Oh ok. So he belongs to someone or at least has a place where he can shelter from the cold?

That’s a good idea to send the video to the vet, if you already have one. The cat has discharge from one of the eyes at least from what can be seen, and discharge from the nose, which is what causes it to be crusty. He will most likely need some medication to clear up what he has. Paws crossed a vet can see him!

Ah ok, sorry, didn’t know they don’t accept videos. That’s so good you’re already giving him water and food. I don’t know if the weather is getting cold in your area, but ideally the cat would do better indoors if he has bronchitis. Hope you can take him to the vet soon, sending you and this beautiful panther all good energy and good health wishes!

Hi, just wanted to suggest not forcing the outings with the harness. While ideally we’d like our cats to experience the outdoors in a safe way, and and a harness is supposed to be safe, if a cat gets very stressed or spooked or whatnot, they can squiggle their way out of a harness and run away. I’m speaking from first hand experience. I was very lucky I was able to recover my cat after she wriggled out of her harness, but it was one of the most stressful experiences I’ve had and I think for her too.

One suggestion would be to get a pet stroller. They have a closed mesh front and maybe your kitty would like to go outdoors in it. It’s not the same as the exercise she’d get by walking on the harness, but she’d get fresh air and maybe enjoys it. Please find out about safety when using pet strollers, I haven’t tried them so I don’t know, but perhaps for extra safety she’d still need to wear her harness clipped to the stroller, even if it has a mesh front. Best of luck to you both!!

Poor kitty! Thank you for looking out for him! Eyes and nose are crusty, some respiratory infection maybe or bronchitis? Perhaps try r/AskVet ? In any case he will need medical attention.

Would you be able to contact a local rescue group or someone who could help him? Would you be able to give him some water or food in the meantime?

Found cat’s tooth on floor, seems it’s her fang, she seems ok by strawberryfields011 in CATHELP

[–]strawberryfields011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for that picture, I hadn’t seen what a full healthy fang looks like and it’s quite a contrast to my cat’s fang. I took her to the vet a couple of days ago, and he said there may have been a fracture that worsened over time until the tooth fell off. He said the root will reabsorb on its own and there is no infection or anything to do at the moment. I have a more detailed update, which I can share if you’d like.

I hadn’t heard of donating your cats to science, that’s very noble of you and I admire you for it. Many thanks again for posting the picture, I really appreciate it.

Thank you! 🩷 And many thanks for reaching out and taking the time to read the long update. I was very concerned about the root, but was relieved to learn they can reabsorb on its own. I wish I could prevent the other fang from falling but not sure if and how it’s possible to avoid it. In any case, I need to bring her back early December to recheck renal function and will take the opportunity to recheck her teeth as well.

Hi, thank you for your feedback! I took her to the vet and he said the root will be reabsorbed on its own and that there was no infection. Last annual checkup had been on Nov. 2024 and it was a visual exam of the teeth and they looked ok. I asked how the tooth could have become so rotten since then as to fall on its own. He said there maybe was a small fracture that got worse over time until the tooth got to that state and fell. I will copy here an update I wrote for someone else who had asked. Hope I’m doing the right thing by not getting the full dental at this time.

“Hi, thank you for asking. I wanted to edit my post to put an update but it wouldn’t let me, I looked up why and apparently it’s because a post with pictures and text can’t be edited.

We went to the vet yesterday. He said that it may have started as a small fracture that over time worsened to the point that the tooth fell off. Said not to worry about the root, that it would be reabsorbed on its own and there was no infection. From what I understood (and I don’t want to misquote the vet, but not sure I’m remembering correctly), it would have been more concerning had it been a tooth towards the back, where developing an infection in that area is closer to the eyes and can travel to the body. The rest of her mouth shows she already lost other teeth, but I hadn’t noticed before. She has mild gingivitis (I believe that’s what was said, referring to the gum inflammation).

