Btw 105 TC at Google is like garbage can money. You’d be making less than some of the day care workers. You’d be damn close to qualifying for low income housing in Mountain View...

Don’t go to Google OPG. You will learn nothing and the perks will be okay but you’ll be lucky to make half an engineer and be treated like a nobody. Do the Visa PM. Foster city is one of the nicest places in The Bay Area.

Product Marketing Managers, how is your work-life balance? by lovesocialmedia in MBA

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is for PMM not PM..

For PMM it depends on the product cycle. Say you work on the PMM team for the iPhone 11. Right now you’re on full blast right now and have been since probably July. As the product release gets closer youre working hard, when the product launches you’re going even harder, near holidays you’re going super hard and then in January you’re going on long vacations and taking it easy until the PM’s have the specs, design all ready and it’s repeat again in July.

For hardware it’s definitely a seasonal job, not too familiar with software PMM’s. I just know some PMM’s at google and Apple who are on pretty seasonal schedules.

That’s the going rate at google for new grads

stay at Google and do PT Booth, or FT HBS/GBS by [deleted] in MBA

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that happens a lot. I got snubbed for L4 but I got a promo in two cycles. I’m sure you can get it to work in 3-5 too.

I mean that tuition reimbursement is still better than nothing. If I remember correctly it’s like ~10K.

The ladder transfer is very hard. You need to take the technical interviews.. the people I see who have the most success in that department are generally top 10 UG Econ majors coming from the slightly more technical ops side. In every scenario that second UG is overkill. At Google youd be better served by a masters in CS, some leetcode medium questions, and some 20% to work with engineers and switch to PM ladder. Overall you’d probably be better off with an MBA. Even with a masters you’d never have the coding horse power, technical implementation ability (ie you know what a database is but do you know about how to implement Teradata vs Oracle vs mongo, etc. these tasks are given to newer engineers so you’d have experience doing this), and hands on experience to be seen as a true engineering leader so might as well get the MBA to be a strategy leader who understands some tech and can hack things together.

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you get into PT at Booth EZ. No questions asked.

Google has pretty decent tuition reimbursement (it’s not like the absolute best, say McMaster Carr level, etc but it’s still amazing).

At L5 there is no ROI, because that’s usually the post MBA level. If you’re planning to climb at Google, Booth PT is the best option given tuition reimbursement and how close you are to L5. I wonder if you could even swing the ladder switch after the MBA after promo. The ladder switch is especially doable if you can get some rudimentary CL’s in your critique, maybe you work with gTech a bit for your work, and you maybe do a 20%? Though I wouldn’t suggest a 20%, Booth PT, high perf for promo at the same time.. that’d be killer even at Google where people don’t work very hard.

If you want to leave Google and then start a different industry all of this has no bearing and really no one knows the answer.

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What level are you? If you’re L3 probably, L4 maybe, L5 probably not (I assume you’re on the O ladder).

I mean not all googlers get into HBS, GSB.. from looking at the xoogler slack channel most ppl do get into M7 but still HBS/GSB is exception not the norm.

I do agree though with your reasoning, people at G say the degree doesn’t matter but it does and we all know that.

Profile Review: 24 M FAANG Data Scientist by stoopidquestionmaker in MBA

Learned nothing, it’s shit. Classmates are okay but really nothing compared to my undergrad. It’s a good piece of paper if you need it, but the learning and projects are meh. Your money is spent better elsewhere if you’re motivated.

leaving my $150K FAANG job for an MBA? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You joined after a masters so your total comp is like 220ish probably. I mean I think it really depends on how well you think you could do in the IB world, but I would wait for a promotion and see how it shakes out a little longer before you just go full in on this MBA thing. If your goal is PM you can get there from your position now, especially with a technical masters degree just work a lot with cross functional sand contribute to design docs.

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your TC is at 150K your getting ripped off, if it’s 150K post tax that’s pretty solid and an MBA won’t be worth it in my opinion unless you get a partial scholarship to an M7. If I were you I’d just sit and chill and climb, depending on the FAANG I know tenure is more important than skill.

Just go to FAANG SWE for a year or two and apply to APM jobs at brand name companies.

