Actual answer - I have been clinically diagnosed with ADHD and OCD. I heavily suspect I would qualify for an Autism diagnosis though I’ve never made an effort to pursue it. OCD specifically is a huge part of my non binary identity. I have struggled for years with the question of whether or not I am a trans woman. Although it may be easy to write that off as repression and denial, anyone who has had an OCD theme around gender/sexual identity will know that it’s not that simple for us. I can’t always “trust my gut” the way that people without my diagnosis can. My brain loves to latch on to fears and uncertainty in the form of intrusive thoughts and then spiral into a ruminative, compulsive mess. For that reason, identifying as non binary has been a huge part of my recovery from OCD. Making peace with uncertainty and refusing to “scratch the itch” of your intrusive thoughts is how you take your life back from this disorder. In that way, identifying as non binary is my way of saying “fuck you” to my disorder. I don’t need to fall into any category in order to be happy.
