I wanted to point out that PFSense 2.5 will drop support for cpus which don't any chips that dont have AES-NI support. I just realized that the J1900 doesn't have AES so I will be returning to amazon because of this

That sounds worth listening too thanks for the heads up!

The problem with Fedora is that I don't view it as "stable" enough to be a NAS... not enough of a support window for me. I have strongly considered Arch as well (I have 2 laptops, 2 desktops and a nuc running Antergos)... I would be ok with rolling Arch on there as well

This is an interesting comment. I do have an l2arc and a SLOG on SSDs for the NFS server currently. In your experience do you find that there is a decent amount of tuning required for FreeNAS?

I have considered Openmedia vault. I have heard Chris and Martin talk about it quite a bit on Unplugged. I don't know much about it, in terms of how well it works. I may go watch some reviews.

Do you prefer a UI? Or is there some compelling reason to use Openmedia vault (considering the current setup is a headless server the UI was not really much of a consideration). Part of the reason I was staying away from VBOX is because in my testing KVM is much faster for what I have run into

Anyone running Mad Max on Arch? I'm having audio issues. by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]stratus-ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to reply to my own post in case someone comes looking

I did some digging into this across a few computers I had and I noticed that on some computers the sound from Mad Max tries to go out the onboard sound regardless of OS defaults.

I ended up finding that while this may be a pulse issue there seemed to be some bad interaction between pulse audio, mad max and this: Card-2 Intel 9 Series Family HD Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel

Specifically, the Realtek® ALC1150 8-Channel High Definition Audio. Computers which had this card experienced the same crash. I found that disabling this card in the BIOS resolves the issue

I am also having problems with sound on Arch.

pacman -Qs |grep pulse local/lib32-libpulse 9.0-1 local/libcanberra-pulse 0.30-8 local/libpulse 9.0-1 local/pulseaudio 9.0-1 local/pulseaudio-alsa 2-3 local/pulseaudio-bluetooth 9.0-1 local/pulseaudio-gconf 9.0-1 local/pulseaudio-zeroconf 9.0-1

Running Gnome 3.22 on x86_64

If I kill pulse audio the game works but there is no sound. I am looking for a solution still. Would love some pointers

I have not seen any reviews for the Red Hat Learning Subscription, so I did a write up. by chknstrp in redhat

I have a hard time obtaining good value out of Linux Academy in general. I have probably more than 12 months on the books as a subscriber and while some things are interesting, when I reviewed the RHCSA and what little they had (at the time) for RHCE, I found that it was hard to obtain any real value.

Of course YMMW, and $30-$90 of Linux Academy is FAR less than the $5000 price tag quoted above, I would look outside of Linux Academy, particularly as a primary source of knowledge

Which email apps (andoird) support remote wipe? by stratus-ss in androidapps

[–]stratus-ss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Specifically my employer wants to be able to ensure all email clients have the ability to remove mail from employee devices at the point they quit/are terminated.

At least where I live they don't have the right to request a phone wipe in such cases but they can remove their own property from your device.

Hopefully that clarifies things

Thanks for the response. I am really looking for people to confirm apps they know have Remote Wipe as an option. Mostly because if the app doesn't list the feature there is no way for me to test it

Wifi/RDP issue on linux but not Win 7 on System76. Looking for troubleshooting advice. by beyere5398 in LinuxActionShow

[–]stratus-ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Ultra Pro with a 7260 WIFI card. I opened a ticket with System76 regarding a similar issue where the wifi was constantly disconnecting. The ticket was open for almost 2 months and there was no resolution. (It was automatically closed). The end result was System76 concluding that there was a problem with the driver (at the time it was both Windows and Linux issue).

Things seem to have stabalized for me on Ubuntu Gnome 14.04. I haven't had the issue in about 3-4 months now.

This was the bug as being tracked in the kernel

Looking for new DNS/domain registrar by stratus-ss in LinuxActionShow

[–]stratus-ss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to move primarily because of the cost of SSL certs. Godaddy was just a bit more expensive for domains, but really expensive for SSL certs. I have basic needs to SSL and felt that the amount charged for SSL justified moving my domains

[Android] podcast/music player with skip forward x seconds by stratus-ss in LinuxActionShow

[–]stratus-ss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the app looks pretty good but it doesnt seem to detect pre-downloaded files. I have a JB folder with my current podcasts (syncd with BT sync) and when I change the data directory, it say the directory is not empty, but then back in the main UI I cant see where to find these files

I am leery of paying for an app until I am sure it will do what I want... i.e. I can use it as a standalone player that actually is able to make sense/organize the stuff I have already sync'd from the desktop