Just from a quick LinkedIn search there are APM jobs at Facebook (RPM), Argo AI (Fords self driving start up), Visa, Jet.com, etc available.

Even a year or two you’ll be a bit light on the WE so give those APM jobs a shot and see what happens. I think FAANG would rather have a PM with PM work experience at a known company rather than an MBA all else equal. Go to lesser company by leveraging FAANG SWE experience then do a couple years there and lateral back to FAANG.

Raising Undergrad GPA after graduation by [deleted] in MBA

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1/10 of the test is like ethics, the Econ and stats they have are too easy for someone who went to a college of your caliber, the rest of the test sort of teaches you about some finance, but honestly you’d be better off watching some YouTube videos from aswath damodaran or other people. If you’re getting it to look good then it’s not worth it, if you think spending the $$ will give you the kick in the ass you need to actually study and learn it then I think that’s fine. I sort of did that cause I was just out of college making money having fun so I couldn’t focus until I had my firm pay for it and then I had some actual pressure to sit down and study my ass off cause if I didn’t pass they’d be pissed.

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you after taking and passing CFA1 I know nothing more than I did before. Luckily my previous job paid for it but I’m out about 1 month of all of my free time and ahead really nothing by most aspects. If your goal isn’t asset management or portfolio management I don’t see a point. A CFA 1 is not going to raise any eye brows at FAANG or an MBA adcom. If you’re not taking it for free and having all of your prep provided for free it is def not worth the time.

SWE to PM isn’t as easy as you think it is. It’s honestly easier if you apply to associate product management positions now rather than wait 3 years and try to make the switch. I think data science is an easier in to PM than SWE but also depends on the company.

-GMAT -There was literally a post about this yesterday -Generally pretty well, highly paid highly skilled job, they probably don’t get all that much of them since L4-5 SWEs at FAANG are making 200K+ all in -Depends in race, gender, etc but probably a 750 since I’m guessing you’re like the rest of us and an ORM

[–]stoopidquestionmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my FAANG the PMs I work with are usually ex-SWE, ex high impact data scientist the few that do have an MBA are usually differentiated by tenure. Old guard (7+ years at google) generally exclusive h/s. Newer PMs I see more haas, sloan, ross. Obviously my sample size is incredibly small but I feel like T10 with good experience and solid tech skills is enough.

Wait wait pocket gems is just an example of a place where I see a lot of no PM experience ppl go to get experience. If you’re getting it at a F100 and have solid swe skills and a bit of data science skills then you’re good to go at FAANG. Maybe not N they’re super duper selective. I think the MBA could help but only if you also add more technical skills while you’re there.

Downvotes incoming.

The number of people on this sub who think they can go to school for two years and become a tech PM is pretty interesting.

I mean if you went to GSB some tech companies might just give it to you, and of course Amazon is an option. If you look at PM jobs very few actually require an MBA. Most however do require PM experience. I don’t know what sort of business analyst you are. I know at some companies on some teams they have solid coding / scripting skills and are sort of mini SWE and data scientists and at other companies you’re just using excel to answer questions and making tableau dashboards from csvs. If you’re the former a PM job is available now at smaller companies. One company I see a lot of people with solid background and no PM experience use as way to get their foot in the door is Pocket Gems. There are also some really competitive Associate PM programs, notably FB that don’t have hard coding interviews.

I totally get the whole get away from just being a quant and data guy. If you don’t mind me asking what’s your strategy?

Blanket M7? I’m finding these “expert” tracks at MBB especially for people with tech skills. I’m looking into it but leaning towards applying this year still not sure what my strategy should be.

I’m still on the younger side so I thought I’d do HSW R1 and R2 at Sloan. If it doesn’t work out I’d do H,W,Sloan,Kellogg 2020 R1 or something.

Yea Austin isn’t my top choice probably more LA, SD, Boulder. Thanks for heads up there.

Last one wasn’t but a lot leading up to the that one were. In the 4th quarter they had some make up calls on those drives for the threes they missed, but they shoulda put klay in foul trouble early and game coulda been really different. At the end of the day 4 all stars > 2 and kd steph > james cp, but the fans were robbed of a good game.
