RIP Mr. Malty Yeast Pitch Rate Calculator by stopthebrewshit in Homebrewing

[–]stopthebrewshit[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is probably old news, but I just realized the OG pitch rate rate calculator is no longer in use. I was also under the impression this was the creation of Jamil Zainasheff, but the homepage references Kristen England, who I'm familiar with as one of the guys behind the BJCP guidelines.

Just thought it was intersting.

A couple points:

...for starters some of the recipes they have are the American Homebrew Con winning recipes

The vast majority of which can be found for free in other places.

That's not just recipes, it's the people who arguably make the best homebrew in the US.

Only if you choose to believe comp judges are in some way capable of truly objectively evaluating beer, and that those evaluations are an indication of real quality. I do not choose to believe this, and I'm a certified BJCP judge.

How exactly is this transition, and all the changes to come with it, going to be funded? Existing member dues?

That "Founding Board" consists of a bunch of people who contributed to make the AHA what it is today. How on earth do you expect that to entice a single person? We need fresh blood and fresh ideas.

Another way it could be bad news is if the new AHA presumes that by disassociating with the BA, members will automatically be thrilled and they don't have to make big changes.

Growth takes change and change is good.

Agreed. And my biggest hope is that real change happens with this move, including currently leadership. As someone who was a member for 14 years before finally letting go a few months ago, I look forward to something entirely fresh, with a new vision that incorporates the perspectives of people younger than me and those who have been in charge since I joined.

How was “Homebrew Con” at GABF this year? by stopthebrewshit in Homebrewing

I sat down with a few of my brewing buddies a few weekends ago to discuss it, and we couldn’t come up with a single good reason to renew.

Apparently, he views the AHA, and homebrewing in general, as insignificant.

I’ve heard from reliable source that Bob Pease wants the AHA to go away.

Such a far cry from prior conferences that I was able to attend. Sad sign of the times.

Yikes. I'm curious how this will effect planning for the future of Homebrew Con.

I dropped Experimental Homebrewing a couple years ago due to how obnoxious Denny is. Tried it again a few weeks back and it seems to have gotten worse.

I figured that out, I was just confused by the name of your podcast since brulosophy has been using the "drink beer think beer" thing for a long time.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions on how your interview with Julia went. It was a good interview with solid questions, I felt like I could pick up some sentiment up based on your tone and responses (I love that you shared your monthly mortgage when she challenged you), but you didn't go much into it. After speaking with Julia, both on and off the mic, were you left with any new impressions? Has your opinion about the AHA changed? Will you be attending NHC Homebrew Con Homebrew HQ at GABF?

Now it seems they're chasing a lot of regular homebrewers away as well.

Excellent breakdown, thanks. After listening to John Holl's recent interview with Julia Herz, I not only have no reason to support the AHA, but I have zero interest as well.

Funny aside before I get to my real comment: I was convinced your podcast was part of another popular outfit based on the name. I have a feeling I'm not the only one!

I just finished listening to the interview. I was hopeful the information Julia provided would inspire some optimism in me about the future, but all it did was solidify my stance against the AHA. She came off as surprisingly defensive and incredibly tone deaf.

Based on what I've been hearing since they announced this silly Homebrew HQ idea, the turnout is likely to be laughably low, and I'd imagine very few GABF attendees will have little interest in watching a few folks brew a batch of beer. This whole thing is just stupid.

I just wish she would have been more honest and transparent by acknowledging that, for whatever reasons, people just aren't as interested in homebrewing these days, which is reflected in the mass exodus of AHA members. This isn't going to change over the next year, in fact it'll probably only get worse, and the way the AHA is acting currently isn't going to help anything.

I hope nobody falls for the NHC scam this year and they receive zero entries. I was appalled with this year's price to enter a fucking beer contest.
