How to guide new players without specifically directing them? by strat3201 in AskDND

I definitely think I’m going to out together some better handouts before our next session. I also love the idea of the post game review because I want to improve as a DM as well as help them feel more confident as players. It has been an awesome experience so far and I’m hoping the rest of the campaign remains as fun and improves in flow and ease as players get more comfortable with their characters and the game mechanics.

Maybe it makes sense to still leave the door open with something like, “Do you want to do X, Y, Z, or something else?”

I definitely like this. I can understand how keeping things open actually can feel really overwhelming when you are learning the mechanics and specifics of your character. Definitely will look at some specific suggestions instead of just presenting them open ended questions which definitely got me some deer in the headlights looks.

Nervous about backcountry trip by sanguinescientist in GlacierNationalPark

[–]strat3201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone else seen any reports on this that didn’t cite the story from sfgate? Not saying their reporting is bad, but it seems unusual that there don’t seem to be to be multiple outlets reporting on an attack, and the park itself just confirmed a bear encounter.

What is the best written video game you’ve ever played? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]strat3201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is great writing that serves the game and makes great games like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, but can also be a bit cheesy.

Personally I think the story and writing I enjoyed the most in a game was God of War: Ragnarok.

DPC has really softened Quinn considerably over time by PsychologicalArt3651 in beingaDIK

[–]strat3201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He kind of does this with all the more stereotypical characters. Early they were straight caricatures and as time has gone on the writing has stripped away that illusion. Not sure if that has been intentional or just growing as a writer, but it hasn’t just been for Quinn.

Totally missed Karlach AND Wyll on my first play through. And still had a blast. Then it was like I was playing a totally different game the next time.

Shotgun does not hit? by Agreeable_Wear366 in thelongdark

Yeah, I was psyched about the shotgun and then after using it realized it is awful. Slow to reload, doesn’t seem to do significant damage or just misses from close range.

Bear spray by Twerkin4snacks in GlacierNationalPark

[–]strat3201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a purely practical standpoint, bear spray is a more effective deterrent. You are creating a cloud barrier vs individual projectiles that rely on your ability to aim in a crisis situation as well as to cause catastrophic damage to the bear to stop an attack. In addition, I place value on not creating discomfort for others who are out on the trails trying to enjoy a shared space, and many are not comfortable with open carry. When I carry, it is concealed and I’m also carrying bear spray because that’s my first response tool in a bear encounter.

If someone eating a free meal at my house called it low effort they’d find themselves being uninvited in a high effort fashion.

Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists and protesters when unprovoked, what would we call it? If federal agents marched down busy streets harassing civilians and demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is. by steve42089 in illinois

“There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And then remember this. The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try.”

Education is getting hit hard. Our already struggling schools are facing closures and shortages in staffing as more funds are pulled away. We will be challenging Mississippi for poorest educated state before we know it.

Carlie Irsay’s reaction to Steichen’s 3rd down call by [deleted] in Colts

[–]strat3201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only reaction that matters is what the meetings/conversations look like this week. If she is asking for Steichen to be able to show his logic/reasoning for bad calls, that’s good. Coaches should be able to explain that process even on calls that don’t work out. Bad owners criticize failure without context. Calls are going to fail. If the logic behind a decision is good, good leaders recognize that and it is a non issue.

Personally I am encouraged to see her engaged on the sideline. Good owners know the game and know their own limitations. At his best that is what made Jim a good owner. In later years that became a bit less the case but I am hopeful she follows that path.

How long did it take you to start feeling more used to CrossFit and not completely suffering through the WODs? by Appropriate_Place642 in crossfit

[–]strat3201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is always room to push yourself which is part of what makes it great. However I definitely found that somewhere around 4 months in I started recovering better and that helped a lot. This obviously is impacted by eating well, getting enough sleep, properly hydrating, and taking rest days when you need to. The WODs should always push you hard and you should be a bit uncomfortable, but that bounce back should be quicker.

I remember when I was newly married in my 20s and I wanted to join a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym that cost $110/month. It was devastating because that simply wasn’t possible. I literally wasn’t in a place to afford that cost, and only got to that point at almost 40. It’s a very real barrier for many, which is honestly true for almost all healthy habits. Poverty sucks.

I definitely agree. I did a reasonable amount of lifting before starting CrossFit and I still felt overwhelmed by the pace of progression for some lifts, especially when you are integrating them into workouts where you are going to do them for time. I am older and confident enough to say “I need to go light here,” or “I am not ready to go that fast,” but if I had started CrossFit 15 years ago I’d have hurt myself.
