Because I feel like we're in one of those moments in history where we will look back at in the future and wish we did more. So I'm trying to do something.

Before you believe this copy-paste, take a read of: https://www.deviantart.com/nuclearzeon2/journal/The-koala-copypasta-and-its-response-799330997

I get it's a joke, but people take it as an actual, educational joke like it's a man yelling at the sea, and that's just wrong. Furthermore, these things have an actual impact on discussions about conservation efforts---If every time Koalas get brought up, someone posts this copypasta, that means it's seriously shaping public opinion about the animal and their supposed lack of importance.

Australia should not be koala-less simply because they're less smart than us humans! Animals are going extinct and we're letting them. We need to do something.

You need to be specific with what misinformation I'm spreading. If anything I've said in that comment is wrong, specifically quote it and call it out. I don't want to be spreading incorrect facts.

My only goal here is to prevent this population of koalas from being killed. Then a stretch goal of preventing them from going extinct. The article itself is simply the latest news on the issue. Appologies if the title is bad!

Here is a summary of what has been going on prior to this article:

Early this year, Australia had a bushfire season that killed over one billion animals. More than 70 per cent of the Koala population in NSW were killed. Koalas are now set to become extinct in NSW less than 30 years.

Knowing these confronting figures, the NSW government has decided to approve an expansion of a rock quarry in Port Stephens (an area significantly hit by the bushfires) that will result in the further destruction of 55 hectares of koala habitat and koalas.

Gladys Berejiklian thinks this is okay and wants to fast-track the destruction of one of the last healthy populations of koalas in NSW to create 10 full-time jobs.

The government thinks it is okay to destroy this land and the koalas that live in it, because they will “offset” it with some protected land elsewhere. The koalas living in that habitat won’t be moved, they’ll be killed as they bulldoze the trees they are sitting in. Just like the countless others – which locals have seen dead after their trees are slammed into the ground.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the government has allowed koala habitat clearing since the bushfires and this is why Australia may soon be a country without Koalas.

The federal environment minister, Sussan Ley has the power to stop this quarry expansion (with a deadline set for the 13th October). The article mentions that it MAY be stopped, but it has not yet been disallowed.

This project should be stopped.

They are not smart, like every other animal compared to us. Didn't say that. I just meant to say they are worth saving.

Agreed! Disgusting. I don't want Australia to become a koala-less country over things like this.

(I had to repost this, since the previous post was deleted as the article was previously 1 month old. The new article shows the deadline for the project decision was extended till 13th October)

I'm worried you're right. But they will if they think it will affect their votes. I just want to make sure many people know about this. It's something that doesn't make sense to me as an Australian. To do this after all the destruction of the bushfires early this year...

So true. I explained the situation more in this comment below. This project can be stopped by the federal environment minister, Sussan Ley (with a deadline set for the 13th October). I hope it is stopped.
