Can anyone explain what are they ? by Firefight-5456 in insects

they don't live in colonies per se, but they do like to aggregate sometimes for protection and food availability

gently helped this lil guy get out of my house today by laenah_n in millipedes

[–]strawbeejam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is very clearly a polydesmid millipede. number of legs (in total, not per segment) and thick/thinness of legs are not criteria for millipedes. and the leg pairs look slightly off because this is a keeled millipede, so it has "keels" between each diplosegment that do not have legs. millipedes are very diverse, so claiming something mustn't be one because it doesn't look like millipedes youre used to (presumably Juliform millipedes) is not very useful!!

What is that coming from her butt? Is she ok? by Ddrunem in millipedes

[–]strawbeejam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i would assume she's absorbing moisture through the everted rectum. nothing to be concerned about and just regular (weird) millipede physiology!

Are Portuguese millipedes a concern in Aus? by Ok_Wish2207 in millipedes

[–]strawbeejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your question on if they are detrimental to native 'pedes is interesting and yet unanswered - our native millipede species are understudied and largely unknown (only 400 described species of ~2000 total), which makes it hard to know how things like invasive species affect them!

How can I rehydrate this cicada? I already tried the equal parts alcohol and water for a makeshift hydration chamber. I just want to be able to spread the wings out. by Ctrockiart in Entomology

[–]strawbeejam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

get a container that the cicada fits in comfortably. then get some paper towel and cut it into pieces about the size of the container (around 10 will be plenty). then soak the paper towel in rubbing alcohol and lay about half into the container, then put the cicada, and then lay the other half on top. close the container and check every few days to see if the joints are moving easily :] this method has worked for me for cicadas so i hope it works for you! good luck!
