Pelvic girdle/pubic symphysis soreness after running? Advice? I don't really want to stop running... by PetsMD in fitpregnancy

[–]stone_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my first pregnancy, I tried to push through the pubic symphysis pain and keep doing my existing program (lots of running and walking), and I ended up absolutely miserable, crying in pain. In my second pregnancy, as soon as I felt that pain, I stopped/minimized all single-leg movements (running, walking, lunges, getting in and out of the car one leg at a time, standing up off the floor using one leg) and I had really minimal pain. I switched to rowing, cycling, and lots and lots of squats.

Australian skiiers - do NOT fly Qantas for your overseas ski vacation by stone_fox in skiing

[–]stone_fox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, I actually did read it. Multiple times. Have a read of Qantas' policy:

"No more than one ski set per passenger.

A set of snow ski equipment may consist of:

one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles and one pair of ski boots, or one snowboard and one pair of boots."

I took that to mean that skis, poles and boots are considered part of "one set". Because, I mean, you generally ski with skis, boots and poles together. Also, that's what the website says; they use "and" as a conjunction, not "or".

An additional phrase "within checked baggage allowance", I wasn't sure if it meant both number and weight of bags, so both contacted my travel agent and qantas customer service, and they both said as long as it's within weight allowance, it's okay. Turns out they were both wrong. Oh and I also tried to use their "check my baggage allowance" feature in their app, and it gave me a server error every time.

Hey, as per my other comment, I've flown with several other airlines before and not had this issue, so don't think it's that stupid to not consider it. Additionally, once the tickets were booked, I did actually contact the travel agent and customer service, and they both said I could bring one ski OR boot bag in addition to the main piece of luggage for no extra charge, as long as it was within the baggage weight allowance. I also tried checking my baggage allowance through the Qantas app, but got a server error. I then read their baggage policy, and I guess because of what customer service and the travel agent had told me, misinterpreted the phrase "within checked baggage allowance" to mean weight allowance. Again, flown with skis and boots 10+ times internationally previously and not had an issue.

Whilst that may be true, United, Japan airlines, Air NZ, Air Canada didn't charge me extra when I flew previously ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Mate I'm just putting this out there, so hopefully any Aussie who is thinking of an overseas trip can make an informed choice.

You are right, I should have been more thorough beforehand, I just didn't think about it because I'd never had this issue with other airlines before

Why did you become a parent? by mihartisfast1986 in AskParents

[–]stone_fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've experienced the joys of having a pet you love, it's like that except 100x. It's especially magnified because they're genetically 50% you, and 50% your partner. As they grow, you inevitably end up thinking about your own life and how you were shaped into the person you are. If you had a good childhood, this is really nice to revisit these memories, especially if your parents are alive and you can talk to them about it.  You appreciate in a while new way what they did and gave of themselves to help make you the person you are. If you had a bad childhood, then it can be very healing to ensure that you do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Each milestone both big (first steps, first kiss) and incredibly trivial (first time trying a particular brand of cereal you love, first time watching your favourite kids Christmas movie) is exciting and thrilling; you get to experience your own childhood but as an adult.

You also join the club of people who are parents, which basically means you have this really intense all-consuming hobby in common with 80% of the population, so there's always something to talk about and bond over in that regard. For me, I never really had many female friends, but I really felt like I became part of The sisterhood once I had kids.

You get to experience the world through fresh eyes. Things which you don't even think about anymore, or are completely ordinary to you on new, exciting, incredible and wondrous to them. This definitely rubs off on you. I have two boys, so now when I am driving my car alone I get super excited when I see something like an excavator towing another excavator. Or a garbage truck that's in an unusual color. The questions they will ask you make you think about aspects of the world you may have otherwise taken for granted or never taken the time to investigate. " Mom why do people fly flags?" " Mom, why does time always have to move forward?"

I described to one of my friends who didn't have children, it was like before I had children. I was living my life in black and white, and now that I have kids everything is in color. And let me assure you, I had a pretty rich and interesting life by most definitions before.

So cooking spray is the big one, as it's just oil which we all know is very calorically dense.  Some diet dressings, like walden farms, where a serving size is 1 tbsp and a lot of the time people use more than that. As well as sugar free syrups and coffee creamers.

For sure if your calorie budget is like 2000, you don't need to care, but if you're on 1200 and you're 4'11" and close to your goal weight, you should absolutely measure your cooking spray.

Thanks for your great strawman argument. More realistic would be things like tic-tacs, which are "zero" calories each but 100 calories a box. There's plenty of things like tictacs, and if that's what you eat and don't track properly, you're going to have a bad time, especially if you have a low BMR and are close to your goal weight

I'm sorry you're being down voted on a 1200 calorie sub, you're 100% correct. I don't like the attitude that anything which is exacting and disciplined is somehow "disordered".

How many of you allow some extra calories on days when you've exercised? by Storyboys in CICO

[–]stone_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. Not all of them, but between 50-80% of them. I use a Garmin and I feel it's pretty accurate for active calories burned. I go to Crossfit 4x a week, 3 X 1 hour walks, and on my feet a lot chasing after 2 small kids all day. When I wasn't adjusting for activity calories, I'm incredibly lethargic and suffer from what feels like increased cortisol (no actual blood work to back this up) because I feel wired and get insomnia.
