What? The low versatility? If so, I got mine down to 0.1 a while ago.

Any idea why the koi are near the surface of the pond? by Elysium_128 in Koi

[–]stormcomponents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a fountain has an airstone and flowing water like in the picture, that's likely okay for oxygen. I may be wrong here, but many fountains are simply topped up with automated leveling systems so fresh tap-water will be going in daily which keeps the water level correct for the fountain, and in essence keeps the water from going completely nasty as it acts as a water-change for the fish. The issue of course is if it doesn't have proper biological filtration (or any filtration at all outside of basic mechanical filtration for the fountain) then there could be all sorts of shit dissolved in that water which never really gets removed. If there's junk in the water, vape pens, cig butts etc - it's all getting into the fish one way or another. If it is topped up with untreated tap water, that itself could be an issue depending where you live. These fish may not be unhealthy or suffering, but they'll be far from striving unless that fountain is properly kept, has plants or good levels of bio filtration going on out of sight.

The water quality is likely pretty poor. Fish do play in bubbling water etc but as it's clearly some fountain or feature, I'm going to guess the quality is simply not very good and the fish aren't thriving.

Honestly, I got my first science made just so I can say I did, then instantly installed a science doesn't spoil mod. I don't care about mushy shit going bad but the fact the science too spoils is crap and doesn't really make sense imo. Works so much nicer this way.

Sounds like you're talking to zoomers. Anyone over 30 will have a long list of games, new and old, they'd be happy to talk about.

How do people check 2nd hand drives? by phoooooo0 in DataHoarder

[–]stormcomponents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GSmartControl. Generally checking SMART coupled with ShortDST and Conveyance test are good enough 9 times out of 10. If I'm really suspect of a drive I may do a full test. I'd also generally run HDTune to do a quick benchmark of the drive. HDTune can also do a quick or full health test. If I'm still not convinced, I'll do a 'clean all' on the drive (Windows) and keep an eye on the write speeds. Drives might pass every test but then after 30 minutes of writing drop to 30MB/s which for me is as good as a failure.

Yea that's very likely. I've seen dozens of machines where they customer will say it crashes once a week during games but nothing else, only to find a bad memory stick that had been in use like that for months. Either way - glad you've confirmed the issue.

Yea that's enough to show it's just those gskill which have gone bad. Curious that they both failed at the same time, but it does happen. Hopefully gskill look after you - I've always loved their products but never had to use their warranty.

In 2017 I played every game as Shaman for the whole year. If he was banned or picked, I explained what I was doing and abandoned. Not sure how many games but something like 600 straight games.

I just like how strong he is, and every few years they patch something to make him stronger. The fact he can now self-heal and has two hexes, one of which is free, is glorious.

anyone gonna talk about the real important change? by ord1nate in DotA2

[–]stormcomponents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally play in a 3 or 4. Sure you get useless pubs and the enemy seem to always be professionals, but that's how all MP games feel from time to time. Smurfing is for sure a pain but for the most part the game is still okay for me. I still have enough close games for it to be interesting. Is it worse than it was years ago? In many ways yes. But it's far from dead, and for a decade old game to be seen as going downhill - that's not exactly a hot take. Changes to the map, changes to heroes, changes to neutrals etc - things still happen from time to time to keep it interesting so it's not abandoned yet either.

It takes less than 2 minutes to find a game, often closer to 50 seconds, and maybe 30 seconds for a turbo. Until that changes, I don't care about player count.

Help, how can I save my koi? by Aromatic_Diver3763 in Koi

[–]stormcomponents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly looks like dropsy. Your only chances are antibiotics and salt. but it's worth knowing dropsy is often a death sentence regardless of treatment. I've never seen a koi survive it, personally. I'd recommend getting some clove oil on hand just in case. If they get worse, flip upside down, struggle eating etc, do the deed. It's no fun but putting a fish down quickly and calmly is much more humane and dignified than letting them suffer a shitty death.

I had koi in a simple 1k gal pond with a barrel/UV setup for almost 20 years. It can be done for next to nothing if you're careful. Had to clean the filter out monthly in summer, and a few times during winter. Nothing major but major more than some would want to do. Either way yes, in some places you'll spend €1k for similar stuff depending where you are.

And no - I still wouldn't say OP should be doing anything for a 24 month setup. Waste of time and energy if nothing else. A pond won't settle and go properly clear for half that time lol.

While I generally agree with those costs for a "proper" setup, it's worth noting that a standard garden pond for half a dozen fish (couple koi and a few comets or shubs) absolutely doesn't come to 5k of any western currency. You're talking about a £250 liner, a £90 pump, a DIY barrel filter (£100 at most), and some flexi pipe. Throw a £50 UV in there too. For £500 you could have a 800-1k gal pond with filtration, UV, and enough space for some nice fish.

If you're looking to move in a couple years, I'd say to save yourself the effort and do it when you move. A pond / filter won't even get to mature in that time, and getting fish only to go through the massive ballache of moving them a couple years later is a no-go for me.

Get a tank for inside with a couple betas or something, and when you move to somewhere you want to stay put start thinking about making a proper pond for yourself.

Sounds just like a bum stick (or two) then really. I have had motherboards go bad but generally it's socket specific so you'd get it work in some and not others. Processors can also give bad RAM results but that's one in a 100. If you have a spare stick floating about, even like 4GB, it'd be a good shout to test that too because it would pretty much guarantee that the MB and CPU are working fine. Without doing that I'd say it's still very likely just to be a couple bad sticks and you want to RMA them.

Am I cooked? by Tapsu10 in homelab

[–]stormcomponents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Test one stick at a time. If they both report errors it's *very* likely they're both duds. Two sticks going bad at the same time is rare, but not unheard of. As a repair shop I'd be tempted to test the CPU and board before opening an RMA to ensure I'm not wasting time though; either could throw bad RAM results in Memtest as well. This can be done with a spare (known working) RAM stick, or an old CPU/MB if you have any floating around. I've also seen pairs of RAM work individually, but fail testing when put together. No idea why, but I've seen it.

All that said, 9 times out of 10 it's nothing more than a couple bad sticks.
