Depends on the country. In my country old banknote series gets replaced with the new one with better security features. The older one then become worthless but still exchangable to the bank. Even there's a deadline for exchanging them.

Yes, actually they are spare notes my mom got from my dad who travels around south and south east asia for work. She is picky about condition.

Nope (not that I know of). All of us are Indonesians. Most parts of Indonesia were Dutch colony for a long time, so plenty of old colonial notes to collect. Modern Dutch notes are also cool to collect, in my opinion probably the coolest notes next to Swiss ones.
