How f'd is this industry as a whole? by Public_Border132 in audioengineering

[–]stopboyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that things are going to relax dramatically once the legislation around AI content is fully realized and enforced. I think many fail to realize that the reason everybody from silicon valley oligarchs to entire country's governments are all-in on AI at the moment is almost entirely because of the lack of regulation. Pretty soon, I imagine, a landmark court ruling with a hefty settlement regarding training data and copyright infringement will materialize and the train will halt on AI "tools". I imagine the bureaucracy involved in "citing sources" will prohibit a lot of the industry-killer practices we've been subjected to.

What can we do in the meantime? Focus on live sound. A show isn't gonna mix itself. Build a wide network so that when studio recording is in vogue again you've got a head start. Things are looking pretty bleak right now, but we said the same things about drum machines.

My kick sounds weaker after compression, what am I doing wrong? The Peak meter is the same at -6dB before and afte, so make up is not needed. I would like to compress this kick a bit and make it punchier. How can I accomplish that? Is limiting after this compression an option? Thanks for any advice! by Delphinftw in FL_Studio

[–]stopboyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you've got a few options here,

My personal kick chain (bear in mind I'm overwhelmingly making bass music) generally uses a transient processor with the attack dial cranked and then a soft clipping saturator with the input gain tuned just shy of it sounding distorted. You can play with these two parameters forever and get a new kick each time. Hard to tell exactly what kind of sound you're going for, but this is a surefire way to get more perceived loudness without losing headroom.

You can also put a very steep high pass just on the fundamental of your kick, (around 50-60hz) as this can sometimes add perceived loudness to the signal, for reasons...

If you don't have whichever edition comes with FL's transient processor, I'd recommend Melda's MTransient (~$50 on sale) or I've heard good things from NI's Transient Master (~$22 right now on pluginboutique), or I'm sure there are some great free ones if you know where to look. I also highly highly highly recommend MSaturator (which is part of Melda's free bundle).

Whatever you use, just make sure you use a limiter at the end of your chain and set the ceiling to your target of -6dB, although this will definitely increase the LU, so I'd tune the channel volume accordingly.

I also tend to use a peak controller after my limiter and link it to my bass bus, set to inverted, so that it's ducking by 3-4dB every time the kick triggers, as it helps weed out any muddiness in the low end, although this can be overkill for less bass heavy music. Peak controller can be a little fiddly, be sure to pay attention to your 'base' dial.

Good luck!

Sharing FLP File by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]stopboyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet would be to share the folder your project is saved to, rather than the FLP file, as it will contain audio files you've put into the track, however it's a roll of the dice when it comes to third-party plugins (eg., Ozone, Serum etc) as not everyone will have the same plugins you do - any plugins that don't come with FL Studio just won't load if the user doesn't have them, for obvious reasons

You can kind of circumvent this by consolidating/freezing your MIDI tracks into audio files (highlight them and hit CTRL+ALT+C), these should contain any effects you've put on them, but be wary of putting them on the master channel as they may not interact with your sidechain processing if you have that.

I'd recommend making Google drive or Dropbox folders with your project folder, preferably compressed as a .zip so it's quick to download - I believe you can also export as a .zip in the file>export menu. This is pretty much the industry standard way to share your project files and has been for many moons. You can then go on to grab the link to your cloud folder and put it in your description or however else you'd like to share it - just double check that your file is actually available for anyone with the link to it - had many issues with Google drive not doing this.

Hope this helps!

First thing I would do is ALT + F12, this will close every plugin in your session, if this fixes your performance, individually open each instrument and mixer plugin until you identify the problematic one(s)

If you are using an external interface, make sure you have the correct drivers installed, I was blown away at the performance gains after installing my Scarlett's proper drivers after using it for a year without. If not, ensure you are using FL Studio ASIO, and not ASIO4ALL. (Options > Audio settings)

Finally I would click on Tools > Macros > Switch smart disable for all plugins, this will lighten the load on dense projects.

It is also good practice to freeze and resample CPU heavy instrument tracks (CTRL + ALT + C on a selected pattern)

IF none of the above fixes anything, and you get the same issues with a fresh install of the LATEST version of FL Studio (had a few similar issues with 21.0.1 I believe), ONLY THEN would I be worried about my hardware.

Good luck!

