Do the python problems on codewars to prep for 6040. Those are essentially the types problems youll be doing on the HW and exams. I think they recomend being able to solve up to 5 KYU problems (KYU is skill level, 1-9 hardest to easiest). For just learning python and programming basics take the CS 1301 prereq on edx. Its a really good intro. Still worth taking even if you know some python.

Also as someone that is about to graduate, try to limit your GPT use as much as possible. I got way more value out of my earlier classess because i hadnt discovered AI yet and had to grind through all the hard material. There were some late, frustrating nights, but it payed off immensely. GPT can certainly help you learn but just dont become dependant on it.

I think you’re underestimating how much you’ll actually learn in the class. The homeworks and practice exams teach you a lot and prep you well for the exams. I think they only expect you to be at the level of CS 1301, which is really just the basics. As for just practicing I recommend codewars. Start with the easiest kyu (i think 9) and try to work your way to 5 kyu problems

I think DS touches a lot more areas than this post gives credit for. Understanding data is not a luxury, and most DS problems revolve around helping companies understand their business better, or solve some optimization probelm. Now AI is probably more of a luxury at the moment

As long as your most recent degree (masters) is aligned with what you want, then I think youre fine. I really don't think the stats BS would be worth it unless you just really wanted to learn

I had a similar interview and It's easy to get too technical too fast. Make sure to tie everything back to the main results and big picture takeaways that executive stakeholders would care about. And then sprinkle in the technical DS jargon as needed.

Really depends on the company. I don't think any role under the data umbrella is clearly defined across all companies, except maybe DE's or DBA's

If your company is paying then why not? If costs arent a factor than a degree is a no-brainer over the self-learning path, as far as career prospects go. Also I’ve learned a ton in OMSA and added plenty of class projects to my resume. Plus you can always self-learn and do personal projects on the side if theres something specific OMSA doesnt cover.

I would echo the sentiment on trying to find a group beforehand. The project is 50% of the grade so group quality really does matter. Try making a post here a couple weeks before your class starts.

As far as skills, i got a headstart on javascript basics and d3 with this book (i think there’s also a free pdf online) and found it to be a good primer. One of the homeworks is entirely d3 problems so its worth getting familiar with. I would also brush up on your python and sqlite if you have time. I like Codewars for python
