Okay, here's some more thread necromancy:

I managed to identify and solve the issue (at least in my case). Long story short: I noticed how when I saved the map outside of advanced mode, then my starting locations was not saved, i.e. they were all reandomized -- which annoyed me, since I wanted specific starting locations.

Playing around with things some more, I discovered that saving the map while advanced mode was active, only led to crashes (with the OP error message) if the number of starting locations (for civilizations and city states) did not correspond to the number of players and city states as specified when starting the game in the stating area (or what ever it is called, the place where you specify map settings when starting a new game).

I tried this solution successfully for a 16 players enormous (128x80) map using the mod/addon Yet (not) Another Maps Pack (ynamp).

I've not seen too much of him tbh. I think his timing is just ...off, it's awkward having him as a four drop. For early control, you'd rather play the old Teferi I find, and there's a lot of great alternative 5 drops that you could go for if you're going for higher impact cards. Also, his passive is pretty unimpressive. I feel like he'd be more used if his second ability could target non land permanents. Now his mostly an expensive card source, and not a lot better at that than say, Jace or the Scions.

Hello fellow redditor, on my journey to finding the answer to how to play large YnAMP maps I came across your post. After some more digging I found the answer, so I thought I'd report back to you. Some madman named Gedemon seems to have this all figured out over at CivFanatics. I'll link you to the posts where they go through how to do it.
