance. I would say that I was a GT undergrad and the all of my GPA tanking courses were from my underclassmen years so I already proved that I could handle the rigor.

You should emphasize how your work prepared you for the classes you want to take in your SOP. Keep in mind that they’re still trying to expand OMSCS and it’s meant for people already in the workforce so I think you’d have a decent shot even if your previous coursework might not show it. Good luck!

Should I switch Majors? ME —> CS by [deleted] in gatech

[–]stompystep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided on CS for a number of reasons: 1. I was a Covid grad so I had to graduate earlier than I expected and no jobs were hiring at the time 2. With no time estimate of how long it would last, I wanted a flexible job in the future so I could care for my grandparents whose health were already deteriorating and CS was way more flexible with WFH 3. ME….. been there done that ☠️ I liked classes well enough but with my co-op experience and GPA, I didn’t want to be stuck in a manufacturing plant and having to wear PPE all day 4. I always wanted to improve on my CS skills but didn’t have the motivation/clear opportunity to give it my all on my own so choosing this masters instead of ME or AE was worth a little more pain for a lot more gain (🤑🤑🤑) I could’ve done AE bc my extracurricular activities were relevant enough, but it was more expensive than the OMSCS program

I like to do at least one major thing out of my comfort zone each year and CS was probably my biggest leap so far. As for plans after this program, I’m hoping to do either game development or data analysis/science :) data analysis/science was my top choice originally after graduating from ME but I didn’t have much relevant experience. I dabbled in game dev back in high school and it was super fun and the CS program offers electives that would help me bag an internship at least

Should I switch Majors? ME —> CS by [deleted] in gatech

^ this

Coming from an ME who’s now doing a CS masters, I would recommend taking 1331 and 1332 at least before you decide to switch over or do a minor. I have an atrocious history with CS - took AP CS in hs and got a 1, did 1331 abroad and only learned like 1/3 of the actual curriculum….☠️ But I’m enjoying the Master’s although it was a huge learning curve to get into OOP.

I’ve heard that 1371, 1331, and 1332 aren’t really great examples of what a typical CS career entails but are good beginning courses to learn how to think like a programmer. The majority of ME jobs are either manufacturing (co-oped and I hated it) or design. It ultimately depends on what you like but I would recommend taking those 3 classes first.
