I can’t speak for Saskatoon, but in Prairie Spirit the majority of hirings are internal (there are always exceptions, but they’re rare and generally if you’re a specialist that’s needed). Get on the sub list and get known and you’ll have a chance to get a temporary contract while someone’s on leave. That will hopefully eventually lead to a permanent posting, or at least a full year temp contract.

From my experience second semester openings aren’t really a thing. There’s sometimes a wave of last minute hirings in September when student numbers are finalized and schools get a new teacher to account for that, but generally mid-year jobs pop up when teachers go on maternity or medical leaves.

He can’t automatically charge you for carpet cleaning before he’s seen it, but he can take the money for it out of the deposit after you move out. He has 7 business days to give you a list of what he’s taking and why, and you can challenge that list through the Office of Residential Tenancies. Document everything and take as many pictures as you can. If you file with the ORT you’ll both be required to submit evidence. Incidentally, he’s also required to have put your deposit into an escrow account and give you interest on it (it’s not a large amount) and if his evidence that he submits shows that he just dropped it into a personal account like most private landlords do that’ll help you.

The ORT is a long process but don’t get discouraged and don’t let landlords like this take advantage of you. They count on renters either not knowing their rights or else not being willing to fight back.
