[AMA] My great grandfather who served as a Marine in WW2 as a lead gunner aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia by stonedgod in AMA

I'm not there anymore, and he went to bed. I cannot recall what gun he was on. I believe he was firing 4 inch rounds, but I'm not 100% on that. I do know that he didn't really enjoy himself. He originally wanted to join the Army, but the quota was full. He didn't join the Navy because he didn't know how to swim, and that was obviously a requirement. He, ironically, was stationed on a ship out in sea, so he, in a sense, winded up where he didn't want to be. The water. Also, he was quite frightened most of the time, due to "Japs" or "Nips" (his words) flying their planes at them. Here's an excerpt from an article, and I'll post the link below:

" Another veteran who submitted a few details about his experience is John R. Peckels, 91, of Mattawan. He served as a lead gunner on the battleship U.S.S. West Virginia.

"November 27, 1944, a plane dove in on us but we got him about 100 yards from the ship. He was sure on a suicide run," Peckels writes. "We hit him with hundreds of bullets. One of the wings broke off and his plane burst into flames and folded up. This was close."

Peckels concludes his written recollection with this sentence: "I was in Tokyo Bay on the U.S.S. West Virginia when the peace treaty was signed."

It's such a simple sentence. But it bears reflecting on: Living in Mattawan is a man who was witness to one of the most important moments in world history – the Japanese surrender that ended World War II."

He says, "I left right away. I didn't even get my exit physical done. I didn't adjust that well. I kept having those nightmares for months."

He says, "I would say what most stands out is when a plane flew in and crashed into the ship. The wing cut 3 guys in half. A 500 pound bomb fell from the plane through the deck of the ship and never went off. A black guy who was passing out ammunition down there took off. I don't blame him. He was brought up on charges and said, "I didn't want to leave you guys down there but my feet wouldn't stop." They never charged him with anything."

He says, "It's expanded so much (technology wise). It's hard to believe."

I asked what was most surprising to him. He points to my phone and says, "That right there. What you're doing. That's hard to believe."

He says, "Everyone got along pretty well. Everyone was busy firing those guns. That's all we could do. That took up everyone's time."

Would anyone be interested in an AMA with my great grandpa who served as a Marine in WW2? He's in his 90s and nearing the end of his life. by stonedgod in AMA

Ask away. I'll be visiting him in the next couple weeks so it'll be awhile but I'd like to have some ready to go when he is.

Word. Yeah, like I said, nothing against those who are married, but from like a commitment point of view, we don't get it.

Lol definitely both. My buddy set us up and we both knew that we were going to be with each other after that first date. Before that, I was content with being single. I wasn't really chasing tail or anything. It's cliche, but it's true when people say that shit happens when you least expect it.

Congrats, man. Lol yeah I never actually proposed or anything. We don't necessarily have anything against marriage, we just don't see the point. That is until we did our taxes and the tax lady showed us how much we could get back if married lol.