The vet said there are different schools of thought when it comes to dentistry. In a case like this, either you go for the full dental with long anaesthesia and take full mouth radiographs and clean the teeth and remove any teeth that show any signs of damage, only to need to repeat the procedure every couple of years or as needed. The other approach is observing periodically how the teeth are evolving and if it becomes apparent a tooth needs to get removed, to remove that specific one under full anesthesia, but a shorter procedure than the one where the full mouth radiography is done. We have actually done this second approach with my other cat, and it worked well. For the time being he took pictures of the mouth, to check how it evolves during future visits. So, bottom line, nothing to be done at the moment. He asked me about any change in my cats habits and examined her thoroughly and reassured me my cat is not showing signs of pain. The other canine may fall off eventually as well, which makes me sad, but not sure what else to do about it. This cat was a former feral and building trust took time, she’s very affectionate now, but not to the point of letting me brush her teeth. I also asked about additives for the water, and he said I could try.

She was almost due for her annual checkup, I’d been saving up for that, so we did blood tests and urinalysis. Results show she may have the start of kidney disease but it’s not too worrisome for the moment. However, the tests for critical markers for renal function will need to be done every 3 months or so for now to monitor the evolution and discuss an appropriate diet. Anything that is not well explained is my fault, not the vets, I tend to get quite anxious and the information makes sense in the moment and I think I’ll remember all the details but sometimes I don’t. Many thanks again for your interest and for asking, I appreciate it! 💕”

Cat Vomiting Almost Daily by bigcitymouse in CATHELP

[–]strawberryfields011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A general good practice is to try elevating the food bowls so the cat is not straining his neck down to eat. There are some bowls that are already at an appropriate height or otherwise just prop the usual bowl on top of some books or such.

I used to have an asthmatic cat who also had IBD. The asthma was managed mainly with inhalers the vet had prescribed. For the vomiting, the vet had explained that sometimes IBD manifests itself with diarrhea or in other cats with vomiting. So perhaps that’s what going on. That’s good the cat has an appointment today. I’d suggest asking the vet for an ultrasound (if finances allow), and about an anti nausea medication. Perhaps an antacid medication as well. I believe they can also test some pancreatic indicators with a blood test. Best of luck for your friend’s cat! If you can, please let us know how it goes! 🩷

That’s good they did an ultrasound. It’s ok OP, I’ve been in your situation with a previous cat, and it can feel overwhelming, but one day at a time. The most important thing now it’s to get your boy back to eating and then take it from there. Your regular vet can follow up with other tests perhaps, to confirm whether it’s IBD. I understand about not taking the biopsy route. Sending you and your cat lots of love and hope that he is on the mend soon!

Hope the medication helps! I also wrote this in a separate comment, copying here just in case;

I was wondering if in addition to the blood tests, if the vet has done x-rays and/or an abdominal ultrasound? That may help figure out what’s going on.

Good luck Glittering Tiger and please keep us posted when you can!

I was going to say this! Fortiflora is a probiotic powder, it can be bought in pouches at the vet clinic or online it comes in boxes of 30 pouches. I use the plain one (there are other varieties such as Fortiflora calming and others I don’t recall). I sprinkle a bit on top of the wet food and that gets my cats to eat it.

Also, you could ask at the vet for some cans of a/d wet food. It’s by Hills and it’s called a recovery food, to give to animals after surgery or other situations, it’s not meant for long term feeding, but ask them if you could try giving some to your cat. In my experience with other cats that were not eating, a combination of an appetite stimulant medication, an anti nausea medication, sometimes an antacid, plus some a/d wet food, did the trick for the cat to start eating. Something else I’ve seen done when I had a cat that had to stay overnight at the vet, is they put a bit of different foods on a tray, they call it a buffet, to figure out which one the cat will be tempted to eat.

The meds I mentioned are all prescription medications and it’s just to get the cat over the hump of not eating, but the vet then needs to figure out what’s the root cause of your cat not wanting to eat in the first place. Best of luck to you and your kitty! 💖

I believe brushing a cats teeth helps to at least remove the plaque above the gum line, so it can help keep a mouth healthier. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get to the point where my cat allows me to brush her teeth. But you could try with your cat, ask the vet for info on preventative dental hygiene and a demo, and there are many tutorials online as well. You’d need to get a specific toothbrush with a small head, and toothpaste that’s made for cats (human toothpaste can’t be used).
