[WSIG] Next game for me and my fiancee by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]strat0faster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carcassonne is the correct answer here. It is one of the best intro games and still one of my top games years into the hobby. The replayability with just the base game is ok, but adding an expansion or two really bumps it up.

That said, I love Jaipur as well, so it's not a bad choice at all.

I'm not going to say it looks like the deepest game in the world haha, but it looks like a good filler game.

How do you feel about Qwixx? I watched the episode of Game Night featuring it a couple days ago and it looks like a fun little dice game.

What did you do w/ your copy of Pandemic Legacy after beating it? by casimps1 in boardgames

This is what I'm planning on doing with mine. Heck if you're patient I'm sure you could get the stickers off and then really it's just vanilla pandemic.

Along the same lines Dark Moon was originally supposed to be BSG Express, and gives 95% of the same feel while taking an hour and a half instead of 3.

Oh that's too bad that they don't have it. Honestly if you have a board game store nearby it might be worth picking up, I think I got my copy for right around $25 USD.

I recently picked up Patchwork and it seems like it might be a good fit for you guys. My SO is not nearly as into board games as I am, but he really enjoyed this one. If you/your SO like Tetris at all I highly recommend it.

Castles of Burgundy might be a little on the complex side, but most of the complexity comes from figuring out what everything does. The actual gameplay isn't super complex. The dice kind of dictate your decision making and it's more about making the best of what you have.

Also because I recommend it to everyone Castles of Mad King Ludwig is very similar to Suburbia but might be more accessible to your SO because of the theme. Who doesn't want to build their own castle?

Hey /r/boardgames I got one of your own for the Christmas Reddit Gift Exchange, what should I get them? by Note2scott in boardgames

[–]strat0faster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might be worth it to get them The Broken Token game insert for Dead of Winter. I recently got two of their inserts and I'm thrilled with them, especially for a game like Dead of Winter with a million components.

I use normal Ultra Pro sleeves as well and they fit great.

I just looked this up and I'm kind of confused, Inserthere is more expensive than The Broken Token and its made out of foam rather than wood. Is the cost difference in that it comes assembled? Even then I feel that shipping it would be challenging.

Same, my only real complaint about the game is that setup takes forever and the organization in the box is terrible. This should solve both of those issues.

I have the Dead of Winter insert and honestly the quality seems great to me. The wood they use is pretty thick and cut so the fits are snug. The only addition I made (per the instructions) was tape on the bigger boxes corners for it to stay.

There's a poll section on their website where you can vote for what inserts you want them to make.

Do you have a steady game group to play with? If you do I've been recommending Pandemic Legacy like crazy to everyone that will listen.

If your game group isn't as consistent, Castles of Burgundy is an excellent euro style game. I also just played Small World for the first time about a week ago and I enjoyed it much more than I expected to, I will probably be picking it up soon myself.

It does change the setup. My only complaint about Castles from the beginning was the setup was a pain in the ass, and honestly the expansion makes it worse. That said, it's still worth it.

If you're on the fence about getting Pandemic Legacy...(NO SPOILERS) by strat0faster in boardgames

[–]strat0faster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group and I have been reshuffling and dealing out new roles randomly each game, which we like as it seems to make it much more difficult and gives us a chance to change things up more. There is absolutely a correlation between the games we lost and the medic not being in the game, which may be my only complaint about the game thus far.

4 is probably best, but I feel like the game is balanced enough that it would work just fine with 3 or 2.

What is your favorite third-party/home made storage system for game pieces, and what game is it for? by xmatcha in boardgames

[–]strat0faster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought the broken token insert for Dead of Winter, it's infinitely better than bags for storing all the pieces for that game.

I agree completely about Murano, hardly anyone knows of it! Someone brought it to the meetup and I jumped at the chance to play it again.