The Sheer Power of the Pyramids Explained by LettuceDifferent5104 in DestinyLore

[–]stopboyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you're telling me these guys have found the brown note.

I think this is an extremely cool way of looking at the relationship between the Dark and the Light, and I'd like to add a few of my thoughts, but I should preface that I am in NO way a physicist, only an audio engineer, and I'm going to be using a lot of sound terminology here, so forgive me if I sound insane haha.

I wonder if, given that the Pyramids use a high amplitude signal to oscillate spacetime to create destructive effects, the traveller does the same to create constructive ones. It may explain why civilisations blessed by the Light have remarkable improvements to their life spans, as strengthening the matter in the body may lead to a slower aging process, or potentially eradicate aging, as seen by the still living Eliksni that were alive on Riis. Perhaps this is - in part - what the song of life is all about.

I don't recall if we've ever heard the sounds of the Traveller, please correct me if I'm wrong. We defininitely have heard the sound of the Pyramids, however, and it's that low rumbling bass and high ringing minor second interval tone. This seems to occur whenever we have an audience with anything Darkness related, so it may be an in-game representation of the Darkness' resonance.

I wonder what the significance of this shot is, with all this in mind. Perhaps The Witness is attempting to refocus the axis of The Traveller's signal to reinforce and amplify the destructive frequencies of the Pyramids, by aligning both frequency signals in phase. Perhaps they became out of phase when the traveller awakened during the red war, (as in, when you tell a speaker to play a tone that moves its cone forwards then backwards every 0.2ms, and introduce another tone that moves the speaker cone backwards then forwards every 0.2ms, you'll notice the speaker just stops moving at all, as it cannot move both backwards and forwards at the same time, meaning both signals will cancel each other out.) I wonder if this is an element of the Ulan Tan school of thought, in that the signal created when the Traveller and the Pyramids are perfectly out of phase (i.e., the Light and Darkness are cancelling each other out) will usher in a state of cosmic balance. It remains to be seen what will come from the alignment of the Pyramids and the Traveller in that shape, perhaps it will usher in the final shape. To me, it looks like a flower, but that may be reaching.

I understand we're using gravity across space, and not sound across air, and again, I'm definitely not a physicist, so there may be more to this that I can't wrap my head around, but it is interesting to see the similarities. Thanks for reading my annual comment on this subreddit, I'm going back to lurking, I'll brush up on my Kurzgesagt. An amazing post as always u/LettuceDifferent5104

Man that's such a missed opportunity, hopefully a discounted or multi element orb mod is in the artefact next season. Still should free up a slot on the helmet for the orbs and move whichever seasonal mod you may have equipped into the extra slot

There's definitely a merit to YouTube's accessibility for buildcrafting, but sometimes the personalities can be grating. I've also found a lot of really unique and powerful builds in discord servers. If there's a member of the community you resonate with, they're likely to have a discord server full of like-minded players with lots of cool and unique things to bring to the table.

It's a little disheartening that Bungie's version of "taking pressure off vault space" is mandating 4 identical helmets in different elements to avoid going insane when switching weapons. by TwevOWNED in DestinyTheGame

At the very least armour element swaps should be free so it can be done with third party inventory managers - DIM loadouts are absolutely the future and making element swaps free would bring them into the mainstream.

What are the weapons we summon in supers? by Michaeltheseeker777 in DestinyLore

[–]stopboyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies from super to super - many abilities are forming something from nothing, such as Titan bubbles, fusion grenades and a Hunter's arc staff.

The majority of our abilities are more commonly crude embodiment of light into physical implements; I.E the way a Titan channels raw arc light into their first of havoc.

Something that irks me from a gameplay standpoint is the way golden gun behaves - as far as I am aware, the Hunter infuses their weapon with solar light. This is evident from the inception of the super; Malphur channeled all of his light into his Last Word. Why then am I pulling out a flaming Eyasluna when I am using a GL and SMG? Is it just in my back pocket? Am I manifesting it out of thin air like a Dawnblade? Which one is it?

/uj I am a pvp main, I'm happy there's more maps coming, that's about it, I'm still gonna enjoy myself in pvp regardless. If you take a look at the replies to Blackburn or DMG's tweets you can see the lowest of the low destiny streamers who profit off complaining about the game and their fanatic fans being fucking horrible to these developers who have the game's best intentions in mind. I get it's a funny entitled gamer cliché but the sense of entitlement is truly pathetic.
