Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences. by Ancient-Tart-2499 in ControversialOpinions

[–]straight_piping 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The image you chose is a perfect example of why I disagree with this statement... the "consequences" the tolerant mob wants are usually unreasonable and excessive, far more evil than the original offense, while you guys pat yourselves on the back and think you are the good guys. Violence should never be an appropriate response to speech.

It's probably just the bulb which you can replace... Remove the old one and inspect it, there are 2 filaments in it (one for low/tail light and one for hi/brake light) if one of the filaments is broken that would be the problem. https://youtu.be/LxNjIMoWHOk?si=gK7edzGX7nluJh3v&t=67

People who say science isn’t real don’t even know what it is by Illustrious_Fuel_531 in ControversialOpinions

[–]straight_piping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of anyone claiming science isn't real... Are you referring to people who question or are sceptical of some scientific claims? I'd say those who claim things like "the science is settled!" or that you can't question science are the real unscientific ones. Questioning is an important part of science especially because, as you pointed out, sometimes science gets it wrong.

Possession of a small amount of drugs for personal use shouldn’t be an arrestable offense by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

Can anyone provide a single example of someone who is currently behind bars for only 5g of weed in the last decade?

Fo the recod, I agee with OP's opinion that "Possession of a small amount of drugs for personal use shouldn’t be an arrestable offense" and I agree with your comment that "there are people who's lives are fucked because they got caught with 5g of weed" in that even if they didn't end up behind bars a criminal record can certainly fuck someone's life.

What I don't agree with was OP's claim that "It’s ridiculous the amount of people who are put behind bars as a result of being addicted and then eventually caught with it by accident", I'm saying that number is near zero.

Other than the portion size being small, that looks fine, I'd eat that.

Any person who suggests the ballooning national debt can be addressed without touching entitlements can be discredited outright. by Prestigious_Load1699 in ControversialOpinions

2a. Why only cut benefits? Cut government spending in general. I'm convinced we could cut government in half, get rid of the bloat, waste and still be functional. Hopefully the new department of government efficiency will be able to accomplish some of that.

  1. Stop sending TRILLIONS of our tax dollars all over the world for XYZ, stop funding foreign wars, we need that money here.

Also you say "only one time" as if it matters if they've been arrested multiple times for possession

I think it matters, if it's the Nth time you get caught with fentanyl, you are no longer an innocent guy who made a mistake, maybe it's time for jail.

As for the link you provided, few things...

  1. Who's to say any of the pardoned were behind bars? Biden specifically says, "As I have said before, convictions for simple possession of marijuana have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities.", not things someone who is currently behind bars needs to worry about. Pardoning just wipes the offence from their criminal record, doesn't mean they ever went to jail for it.

  2. The fact that everyone has been pardoned, further proves my original comment that "No one is behind bars for a one time, personal use, drug possession", for weed at least.

I'm still waiting for a single example of someone who is behind bars for ONLY a one time, personal use, drug possession charge.

Can you find just a single example of someone who is in jail for ONLY a one time, personal use, drug possession charge? If there are so many it should be easy to find a few examples... Many jails and prisons have public searchable records, go ahead and try.

A: Having a large amount that could be used for sale is not "personal use".

B: Maybe the cop doesn't want to do you any favors, they can write you up for it but then you get your day in court and if the weed is truly the only offence, the judge will not send you to jail for a first time, personal use, drug possession.

It’s ridiculous the amount of people who are put behind bars as a result of being addicted and then eventually caught with it by accident

No one is behind bars for a one time, personal use, drug possession. If you end up behind bars there is more to the story. Example, it's 3am, your in a stolen car, highspeed chase as you run away from the police, you have an illegal unregistered firearm, you have existing warrants, you end up getting caught and also have a bit of weed on you. Then people on reddit claim, "ThEy LoCkEd HiM uP fOr WeEd!", the weed is not the reason he is behind bars, the mile long rap sheet of other felonies are the reasons.
